I came here because I had seen one of there dentists when they had a private practice. The VA was paying for my care while I was in school and I think all they saw was $$$ because suddenly instead of the one thing I needed, suddenly I needed three additional crowns. I mistakenly trusted this doctor and went along with it. Later when they tried this again, I went for another opinion because I thought something was off and I was absolutely right. This was many years ago and I have yet to need the work that they quoted me thousands of dollar on for this tooth. Now I am back with the VA and they aren't taking in patients and wanted to send me out for community care and listed off First Choice Dental and I told them my story. I said I don't want to waste the governments money or have unnecessary dental work so that FCD and the doctors can pocket more money on things that are not medically necessary. Yelp wasn't around back when this happened. I decided I would just look these guys up to see if maybe I was blowing this up... I also talked to my coworkers and they also had similar stories about First Choice, so I am leaving this review. I would not recommend their clinic from my experience and I won't even go there even if I don't have to pay out of pocket for their services. This was a great practice until I was told without notice "you can only schedule same day appts because of too many cancellations." I got sick. Couldn't show up w symptoms, right? Anyway a warning would have been nice--then it wouldn't feel like revenge or meanness. Charge a reasonable fee--a better solution. "Caring" necessitates a solution that doesn't embarrass, demean or belittle a person--no matter right/wrong of offense. I'm sorry--sorry you didn't know that, sorry for the cancellations. read more

I just had a dental exam by my wonderful (HONEST) longtime dental office workers at Total Care today and still after all this time has gone by ABSOLUTELY NONE of the procedures sharkus tried coerce me into enduring are needed. He stole quite a bit of money from me that I could have used to get much needed personal items and little gifts for my grandkids but lining his pockets took prededence and I sure hope he's enjoying his ill-gotten-gain. After reading the many other similar reviews on YELP written by others who either were duped into spending money they most likely could not afford to or else figuring out that they were being caught in a snare of outright lies I can sure see why they hired that slick shady spin doctor to acknowledge the complaints by eagerly giving thanks for feedback, fake apologies, and cleverly wording deflections to turn the situations around on the victims to make them feel that they were in the wrong...DISGUSTING and one day sharkus and his band of sharks will get busted in a class action lawsuit that will hit the front page! Really odd, and unprofessional place. I've been here several times and lately since COVID it really seems like the workers do not care at all about you or your end result. Some of them are very condescending and flat out rude. I've also gotten some pretty crappy work done, even the head Dentist noticed that... Also, they have all this literature on the perks of going to first choice. I've never been asked if I wanted to utilize any of these perks ever. I contemplated writing a review from my one visit to this dentist years ago but I never did. I have been fortunate enough to have had excellent dental care my whole life. When I moved, I wanted to find a dentist closer to my home. I tried First Choice Dental on S. Park. I had no cavities and no other issues at this visit but the dentist recommended that I have all of my fillings replaced. I let him know that no one has ever made that recommendation before. He told me that dentists often don't make the recommendation. I let him know that I have never had any problems with my fillings and I saw no need to remove them to put new ones in. There were no new cavities and the fillings are intact. There are no cracks in my teeth. There literally was no reason to make such a recommendation. I think they made the recommendation for financial reasons. For my next visit, I chose another dentist. She did not recommend this procedure. When she retired and I got my next dentist, again, she did not recommend replacing all of my fillings. The reason I am writing this now is that my mom was telling me her neighbor was told he should get all of his fillings replaced. I asked where he was going and, sure enough, it is First Choice Dental but a different location. My mom recommended that he get a second opinion. I told her that is exactly the same advice they gave to me and, yes, he should definitely get a second opinion. Here I am writing this review years later and still haven't had one issue with a filling. And if I do, I will worry about that one filling then. The cleaning was fine but if you get told to replace all of your fillings and there is nothing wrong with them, run and don't ever go back. read more

Yes! This dentist is overall great the staff are always super nice. But there is one issue. This one specific male doctor is a bit to rough on patients and is overall a bit impatient. Yesterday at my appointment, he was a bit to rough on my mouth. Due to my autism, I am not very fond of the dentist so I need more help and more medication to help keep my calm. due to me having a nitrogen mask over my nose, I was calm, but when the doctor was doing my mouth, he kept pulling on my lip to hard and was shoving the mask into my forehead, giving me a headache. I was in that room for over 3 hours, when I could've been out in only half an hour. Right after the appointment when I got home, I noticed how swollen my gums were. Which in my opinion, wasn't really normal. But it's when I woke up in the middle of the night to notice how SEVERELY swollen they were, they even had ulcers. I've never had this problem before so this is a bit concerning read more

Your office had the original referral request by email and the Dr.'s name. How hard is it to send the findings back to the email address that the referral came from? The dentists here do really great work and they really know what they're doing. I have been going here for over a year and a half and had no issues with any procedures that I've ever had here. The reason I am only giving them 4 stars is because you really have to know the ins and outs of your insurance plan before coming here. While you are in the chair, they will ask you if you want various preventative treatments and they really sell the benefits. Your insurance may or may not cover these procedures, so it's really easy to get blindsided by a large bill if you say yes to everything. If you're just looking for a standard cleaning, this is a great place to go, but remember to say no to all of the extras, or at least ask about the co-pay. read more

The staff here were very nice and friendly. Unfortunately they diagnosed me with 6 cavities - totalling about $1500 in treatment costs. They also suggested I go under gum replacement surgery. I went to have a second opinion to discover I did not have a single cavity. To add to that, I was told I do not need to pursue any sort of surgical procedure at this time. I've rated this dentist before, on Google. Here's my experience - every time I go here, I want to tell the world. I want to repay this office for their kindness, technical skill, and business know-how. A few months ago, I had Dr. Lee give me a root canal. I went to multiple dentists after that trying to find a better deal than at First Choice - every single doctor, without exception, said "wow" that is a perfect root canal. That was impressive so I went to First Choice. So I came back today, I joked with the staff a little. I talked to the new hire and when a senior staff member came to critique her work, I listened and added "great job" - I have full confidence in the new hire. Dr. Fick told me a cool story and when I asked to speak to him, he listened to my problem - I mean really listened. Business manager and staff could use better training in diverse customer service skills. Madison population is changing rapidly and so are your customers. I had an over all unacceptable experience. Informing patients on the outcome of treatment and procedures would have been much appreciate. I did not received instructions before or after having my procedure. A week later I was still swollen and in pain. After speaking to my Hygienist, I was told I could have called for instruction. I should have received this information during the visit, before the procedure. After the procedure I was rushed out the chair and headed straight to the front desk to make payment. I seen that payment was accepted online and thought I was allowed to do such. Had no idea tool was not utilized at this clinic. As I was told they could take my payment now. So, I gave the medical administrator my c.c for payment. Overall experience with the Park st. Location was not a good experience at all. It's Covid pandemic numbers are increase I understand . However, how is it that manager allowed staff to walk in without cleaning his hands with the sanitary Purell but I was commanded to clean mine. First impression was my last. I have always been pleased with the caring, friendly, and professional staff at First Choice on Park Street, from the receptionists and hygienists, to the dentists. What prompted me to write this review today is that I received a reminder call from an actual, real-live human today. Why is that important? Well, I had a conflict, and I was able to reschedule my appointment on the spot. I HATE automated reminder calls, and often they come after close of business, so I have to write myself a note so I don't forget, then make a call to reschedule. Please, clinic managers, think of your patients. Here's another example of their patient-focused care. . . I, like Wendy, have no idea why the rating is so low. I've always had great experiences here and the technology is excellent. They charge a little more but this is because their equipment is actually modern. My old dentist used those hard brushes, this place uses water pressure. My old dentist used silver fillings with mercury, these guys use white porcelain. Staff is always nice and welcoming and they even have coffee in the waiting room. They have a parking lot and actually call you to get you in earlier if that is what you're trying to do. First choice is great and I'm sad to leave when I move! read more

My normal dentist office is the office in Fitchburg. During a recent visit i was told that i had a cracked filling that obviously needed to be replaced. The dentist stated that due to decay under the filling a crown may be needed, but they wouldn't know for sure until the filing had been removed. An appointment was scheduled for later in the week at the S. Park office. They took another X-ray and determined that i needed no only a crown but a root canal as well. All this on a tooth that hasn't been causing me a bit of pain and has no sensitivity. That in 6 months a normal filling, became cracked and now a tooth needs a root canal and a crown seemed a bit odd. So I contacted another dental office in fitchburg for a 2nd opinion. I had an appointment scheduled within two days and my *NEW* dentist laughed at the thought of needing a crown. and said a replacement filling would be enough. So save yourself unnecessary work and avoid this dental chain. I will admit that the office staff and hygienists were all very nice and friendly. As a diabetic, I have to go to the dentist every 6 months. When I had to leave my pediatric dentist, I went to the office closest to my house. It seemed like EVERY TIME I went, there was a cavity or SOMETHING wrong which ended up in me having to pay a week's worth of wages. I can handle having a cavity here and there, but after every single time I went there was "something wrong", I got suspicious. The worst dental office I've ever had the displeasure of going to. It took them 6 different visits over the course of 2 months just to get 2 fillings done, each time needing to go back because they did sub-par work. Later I needed to get a wisdom tooth removed, they sent me to a separate first choice dental office to see their "Specialist" for an evaluation, only to be referred to their Oral Surgeon who again needed me to have a separate evaluation basically making my first evaluation a huge waste of time and money. Which is really the story of their entire business, a huge waste of money. They overcharge for appointments and I don't just mean their higher then anywhere else prices. They actually charged me $75 more then they were supposed to leading them to have to credit me for the next appointment. Avoid this dentist group like the plague, they charge more then anywhere else and will give you the WORST possible experience that they can manage, and it seems they are experts in that field unfortunately read more

The dental professionals are friendly enough and their locations are convenient. However, their hours are very inconvenient and they make no effort to accommodate customers with busy schedules. They don't have any weekend or evening appointments. I also had frequent problems with the office cancelling scheduled appointments when staff didn't show up. They didn't apologize for cancelling the appointment and rudely presumed I was available "whenever" to reschedule. I'm a graduate student with no dental insurance, who had the unfortunate experience of having a (grain of rice sized) chunk of her tooth fall off. The good news is that there was no pain; the bad involved my experience at First Choice Dental on South Park Street. I am only giving a rating of two stars because the receptionists were extremely polite and kind. I spoke to one of them on the phone for at least 5 minutes as we tried to arrange a time for me to come in. After my interactions with them the politeness stopped and the bullying began. The dental assistant was more interested in fixing her computer monitor that was crapping out than the patient. She crammed the X-Ray machine in my mouth and basically told me to tough it out while she fiddled with another computer for at least 2 minutes. (which is a really long time when some huge machine is chafing your effing mouth) The dentist explained to me that I would need an expensive crown for about $1600. He tried rationalizing it to me that it was "mere pennies a day" as this crown was going to last me 20 years. Additionally, the dentist (thinking that I was one of those uninsured eccentric millionaires) suggested that I get 4 of my other fillings replaced too as they were cracking. Both of these people seemed to not hear me say at least 4 times, "I'm not insured." I requested a temporary filling for the problem tooth no less than 3 times in which the dentist flat out refused. At the end, I was ushered into a room where they discussed finances with me, and suggested that perhaps I ask my parents for help in order to get a crown or maybe I could take out a loan from a bank that they endorsed. I hope it was that they just hate poor people, and they treat insured people better. (who probably have no choice but First Choice) read more

First Choice is an incredibly dishonest and incompetent organization. I've been dealing with them not knowing how to submit an insurance claim for the past three months. After about a dozen phone calls, where I had to reiterate my insurance information to one incompetent employee after another, they finally figured out how to submit a claim, and received payment from Delta Dental for $343.00. This was in November. Now, just last week (early February) I received a bill for $343.00, which was supposedly 60 days past due. They are trying to gouge me for double payment. Getting any medical procedure done can be scary, because as a consumer it's hard to know what's really wrong and what's necessary. So when I went to them initally, I believed them when they said that some of my metal fillings were deteriorated and I needed to have them replaced with this new fancy composite filling. (Also more out of pocket even after insurance.) Never mind that I was under 25 years old and my fillings couldn't have been more than 5 years old at that point. So I go ahead and get that done on three fillings, and when I come back for a 6mo checkup I tell them that my fillings are still hurting me, and that I can't bite with any pressure on them. They told me totally matter-of-factly that the new fillings didn't go well and that they'd have to do THOSE over. You have to be kidding me, this for fillings that weren't even bothering me before? I actually almost started crying, because fillings for cavities that I caused out of bad brushing is one thing, but being put through more drilling because my dentist screwed up!? Not fun. The dentist just turned to me and said "well you don't have any choice." Nice bedside manner, jerk. For a couple years after that I was suspicious of composite fillings, but my new dentist uses them, and I totally think they messed my mouth up at Park St. First Choice. read more

The appointments are easy to make, the reminders are helpful and they are on time. Janette is my hygienist and she keeps me healthy. Lots of information and conservative treatment options, placing structure before cosmetics. I appreciate that. The staff is friendly as are the dentists. I trust them and will be returning. My daughter and I both recently had our wisdom teeth removed at First Choice on Park St. We had an awesome experience. We received great care and had no issues following our procedures. The staff is friendly and worked with our insurance company to get us a quote in a timely manner. The day of the procedure they put us at ease and made sure we had everything we needed. Frauduent. They told me I needed 5 fillings with an out of pocket cost of $3000. Went to a different dentist and was told I did not need any fillings and if I had the cost would be $50. When I moved to Madison I decided to try first choice dental for my dental care. I really liked the general dentist I saw there and was very pleased with the staff I encountered so much so that I recommend it to my friends and coworkers. However, during my second visit there for just a routine cleaning, my general dentist told me my gums looked a bit thin and he wanted to refer me to their Periodontist to have it assessed. When I went in to see him I was very displeased with his manners and the way he spoke to me. I am a 25 year old registered nurse and he spoke to me as if I was a 5 year old child. Then he proceeded to tell me that I need gum tissue transplants (3 separate sites) and frenectomy. He said it needed it to be done urgently and I could get scheduled for part of the procedure next week. I had never heard of these procedures and I was a little scared because he made it sound so urgent. I decided to go back to my home town dentist to get his opinion who did not think it was needed at least not right this moment. He referred me to another periodontist in the Madison Area. When I saw her she said that my tissue might be thinning a little and that the procedure first choice dental said I needed urgently might not actually be needed for a few years from now. I spoke with 2 more dentists from my home town who both agreed that I did not need any of the procedures I was told I needed and they were shocked at First Choice Dental saying I needed them at all and immediately. They said it would have been an unnecessary procedure and that first choice is referred to "last choice dental" by the local dental associates. I am never going back again. read more

Do not go to First Choice Dental on Park Street!!! After a routine cleaning, I was told all of my fillings would need to be replaced because of normal break down. This totaled to about $3,000 with the help of my insurance. I declined to set up any appointment to start the process, because my fiancé went there earlier in the week and was told the exact same thing! My fiancé and I moved and therefore went to a new dentist six months later. Guess what our new dentist told us? Dr. Santos, in her description of what work needed to be done on my 13-year-old son's mouth, said in his presence that somewhere down the line we could add material to some of his front teeth to make him look "more manly" and that that was something people frequently did. I understand that people make cosmetic choices about their teeth, but wholeheartedly did not appreciate her making this comment in front of him. Adolescents have enough of a challenge feeling okay about themselves without people saying that they need to change their bodies to have an acceptable appearance or to fulfill gender stereotypes. The rest of her discussion with us was fine, but I just can't get behind bringing my son to an orthodontist who displayed this lack of care and sensitivity. We're talking about a multi-year, many-thousand-dollar relationship, and I want to feel like the person caring for him will be encouraging and compassionate, not make him feel like he's not good enough. My friend recommended the first choice dental to me. I went to the FCD office on Regent street. The guy Sharkus told me I had lots of problem he wants to address . It was shocking to me, because I brush and floss at least 3 times a day. He gave me a "budget treatment plan" that basically offered to extract several teeth (that were root-canal treated, and perfectly filled several years ago), and to replace with dentures (total over 10k). All I asked for was to get two fillings on my molars, and put a crown on a tooth that cracked a week ago. I went to get the second opinion, and was told: 1. Bridges were not only unnecessary, but totally insane idea, because it would affect some of my front teeth that btw were perfectly fine (no crowns required). Implants are generally recommended for front area replacement of a single tooth - more costly, but doesn't mess with healthy neighboring teeth. 2. My teeth were just fine in general, and except for three minor cavities, the cracked tooth, and general (not deep!!!) cleaning - there was nothing to address. The total cost for me ended up (with a crown I originally asked) 958$ (including the crown), because I had insurance that covers a half of the cost. Oh, and that's another thing - insurance! I had two (preventive (that doesn't cover restoration, and secondary - covers 50% restorative and endodontics). They priced simple fillings as "crown build-ups" (and it is considered restoration procedure), although I specifically said - no crowns on any teeth other then the one that cracked. And they forgot to mention that they do not work with my secondary insurance, that in this case covers only 25% of the cost. The blame is on me for that of course - I chose their office based on the primary insurance, not realizing that the secondary might be different, but they knew about it from the very beginning I gave them both cards, just didn't say anything. Forgot? The bottom line - if you go there, don't let him do comprehensive exam (because he will find a lot of stuff he wants to address). Be specific with want you want, and make it clear. Double check your insurance, and make sure you understand what procedures they plan to charge for - filing doesn't cost 300$. There are more dentists in Madison then coffee shops.
