    New pork and slaw sandwich
    Tara G.

Tried a new sandwich today. The pork and coleslaw! Delicious. I hope it stay in the menu as an option. The employees are always friendly and this particular firehouse is always clean !

    Now open, and it's yummy!

Should philanthropic activities affect a review? If you think yes, as do I, then this is a five star review. Seeing that check for $2,273,672 written to "Texas Public Safety Organizations" was impressive. From https://www.firehousesubs.com/public-safety-foundation/ , "At Firehouse Subs, subs are only part of our story. A portion of your purchase in 2018 at all US Firehouse Subs locations goes to the Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation, to be used to provide lifesaving equipment to first responders." Donate the change. As I finished paying, I was asked if I wanted to "Round up and donate the change?" I actually felt good about leaving the change behind at Firehouse Subs. Typically the counter top tip jars annoy me, but this round up concept did not. Also worth noting is that I did not see a tip jar. So onto the food. I received some coupons in the mail. The idea of a "hot sub" did not really appeal to me, but hey, I've got a coupon. On a first visit I typically go four stars at most, and that would hold for the single Italian sub (Genoa salami, pepperoni, Virginia honey ham, melted provolone, Italian dressing, and seasonings, served Fully Involved. Fully Involved® - Loaded complete with mayo, deli mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, and a kosher dill pickle on the side.) I dined on yesterday. It was a good sub, and much to my surprise, I liked my hot, via a steamer, sub. And, I have since learned "All of our hot subs are also available served cold. Just ask!" Staff here was very friendly and helpful. With another sub shop in the same strip, it's going to be hard to walk past the "Chili Pepper Relish" at JM's. Though Firehouse does have an impressive collection of hot sauces (see photo), nothing compares to JM's CPR. And, although I tried several, the hot sauce on my Italian sub didn't really work for me, but... Bottom line: When things cool off, I'm looking forward to giving Firehouse's chili a try. Now there's a use for all that hot sauce.

    Salad

I love the salads at Firehouse. They are filling and fresh. There are three options but I always get the sliced turkey meat with mine. It comes with mozzarellas, tomato, cucumber, and bell peppers. These are all finely diced and put on top. The lettuce is romaine and thankfully no iceberg. There are two vinaigrette options for salad the balsamic and Italian. There are other options but I always opt for vinaigrette. I'm happy there are no crackers or bread served so I'm not tempted. The service here is fast and accurate. The staff greets you upon entry too. Great healthy lunch option.

I ordered the firehouse "hero" sub, and my husband ordered the spicy chicken Cajun sandwich.

We went on a Saturday around noon and were shocked it wasn't packed, because the food here is phenomenal. The experience started strong right away. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the owner, who was incredibly friendly. He asked if it was our first time, and when we said yes, he brought us samples of their birria beef. It was unbelievably tender and seasoned perfectly. After some great conversation, we ordered, grabbed our number, and sat down. We ordered four dishes for five people, the loaded birria nachos, birria tacos, quesabirria, and the birria mac and cheese. Every single item was fresh, flavorful, and filling. We were all full by the end. The meat was fall-apart tender, the consommé was outstanding, and the salsa had just the right amount of heat without overpowering anything. The mac and cheese was rich, cheesy, and cooked perfectly. The restaurant itself was spotless and clearly well cared for. This is a family-run business, and that shows in the best way. During our meal, the owner even came by with his grandbaby, and the whole place just had that warm, family vibe that makes you want to come back. Yes, it's a little more than you might expect to pay, but it is absolutely worth it. The portions are generous and the quality is top-tier, so you leave satisfied in every way. If you haven't been to Avila Taco yet, stop waiting. Do yourself a favor and go immediately.

Not the Zaxbys experience I've ever received, in fact. To start, no greeting whatsoever when you enter. That was ALWAYS a Zaxbys thing, to say hello at least. I ended up standing there at the counter for almost a minute with the cooks staring at me before anyone came to the register to take my order. I could tell drive thru has priority now because that is where all the employees were standing. My food was good, just the tenders seemed small! I ordered extra sauce and it was in the bag thankfully. But there's only one trash station in the whole dining area, none outside either. So if you're in need of throwing away your trash, it's on the drive thru door side. Lastly, the cashier taking orders wasn't giving customers their drinks. He was waiting until they received their food, but I politely asked if I could go ahead and get my drink cups since my kiddos had been looking forward to a sweet drink. I noticed quite a few upset customers who were standing around trying to get their drink cups while the cashier was at the drive thru window. Disappointing because I used to love zaxbys, but this location doesn't have the same staff as previous visits. Customer service kept me coming back and paying $10 for a Big Zak Snak, but I'm not so sure about it anymore. Raising Cane's will probably be my go-to since it is closer and has better customer service, even though I'd prefer Zaxbys sauces.

Similar to a diner, you won't be disappointed and you won't be dazzled either. It was served quickly and priced fairly. No complaints here. As for the employees, I love the old guy. He can be edgy, but it doesn't bother me. I could see where some people may not get his humor, but I'd prefer someone with character over bland or dismissive any day.
