I've wanted to try this restaurant for years, but only made it now. I love corned beef / smoked meat, but I don't eat it that often. Generally I don't or try not to eat processed food that often, which of course smoked meat is. Too bad coz I get the craving for it more often than I eat it!! There are 2 Markie's I Ottawa; the other is on Carling. This location is in a plaza with a TD bank, Shoppers Drug, a Freshii, and Willy's, among other businesses. Markie's gets a lot of take out business, but they do offer a few tables for eat-in, like your usual fast food setup. You go to the counter and choose your options (ie: no waiter service). We each ordered a large #1, smoked meat on rye, which comes with fresh fries and a canned drink, and a side of coleslaw with a pickle spear, the slaw was very good! It's a diner experience, not 5-star cordon bleu, and the food hit the spot. My 2cents: I like a denser rye bread. This bread was finally big enough to hold so much meat, but it was so soft that it fell apart as I was eating the sandwich. It's no Schwartz' but that's a mighty high standard! And this is closer than Montreal. I would go back.

You get to choose your bread (and I believe there is no extra charge for gluten-free bread), cheese, up to 3 meats, unlimited vegetables and unlimited sauces. I got the hoagie, which was like a soft submarine bread, with Havarti cheese, chicken, turkey and ham, lettuce, tomatoes, green peppers, black olives, pickles, cucumbers, hot eggplant, roasted red peppers, sun-dried tomatoes and arugula. No sauce (I prefer a drier sandwich, lol). The man who made my bread was super nice. And they have very good sanitation practices. Food preparers wear gloves. The man prepped my bread, meats and cheese, and then put it in the toaster, since I asked to have it toasted. Then he cashed out the lady ahead of me. Then I saw him change his gloves before he came back and finished preparing my sandwich. I wished all restaurants followed these practices. Bravo! The sandwich was cut in half, and I ate half and brought the rest home to my husband, who also thoroughly enjoyed it. My only complaint, and it's totally on me for choosing the toppings, but it was a bit too salty with the black olives, pickles, eggplant AND sun-dried tomatoes. I might just go with the eggplant and skip the other 3 next time. Ingredients tasted fresh. The sandwich was much tastier than at those fast food chains. It's a takeout only joint, located in a strip mall. Lots of free parking in the strip mall.

This sandwich is literally the reason I downloaded this app…read more I've just spent the whole winter in Quebec and am now hitchhiking across Canada and decided to stay in Ottawa a few days. I booked 4 nights at the Saintlo jail hostel and when I came downstairs after a rejuvenating nap I saw that they had a list of recommendations sitting amongst a pile of other plastic sheets. Dirienzo's - the best ITALIAN SANDWICH in the city. I'm not really an Italian sandwich sort of person normally, maybe it was contributed by the burgeoning like for cured meats that I was acquiring after eating dried salami as my only source of food for the past week or so -- but who's going to pass up the chance to try the BEST of anything? I got there after taking 2 buses and was starting to become a bit concerned. I had $40 in my account and was hitchhiking across the country -- after all it was labelled the BEST in the city and that would normally come with a hefty price tag. When I first opened the door I instantly got greeted by the guy behind the counter, which made me feel welcomed and at ease. I looked up to view the selection of sandwiches that they had on offer and potentially the cheaper ones. I was surprised to see the sign that said $10 for ANY SANDWICH!! #booyah I was finding it hard to decide on which of the sandwiches to get since they all looked so appetising, but decided on number 16. The sandwich was massive for the price that it was. The bread was a perfect mix between durable so that it wouldn't fall apart in your hands, but soft enough that it was enjoyable, with the amount of bread contemplating he rest of the fillings just the right amount. I was pretty overwhelmed to be honest with how good it was. All of the ingredients including the lettuce (which I've found is usually the first thing places will skimp out on) were extremely fresh. I put in my coworker groupchat: "Anyone coming over across Canada after the season has to make a stop in Ottawa if they aren't already just to try one of these." Accompanied by a photo of my eyes watering with glee. My Nonna is always telling me how I need to learn Italian to be more connected to our culture and I've always just kindof brushed it off since I haven't needed to use it and we don't speak it much at home, but this has made me so proud to be Italian. As I continued to eat the sandwich sitting on a bench looking towards the city and the people playing basketball in the park, I found myself contemplating staying in Canada and raising my kids here in Ottawa so that they get to experience it themselves on a warm summer afternoon after picking them up from school. TL;DR/The Short Version: Cute little place in Stittsville…read moreselling tasty soups and sandwiches. The Long Version: I had lunch at Wiches Cauldron recently and it was great. I got the Chicken Sandwich ($15.95). It was sliced real chicken breast meat, mozzarella cheese, mixed greens, cucumbers, picked onions and fig jam. It usually comes with mayo, but I asked them to omit it. All sandwiches come with a mini 4 oz soup. I chose the curried carrot and squash soup. The sandwich was delicious. The bread they use is a Kaiser and it's from Carp Bakery. It was soft and very fresh. I loved that the meat was real chicken and not deli meat. The fig jam was tasty and gave the sandwich a nice sweet taste. The soup was a bit watery, but was full of flavour. It had a strong curry flavour and the coconut milk in it made it a bit creamy. I enjoyed it. Funny story: I ordered the chicken sandwich. They ask your name for the order. The lady who ordered after me also got the chicken sandwich but she asked for no cheese. The cashier announced to the kitchen "no cheese on the chicken sandwich" and the kitchen asked "which order? Jennifer's?" And the cashier said "no, the next one, I haven't punched it in yet." Lol. I chimed in "I love cheese, I definitely want cheese on my sandwich!" The man in the kitchen said "alright, extra cheese for Jennifer!" And the lady after me said "yeah, you can have my cheese." Haha. So I got two slices of cheese in my sandwich. Score! Lol. Everyone working there was super nice and friendly. It's a small place, so the cash and the kitchen are right next to each other. I took my order to go, but there's seating to dine in. I noticed they have a small amount of branded merchandise, like baseball caps. There is free parking in their private parking lot at the back of the restaurant. Fun facts: The Wiches Cauldron started off as a food truck in the early/mid 2010s. Some time in the early 2020s they moved into their present location which was Red Gables Creperie before (it was also briefly Red Gables Ramen before they rebranded and started selling crepes instead of ramen). The Long Version: District Deli opened up around March 2025 in the space that was Bismallah Pies (was Charlie's Groceteria before that). My husband and I dropped by to pick up a sandwich to share. The sandwiches are all named after nearby streets, which really gives it that neighbourhood feel. All meat sandwiches are $13.99 and vegetarian sandwiches are $12.49. You can also build your own for $13.99 where you can choose 2 meats, one cheese, and whatever vegetables you like. We went with the build your own option. We got roast beef and prosciutto cotto, fresh mozzarella and lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickled onions, pickled eggplants, and roasted red peppers, with a bit of honey mustard. The sandwich was really good. The bread was fresh, as were the other ingredients. It was a bit pricey in my opinion, but this is in comparison to other similar sandwich shops with $8-10 sandwiches (like 50 Two Sandwiches or Shorty's Sandwiches), but they are in industrial parts of town, so I get it, rent in Hintonburg is higher. District Deli only has cold sandwiches. No hot sandwiches, at least not at the time of the writing of this review. Service was courteous and efficient. Street parking only. Review #118 (2025)

Prepare to be amazed............... We had heard about his place for months and how awesome it was so we finally decided to try it out. When we got there at mid-day on a Saturday there was a line up out the door. My wife suggested we go for a walk to let the line thin out a but. We got back and the line had thinned out so we went in. They have a set number of sandwiches and you can also make your own, but we decided to try their set sandwiches. I got the Parkdale and the Holland, my wife got the Bayswater, and we picked up a Scott for my daughter. When we got home, we were nothing short of blown away. The quality of the sandwich was amazing - the bread was light and fluffy, a ton of meat, fresh veggies, great sauces, just incredible quality. More importantly, fantastic value for money. Even more importantly, the staff were wonderful - they chatted with us but kept the line moving - super professional and friendly. The quality of the sandwiches here rivals Old Tyme - no word of a lie. The bread they use is very very close to what we had in Lafayette and the quality of the fillings is outstanding. Don't walk, run to this place. It will change your life for what you think about sandwiches.

We got a small Goat in a Garden pizza, which was the #2 most liked as per UberEats. It was an 8x10 square, wood-fired, thin crust pizza. It had tomato sauce, fresh spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, mozzarella, and goat cheese. I found it to be light on the cheese, both with the mozzarella and the goat cheese. I'm a big cheese lover, so I was a bit disappointed, especially with the small chunks of goat cheese that I couldn't quite taste. There was plenty of chopped spinach on top, but I'd have to say the sun-dried tomatoes were the overpowering flavour. I didn't realize until after that I could've chosen pesto instead of tomato sauce as the base, which I think I would have liked better. The crust was crunchy and though thin crust, it definitely had more structure and you could easily pick up a slice and not have it flip over. We also got a small classic Detroit deep dish pizza, also 8x10 square, had "lots of pepperonis" and brick cheese, and was the #1 most liked. They use small pepperoni and wouldn't necessarily say "lots" but maybe a regular amount, at least what I'd want to get haha. This one was definitely cheesier and my husband even said it tasted almost like the whole thing was sort of covered in crispy cheese around it and gooey cheese on top - great Detroit-style pan pizza. The dough was soft and pillowy, and had just the right amount of sour tang in a pizza dough that I enjoy. I'm not normally a thick crust pizza girl, but I enjoyed this one more and can see why it's the most-liked. I know they gave the measurements, but I didn't clue in to how small it actually was for the price, especially the thin crust pizza that wasn't very filling. I'd love to try their other deep dish pizzas, especially for eat-in, as there are more choices than what's available online for delivery.
