Free beer upon check in! We get a koozie as well!
Brian F.

I had a really good experience here! I checked into the hostel after I landed in Austin and upon check in the front desk worker asked if I wanted a free beer. Like I'm going to say no! You can either stay in an all-gender room or a coed room. In the room that I stayed in there were storage spaces where you can lock your belongings. The most important part for me however, was that each bed had power outlets and USB outlets for me to charge my electronics. I was staying at another hostel in another city just before this and that was one of my biggest pain points so I'm glad this place thought that out. The beds also had some fans to help cool off during the heat. Also, this is a great place to stay if you like cocktails and bars because the Firehouse Lounge is in the same building (on the first floor) where visitors who stay at the Firehouse Lounge get a discount. The check in and check out processes were super easy and smooth. They also let you leave your stuff with them if you want to walk around after your check out time and don't want to carry your luggage around.

Love love love this place. I found a close spot to park and went inside to check in. Right away they handed me a beer and welcomed me warmly. I thought it was a nice touch that my name was up on the wall too. The room my friend and I had picked out was big, and we reserved the whole room for privacy. There was a bathroom right across the hall from us. The shower bathrooms could have used a little cleaning, but nothing crazy. The have nice little touches around the place The place is a little dated, but for the price you're paying, it's amazing. And they even have a "speakeasy" tucked away I'll definitely be coming back here when visiting Austin.

Speakeasy

This place is a gem! Stay at the penthouse. They give you a beer with a cool koozie at check in. The speakeasy is awesome. The service was awesome. The location is great. I will definitely be back.

I have to start with an apology to firehouse because this review is way overdue. The first time I visited this hostel, it was my first time to Austin / visiting 6th AND I had just turned 21. Amazing experience all around. The location is superb. The instructions were very clear and the common spaces were clean and well kept. Very warm and cute place to rest your head in the middle of the city, But also a great place if you want to enjoy some live music and tasty cocktails in the speakeasy below the hostel. The first time I went here, I met a traveling Brit in the kitchen area, 6 years later, we got married! I've visited a handful of times after and have always met some great people and had some amazing experiences. Thanks for introducing me to my husband, firehouse!

NO NO NO!!! I was misled, lied too and exploited as a traveller with my stay. They stole about 500USD from me. I was on what was described to me as an "emergency booking" which was because one of my staff booked the wrong days for SXSW, so when I got there they told me they had rooms suitable for these situations and I would be accommodated until I found suitable accommodation. Let me explain more about the stay though... I didn't complain about the poor state of the rooms and bathroom facilities, I relied on their hospitality to make up for it and it's failed. The unclean bathrooms, kitchen and odours in the dorms and most other areas was very poor, while they had a strict zero tolerance against bringing people back or having any type of social interaction with non-guests, it didn't matter, the sound from the streets below, homeless yelling, fights breaking out, or the very average and expensive nightclub downstairs (yes inside the Hostel), this part of town is not the greatest either, with police shutting down the street with sirens and loudspeakers like martial law for a zombie apocalypse (the zombies being the literal thousands of drunk people staggering home at all hours). Having to check out every day was a nightmare, and no way to enjoy a stay, I got threatened with "Check out fees" at $15 per 30 mins everytime I needed to pack up my things and move to a different bed, unfortunately it was just so impractical, I was paying full price, why should I move everyday? I was told this is the standard with the Hostel, and most guests do this?? I ended up moving to a place that was flexible, cheap and understanding while I waited for a friend to have me stay in Hyde Park. It's clear this is a poor outcome based purely out of the managers spite, arrogance, principle or maybe just to hit some incentivised monetary target for the owners, for a booking that would have otherwise been non-existent and reserved for emergencies. They cancelled my booking and gave no refund when I left, saying they had a no refund policy, even though that's what was promised. No doubt they were able to capitalise on the extra money I paid, plus renting the space to another guest. They have zero care for the guests, it's such a shame and I won't be going back. When I said how disappointed I was, they shifted the blame on me, they claimed they were accommodating, but as I said to them I would have called my friend and stayed on their couch until a room became available at a place that would have had a more comfortable and clean. I should have done this! I could see them writing some typical PR response to this saying how sorry they are and then refer to their "policy", but it's absolute lies. This place doesn't suit the partygoers or the conference attendees. DON'T stay here!

This place is great. I appreciated that checkin instructions were sent via email ahead of time; it made checking in so easy. Firehouse has a perfect central location, friendly staff, it's clean, safety-conscious, comfortable, has a cool interior design, is quiet, and has all the hostel amenities. The stairwell even has interesting art and suggestions of cool places to check out around Austin. And, the speakeasy lounge attached to the lobby is worth going to even if you're not staying in the hostel. I seriously loved this place!

My welcome!

An amazing hostel for a great price and location! I've stayed at a few hostels and this one is a winner! It's clean, the staff is helpful and it's attached right to a speakeasy bar which is always a plus! They also give you a free beer during check in which is the "national" beer of Austin (oh Texas lol). It's a great way to meet others and there are random activities throughout the weekend and weekdays for solo travelers. If you can afford the deluxe room I would highly recommend it because it's worth a few extra bucks. The checkin and checkout process is painless. The kitchen area is in the 2nd floor and they give free breakfast from 7-11. You're close to sixth street and most places are walkable. Highly recommend a stay here!

Had a wonderful time at the speakeasy bar behind the bookshelf. Jordan is a very accommodating bartender and sweet because he let me try angostura bitters for the first time ever. Love the Harvey Wallbanger drink he mixed. Thanks for the great customer service Jordan!

We went out in the town during the day and at night. The manager/owner of the property charged us a ridiculous amount of money because "we threw a football threw a shed." We did not even have a football and the "shed" in the back yard was falling apart as is. Then we were charged for a camera that had gone missing. 1) we never saw a camera and 2) why would you leave your camera at your house that you are renting? smart. Lastly, he charged us for a broken door which was broken when we arrived. We noticed it but didn't think anything of it thinking the owner already new about it since it was there apon arrival. I feel he took advantage of us just because we used the words bachelor party. We were there a total of probably 15 hours the entire long weekend and it was all just to sleep. If you do stay here take pictures of everything because he will nickel and dime you for everything. whether you did it or not. I would suggest staying somewhere else.

It is a great option for solo travelers from everywhere. There are only mixed dorm rooms (no single sex), so if you feel uncomfortable with that, then it may not be the best place. I had no issue with it besides the bathroom being a little messier (oh messy guys). Brent, the hostel owner, is awesome and a great host! He took a bunch of us out to some of the best local bars.

Obviously there is an issue with running a "youth hostel" out of a duplex which is only assigned 2 parking spots with a vulture towing company preying on clueless guests!! What a disaster, honestly. A $50/night stay ended up being a $250/night stay! And meeting someone at a coffee shop without first disclosing the location of the "hostel" has red flags written all over it. The address is actually 4800 Southway Drive, NOT 1008 Waller St, Austin, TX 78702. Connor greets you at a coffee shop on South 1st and escorts you over to the shady apartment complex! He essentially runs a business out of a rented apartment. A week after he realized I wrote this review he kept harassing my boy friend to tell me to take it down. If you are a young attractive female, watch out, he gives creepo vibes for sure. He can be very controlling and overbearing when it comes to socializing making things very uncomfortable. There were several occasions when he was very judgmental and disrespectful to other guest. Because he runs this hostel out of his home it seems like he expects the whole world to revolve around him. Very unprofessional and rude. There was a situation were the toilet backed up and I asked him if he had a plunger. He said no and that I was stressing him out and why did I back up the toilet? and what was wrong with me. Also, the last straw was when he told me I had to move out of the room I was already in and move into the mens dorm. I told him I was uncomfortable with that so he told me to move my stuff in the closet and wait in till something comes up. I told him I was tired and wanted to relax so I asked if I could hangout in one of the private rooms for a couple hours while I waited. He told me to quite back talking him and that I was being unreasonable and crazy. I figured this is time for me to get out. I packed up my stuff and left. I tried to get my refund back but he only gave me half. Please dont stay here if you want to lose your sanity. The guy is a crazy and delusional.

Fifteen, or so, minutes later, he rolls up in an 80's tan, striped, Dodge Ram van. Already, Austin was living up to expectation. I had no idea where we were headed, I just knew I was along for the ride as he conducted an informal meet-and-great driving along I-35. Having traveled some distance to Austin, it was great to have such a comfortable place to shower and crash. The follow morning, I awoke to an omelet and freshly brewed coffee. The following evening, everyone at the house piled into the Ram and Connor took us out for a night on the town, featuring donut burgers, blues music, two-step dancing, and half-priced Texas beer. Over the next two weeks, I enjoyed impromptu barbeques, bonfires, and living room concerts, and met a rotation of interesting people: a young man working his way across the States selling children's books door-to-door, a culinary queen from upstate Wisconsin, a friendly cab driver visiting from Long Island, a lighthearted deckhand on leave, a Dutch mother-daughter team enjoying a Texas-style holiday, and the British people... who charmed us all! The hostel is in a great location. There are coffee shops, co-ops and natural food markets, bookstores, bike shops, convinces stores, and local restaurants all within walking distance, and it's a short bus ride to get downtown. Best of all is the FREE, warm, spring-fed neighborhood pool nearby. Uber Sleeper Hostel & Breakfast is the epitome of what a hostel should be! If you are looking for a laid-back spot from which to discover Austin, share good meals and good times with open-minded people, and experience true Texas independence and hospitality, whether your stay is long, or short, then this alternative lodging community is the place to be. Thanks Connor, for creating good times and friendly communion, for all the creative encouragement and inspiration, and for a memorable stay!

The manager greeted me and walked me over to the other house where he had rooms. This is where it got scary there were men everywhere sitting on the couch in the kitchen and they looking really desperate for a woman. The first thing that raised annoyance was the extra $5 we were charged for pick up from downtown. Even on the website it says $5, when I spoke to Connor before we left for the trip we reiterated $5 but on the day before he told me $10. Not wanting to argue over $5 for the sake of peace in the new place we were staying we let this slide. The only description correct about this house is that it's located literally beside the highway, we expected to be surrounded by nature trails and places we could bike and hike. Upon introduction to the home Connor pointed out all the things near to us. Nothing really close unless you're happy to walk ab 20 minutes. Nature trails... forget it. It's at least a ten minute drive. We were aware of other guests arrival on the weekend and discovered all the other rooms had been booked out, we guess he hadn't saved a room for himself because he put us in the awkward position of asking if we wanted people in our private room. We did not. As it turned out his partner was visiting and we think there lack of space may have shifted his mood toward us as we were due to be the longest staying. The doors are all locked with a code, but this didn't stop our host from violating our privacy and on several occasions we noticed he had been in our room while we weren't there. We really just wanted some privacy so we could enjoy time together but we felt like we were annoying him in his own home so we'd leave for as long as we could without being exhausted. One day we did try to relax but the internet stopped working, only once he went to "run an errand" was it connecting again (bill troubles or just general lack of awareness and organisation?). The public spaces didn't feel shareable. The breakfast nook was covered in ants every single morning. We found cockroaches in our room on several occasions, the air conditioning duct is left exposed. The bedding isn't the best, we struggled to stay warm and covered by the blankets. We are smokers, we enjoyed sitting outside for longer periods of time and we did enjoy a few puffs with Conor but on the whole it just felt uncomfortable. I just feel if you're offering your private space in this manner to have somewhere for himself. On our last night my boyfriend went out into the living room to find him naked barely covered by a towel. He played music loudly at his own discretion yet barked at my boyfriend when he played music shaving in the bathroom. Granted it was late but I couldn't hear the music what awoke me was Connor yelling. It really felt like he didn't want people in his home, or like he did but only if you gave him tons of your time. We felt obligated to make lots of chat when we were exhausted and just wanted to be left alone. In the end we didn't even take him up on his offer of a ride to he airport. We couldn't bear it so we paid for an uber (although i suspect he would have tried to get us to pay him something had we not). All in all I wouldn't describe this place as a quaint bed and breakfast. I would describe it as a lonely mans eclectic cheaply furnished and decorated home located on a highway in Deep South austin. I wouldn't recommend this place for anyone looking to have any romantic getaways.
