The Smith-Klein Gallery caught both our eyes and we decided to go in and take a look around. The layout really works here, the walls are covered with photographs, paintings, and water colors. Mixed throughout are unique sculptures that make you think, if I move money around in my accounts could I take this home today? I give it a little thought, I admit to it. Some of the landscape paintings really caught our eye with the uses of vibrant colors and textures. The bonus for me was the jewelry offerings. I truly fell in love with some gorgeous metal twisty earrings that should have a place in my collection. One day I'll wear those and rock them like no other. I hear the works here change often so I can keep coming back to a completely new experience. The owner of the shop was easy to talk to and was eager to share her love of the some of the artists she was showing. It's a pleasure to have an owner so in love with what she does, it makes the experience much better.

I think that building was condemned. Core wandered among multiple locations including spaces on Larimer and Wazee Streets before landing in the Arts District on Santa Fe. Core shared the gallery space at 900 Santa Fe Drive with Spark Gallery for many years before leaving for lower rent in Lakewood around 2020/2021. Core first landed at Pasternack's Art Hub, then moved to The Hub at 40 West Arts in 2024 and now shares that space with the Lakewood Arts, Next, Edge, Kanon, and 40 West galleries plus the Anachronism art supply store. Core's membership has aged, like many of the other co-ops, and generally more mature work is being presented these days as opposed to the extreme avant-garde of Core's beginnings. Core currently has an extremely strong roster and I find most of their shows impressive. The Hub project has brought a real center to the sonewhat amorphous 40 West Arts District and Core is a key component of this critical mass. Denver's loss is Lakewood's gain and Lakewood has continued to capitalize on and encourage the arts community.

We went to a festival of the celebration of the end of summer, First Friday ArtWalks. I had seen a post in the Boulder paper announcing the event. One of the artists featured was a person we have known for over 25 years and seen his work in other settings, in Boulder. It was really nice to see the new work he has done recently, a shift in color palette and location settings but still recognizable by his style. And still depictions of the Southwest part of the country. The gallery had other artists also and craft and pieces of art for sale. A nice collection of styles. Niwot has always been known for its antique stores, even since we arrived in Boulder in the 70s. We did not furnish from these stores but some friends did. Now, many of the historic shops sell the art of the local community that has sprung up, in a rural setting, just minutes from Boulder. If you take the sign at the turn off from the Diagonal Highway (119) just east of the light at Niwot Rd, you will find yourself on the 2nd Ave historic section of town. It was also a treat that the festival evening had a large local band playing outside near the galleries on this block. A large crowd for the end of summer festivities, and awards to the artist favorites of the summer long shows. Many people seemed to all know each other. Small town, still in the heart of Boulder County.
