I have found Firearms Safety Group to be a excellent resource for pistol shooting instruction and, more recently for the Illinois Concealed Carry training.I had a fair amount of firearms training and experinces 30+ years ago when I worked as a Chicago Police officer during the decade of the 70s but had not done hardly any shooting since then up until a couple of years ago when a relative invited me to go shooting again. As I began to rekindle my interst in shooting as a hobby it occurred to me that I could benefit from some addtional professional training. I found this organization at while randomly seraching the internet and signed up for the NRA Basic Pistol class. Casey Fuller and two other instructors conducted the class which included people who ranged all across the board from almost from neophytes, to those with some but not a lot of skill/ experience and some with quite a bit. I was quite impressed with how they manged to taylor individual instuciton to suit the needs of each student. SAFETY training was paramount - being emphasized over and over again. All three instructors have many many years of experience as trainers in both the military and police work. Therefore when this group began to offer classes for the training required to apply for an Illinois Concealed Carry license I knew where to go. I was even more impressed with that class which I attended one week ago. The same three people provided the instruction with Mr. Fuller taking the lead and doing most of the classroom lecture as well as leading the class through repeated dry fire holster drills with the ever-present emphasis on safety. The other thing which impressed me greatly was the overall tone of Mr. Fuller's message which cautioned the students about the right and wrong reasons to legally carry a concealed handgun. From the very begining he pounded home the idea that the only valid reason for a private citizen to carry a concealed firearm in their day-to day activities (excluding hunting, travel to the range, etc.) was for the defense of self and others to prevent death or grave injury and, then only as a last resort. They taught that the use of non-lethal means such as pepper spray to meet a threat and avoid serious harm was to be preferred over deadly force if at all possible. The class also gave very thorough instruction on the new law with emphais on all of the areas where concealed carry of firearms by licensees is prohibited and the "parking lot exception" with respect to those phohibited areas. The Illinois laws regarding the use of deadly force for self defense were also covered thoroughly and accurately. I have no hesitation in recommending the classes offered by Mr. Fuller and his collegues and intend to seek addtional training from them myself in the furture. read more

I've been taking firearms training classes from Casey Fuller and Firearm Safety Group for about the past year - ever since it started to look like Illinois might actually pass a concealed carry law. I've taken FSG's Intro to Pistol, NRA Personal Protection in the Home, Defensive Pistol, Holster Skills, and more recently FSG's concealed carry holster skills course and one of their Illinois concealed carry firearm training courses. Although I've primarily worked with Mr. Fuller, I've had some exposure to a couple of his other instructors. They are all very professional, and have relevant and impressive backgrounds. While I've been around firearms most of my life, I'd never had any formal training. It was an off chance that just about a year ago I had an opportunity to take a "tactical" pistol training class with Mr. Fuller - it sounded like a fun. I quickly found that my perception of my skill level was more than slightly overblown. I knew that if I was going to be a responsible concealed carry permit holder, I needed a healthy amount of professional training. Mr. Fuller is hypercritical when it comes to safety - and that's what you want when you're training with firearms. The classes I've taken were all very serious, but I can say that I had plenty of fun. FSG's private, outdoor range is great for training. And, the instructor-student ratio kept the training personal. I have taken a couple of courses from another local training group, and those classes were useful and offered a different perspective. But, for my personal and family protection objectives, I will be spending the majority of my training time with Mr. Fuller and FSG. (Just as a side note - firearms skills are perishable. I recently completed my Illinois Concealed Carry class held by the Firearm Safety Group. When I enrolled in the class, I expected it to be mostly bureaucratic BS (it was set up by the State government, after all, right?) but I was pleasantly surprised that the content was quite worthwhile. Our instructor was Stan Evans, a combat veteran with an impressive background as a military and civilian firearms instructor. Stan was professional in his presentation and he didn't tolerate any sloppiness or inattention when it came to firearm safety. This instilled a new measure of safety awareness in me that I intend to pass on to my friends. A significant portion of the course was devoted to gun safety, proper gun handling and the need for proficiency. Stan's personal goal to help maintain his proficiency is to fire in excess of 10,000 rounds per year on the range helped drive home the need for regular practice. The course included a summary of the law and several discussions of when the use of a firearm is justified and when it is not. The most important ideal I came away with was the attitude adjustment and increased level of personal responsibility required for anyone who decides to carry a firearm. In addition, the course made it clear that using a firearm is the last resort in stopping an attack and there are many other options available. I hate to admit it, but when it comes to the 16 hours of class time required to obtain a concealed carry permit, the Illinois State Police got this one right. I recently took FSG's Phase II Illinois Concealed Carry course with Casey, I took his Utah Conceal Carry this past fall. I started the class expecting to brush up on my shooting skills and learn a few pointers about carrying a concealed weapon. Those things I did, but much more. A good half of the class is focused on mindset. I had no idea how many things there were to consider when choosing to carry a weapon. The classroom portion left me with a newfound awareness of the world around me as well as an improved perspective on how I may appear to those that would try to harm me or my family. Casey also helped point out beginning holster training. He is a very dynamic and down to earth instructor. I never once felt he was talking down to the class. If you are looking for a Quantico looking range and instructors spitting out the latest and greatest shooting tricks, this class is not for you. However, if you are seeking a professional, tried and true approach to self defense led by a dynamic yet personal instructor.....This is it. I will definitely be taking FSG's holster class in the spring. I am also looking forward to signing my family up for an in home defense class with Casey and his team. I had the pleasure of being introduced to Casey Fuller a number of years ago, when he taught a private Utah CC class for members of Quarry Ridge Hunt Club in Lena IL. Later I took the Utah/AZ CC class with my wife and followed that up with the IL. CC once it became available. As a Volunteer IL DNR Hunter Safety Education Instructor, I have to say that Casey and Stan taught a great class with a high level of emphasis on the real responsibility one takes on when deciding to arm themselves at home or in public. I left this class with quite a different attitude than when I went to the class. They gave me a great respect for furthering my skills as this is key in knowing when and when not to go to deadly force, and to at all costs, avoid allowing yourself to be in this position in the first place. There are so many skills and ways to avoid this and be prepared both physically and mentally to deal with issues and make the right decisions should you be forced to do so. Casey is one of the best firearms instructors I've taken classes with. This man has a level of professionalism, dedication, knowledge, and the ability to teach anyone the proper use of firearms. I was also very impressed with his tactical techniques, as well as his ability to relate items of importance to students in his class. using his own family as examples he lays out situations and discussess options and safety issues involved in each situation. i also must touch on my admiration of his probing question to each of us inquiring why we want to conceal carry... many answered for safety and security, and a few others were there mearly because it was their right.... Casey made sure that regardless of your reason for being there, you were aware of the weight of responsibility that carrying a weapon, concealed or otherwise, comes with! As a female and a soldier in the military, I highly recommend FSG for anyone who wants to learn proper use of a firearm. I also enjoyed his wit and humor, it kept the class moving. read more

Casey and Stan were great they made the classroom environment very comfortable, especially for beginners. very informative and willing to answer any and all questions...even to the point of doing some quick online research to clarify a very difficult scenario discussed in my class. HUGE emphasis on the importance continuing you and your family in firearm education, which i feel is very important all aspects of safety, law, care, etc were covered in detail along wiht a very complete and comprehensive take home packet which includes the ENTIRE conceal carry law "its pratically a book in itself!" fsg is a great firearm training organization. A few years ago I took my Utah and Florida classes, a pistol safety class and just this week the ill cc class. If I have taken one thing away from the classes is safety, safety, safety. The trainers are very knowledgeable, professional, and very patient. I continue to learn a lot each class I take, even though I grew up hunting and shooting. With lots of class options and locations fsg will be my only choice for all my firearm courses, the smaller class sizes are a huge plus for personal instruction. I took the Illinois Concealed Carry class this weekend with Stan Evans. The class was informative and answered all of the questions I had very clearly. The class was interesting and very well taught. Even with a diverse class, all of the instruction was relevant and appropriate. Stan did a great job of making sure everyone understood all of the material. After the class, I not only feel like I am much more informed, but it makes me want to continue learning about firearms and safety.
