Another fantastic find! Youngest recommended this place. So, Wifey, Youngest and I decided to check it out. The vibe here coming in is just so, well, how to describe it... "Cool"? It's just a wonderfully spacious place. Not the typical "shove in as many as we can". I was a huge fan of the bruschetta appetizer. The bread want nearly as hard as you usually get, and the Italian "pico" was quite flavorful. If you like nothing tastes and your taste buds live in mashed potatoes, don't bother. The Bianca pizza was really nice. Crust was the Italian style with the right texture, and crispness. My only complaint, the chairs are uncomfortable. Wifey's thoughts? She's busy today, so I will just tell ya, she loved everything and cannot wait to come back. So, I'm sorry this brief review isn't up to our regular standards, but we will be back and do a nicer job next time. Two words. Beer wall !! Well good pizza too but the beer wall is super fun. A great way to try some beers that you may have not wanted to commit to via a full glass. The service is a little slow. But the pizza is worth the wait !! Got the dough nuggets. We're a little denser than ones I have had at other pizza places but the warm sauce on the side was very good. My kiddo got a Detroit style pizza with pepperoni. And let me tell ya it had Pepperoni!! Like stacks of them. And that crispy edge is to die for. Husband and I got a thin crust BBQ and it was so crispy !! The addition of cilantro was a nice fresh pop of flavor. Got there at 730. Had reservations for 8 people ahead of time. We knew they'd be busy as 8th grade graduation happened and there's were going too. 745. Had to ask a waitress to get drink order. Went ahead and put in dinner order too. Couldn't get nachos and another appetizer as they were out of 1 ingredient. 820 and no food yet. Had to ask about the main course. We saw food sitting out at the ready station but staff was not getting it out. 830.. Ended up it was our pizzas. Pizza had skimpy toppings and was warm at best. They totally forgot a salad. Meatball sub was cold in the middle. No one came back to see if it was OK or if we needed more drinks. The manager said they were fully staffed in front and in back. I visited the Fire on Fifth a few weeks ago as me and my buddy were in the area hiking Starved Rock, Matthiessen, and Buffalo Rock State Parks. We arrived around 6:30pm on a Sunday night. Fire on Fifth is a sports bar vibe with lots of TVs. They also have arcade games, two pool tables, dart boards, video gambling, and it appears Live music on weekends + Touchtunes. They have a great selection of beer, but it's poor your own beers, exactly like Tapster/District Brewyards in Chicago. I hate the concept for consumers because it's a way for businesses to charge more without the labor cost, but it's a good business model them. One thing that I did notice is that they lacked glassware at the beer station so I ended up re-using my glass. I would recommend them changing to plastic cups so that is not a issue for consumers. Onto the food. We ordered dough bites and cheese curds as apps. Dough bites were good! They were hot and crispy. You can't go wrong with fried dough and they were like parmesan donut holes. Their marinara sauce is good with solid flavor. The cheese curds were also good too. Unfortunately the pizza was a little bit lacking. Crust was the worst part as it was alike eating cardboard. Picture slightly worse than Costco pizza. Cheese mid, not great. Sauce was tangy with good flavor and the best part. Basil had good flavor, but too dry. Slightly below average pizza. The wait staff was friendly, but they took forever as there were two for the entire place and they didn't really check in with us. I noticed an older couple walk-in and they waited a long time for someone to greet them. Overall, the pizza is not great, but the apps were solid. I had never heard of Fire on Fifth, but was intrigued it was nestled in the old Westclox factory that almost burned to the ground some 9 years ago. Let me stress, ALMOST. I figured if something like a restaurant existed inside we would be getting more than just food. First off, the ambience of this place is unlike anything I have walked into. It's open and airy. This place had great music playing but not so loud you couldn't talk to those near you. Our waitress, Mya is the type of server you dream of. She was very attentive, spot on with little details in our order and worked incredibly hard. You could tell she had tons o' personality but kept her focus on getting food out while it was piping hot for all tables, not just ours. Secondly, order the Taco Pizza. The crust itself was a bit thin in the middle, but the flavors and this place's approach to a taco pizza won me over. It had a refried bean base which really adds way more flavor to the game of your taco pizza. Although they didnt put as much cheese on as I had hoped, I embraced this was "their" take on a traditional pie in the Valley. I had to request onion on my taco pizza which was odd. Whatevs. No big deal. I would rate this taco pizza as the best Ive had in this area in the past twenty years. And yes, it gives Lou's LaGrotto a run for its money. I prefer Fire of Fifths, but I am hardly dogging Lou's. To each their own. My brother ordered the "Bread Line" to stave off hunger pangs until the food arrived. This little entree was great and simply. Bread. Oil. Parmesan+Pepper. Some dipping. Forget about it. You will love it. I was a big fan of Carter who I never met, the young many who made our gem of a pizza. Mya made this trip special and was one heckuva server! I personally have to give a nod to Andrew the bar keep who intrigued me to try the Key Lime Pie cider beer. He even came with a few other samplers that make me want to return about 43 more times. A lot of wings are not cooked enough but this place does it right. We also tried the Italian beef. It was good but I prefer this with au jus which was appeared not to come with it. Fire on Fifth exceeded my expectations! We were looking for a dinner spot to meet friends who were in town but staying with family. La Salle was a good mid-point. And pizza seemed like a safe bet, especially with two young kids. The restaurant is unassuming from the outside -- the basement of an old clock factory. The vibes are still quite industrial. The space is large with a mix of high top and low top tables. We were promptly seated. And put in appetizers. The fried dough balls with spicy marinara were a great starter. We ordered multiple pizzas, all of them were good! And thanks for the server for being willing to make some of signature pizzas vegetarian. The kids in our group were happy with their cheese pizzas and fries. The kids meal is a bargain too (a small pizza, fries, and a drink for $7). And there was a beer wall, which is always fun. I came here with my family Saturday afternoon. The building is absolutely beautiful. There is very high ceilings, it's very spacious and tons of tables and rooms. They even have a special room where you can play pool, shuffleboard, darts, there's a golf game and there's also another room that offers slot machines. We ordered the 5th street fries as an appetizer. They were $12 and delicious. The fries are hand cut with marinara, Alfredo sauce, pepperoni, sausage, banana peppers and they tasted great. We split the Big Ben pizza, which had Italian beef, sausage, cheese and giardinera. Everyone really liked that pizza a lot, it was delicious. I've been wanting to come here ever since it opened. We had amazing Takeout a couple weeks ago, so we wanted to try it fresh and hot. Place is huge inside. A little on the loud side but that's perfectly okay! Food and drinks were incredibly good. Left very full! The Illinois Valley has quite a few locations that have great pizza, but this place is the best. I've been hoping for a place like this to come here and I'm so very glad it's here! Cannot recommend this place enough. My family and I were traveling from St. Louis back to Milwaukee and wanted some pizza and a place for the kids to move around. This place hit all the marks and really went above and beyond. To start, it was a shift change just after we ordered from the bar. The transition was seamless and both bartenders were attentive to our needs. My husband and I got to hang at the bar while are kids played pop a shot and other games. We ordered 3 different pizzas and the meatballs. All of them were amazing in their own right and my husband loved the meatballs. My family especially enjoyed the Bianca. Unfortunately, there was a slight issue with that pizza, we brought it to the bartenders attention and within minutes the manager was over to apologize and make it right. He offered us another pizza to go, and we took him up on that knowing we still had a couple more hours on the road. They also removed the original pizza from the bill. Here's where they really went above and beyond--we mistakenly left our credit card there, my husband paid but didn't know that I gave my card to the bartender to hold. We didn't realize we left the card until 45 mins into our trip. I was able to contact the restaurant and again within minutes the owner called me back. He took my information, gave me his cell number and ensured he would drop it in the mail come Monday. We usually love this place, great food and decent service. In starting we wanted to pay for a beer sampling card, and were told we could not because they were out of cards, on a Saturday night. Unfortunately, our party of 4 were placed in a "cave" with another large group of families who had come from an athletic event. They were understandable loud, there were about 15 people in their party. They stayed for at least an hour after they paid their bill . There was a speaker directly over their table that was obviously too loud for an enclosed area I did not see the speaker until we were leaving, but it needs to be relocated or dealt with, too small of an area. Because the larger group had paid their bill , we were kind of forgotten back there. We really should have asked to have been moved , but we kept thinking the larger party had paid and would move soon. In the end we left before them. We all left with headaches. read more

Excellent service cannot overcome mediocre food, nor can poor service overcome good food. Fire on Fifth was the latter, a really poor experience. We came in early for lunch with our two children. The first challenge was access. We did not notice any information on how to go into the dining area with a stroller. On the very end of the entrance area was a small simple stairs elevator which we did not see. So we carried the stroller down the short flight of steps. Upon leaving, we were instructed of the small elevator. Not the best way to move needy adults or small children in need of help down stairs. Maybe I missed a better way, probably not. The atmosphere was a bit loud and could not communicate well across the table in a normal tone. Server was attentive, but a bit over eager when dealing with parents and young children. We are a bit slower. The effort was there, however. As for food, it was very good. The major disappointment came from an order. We were brought a salad entree. It was ordered and was explained correctly in the menu. My wife did not expect the salad to be in this manner. The server quickly summoned the manager - not sure if this was needed, but this was the immediate response. Instead of offering some simple solutions immediately, we were chastised because "don't you know what wedge salad is?" My wife explained that she could not cut this with a plastic knife. We were told this is all that we have. No simple solution, regret, or sorry for the situation. Finally, it was explained that we can take this and "cut this one for you, but this is not what we will do again." We felt so belittled by this that we immediately left with our food. The food was on mark - management surely is not. We wanted to have a good experience so bad...been looking forward to going to the Westclox building and enjoying some pizza for quite some time. The two times we have sat at the bar on two different occasions, we sat there, no body greeted us, no body said we will be right with you. We were not acknowledged. We placed our order at the bar because we sat at a high top table and were told they didn't have servers there. No problem. Placed an order of dough nuggets as an appetizer and a pizza for the main course. The pizza came first and the food runner explained they made a mistake and the dough nuggets would be out soon. Five minutes pass and the nuggets finally arrive. I asked the food runner if we would be getting a discount on them since they were late. She didn't know. When checking out, we were charged. I inquired and the bartender (Kaylee) informed me that they only discount or remove food if it's undercooked. I wasn't going to argue but asked to speak to the manager to inform them of my dissatisfaction.
