Came in on a farmer's market day to repair a badly chipped VG10 Gyuto (Japanese chef's knife) I've had for some years. I'd thought it was ruined beyond reasonable repair because the damage is located towards the heel of the blade, and it was very bad damage (multiple chips of a few millimeters into the blade). For various reasons, I chose to bring my usual kit to Mike to be serviced and the gyuto in question to be repaired for sentimental sake (it's been broken for years, and I didn't bother to fix it as it was already a budget buy when I got it factory new). I was going to use it as a home knife instead of bringing it back to my work kit because I know that repairs of this level often change the knife's profile in some way because it needed a regrind. Mike serviced all seven of my knives, including the regrind and repair of the gyuto, masterfully and very quickly (under an hour). The knife came back with minimal change to its profile and retained its 50/50 bevel throughout. I'm very impressed with his work and will definitely recommend bringing your tools to him. He has both the skill and equipment to service and repair them. He is a master craftsperson and you will not be disappointed with Mike's work. Edit: It was also a real deal! Having not sharpened our kitchen knives for many years, we finally got this done after seeing them at the Burlingame Market. They travel to various farmer's markets and also do house calls if you meet a minimum. Prices were $1 per inch and we paid $19 to get three knives done. They provide a market discount as well so be sure to ask for it. They can get pretty busy so I recommend heading to the Farmers market early to make sure you can get them done. We arrived about 30min after they opened and had to wait about 40min for them to finish. Since this is the first time I had this service done, I have nothing else to compare it to. I have a lot of knives and we cook at home a lot so they get used often. I was manning up and getting out my trusty Lansky once a few months after the knives became really dangerous to use (the knives are dangerous when they are dull, not sharp). Years ago, I had some kitchen knives sharpened at a San Mateo shop around Palm Ave, I believe. The price was expensive. And some of the knives had the part of the knife above the blade rounded out. What I liked about the sharpening Mike did on my knives was that only the blade was sharpened up. It's nice to have sharp knives again as I cook quite a bit. I will definitely use his services again. It's funny, when I picked up the knives he joked, "Those knives are sharp, don't cut yourself. When you come back I'm gonna check your hands for scars." I came across this business while at the San Carlos Farmer's Market about 5 months ago. He's there twice a month, in the BofA parking lot. He does a great job. The wait is never too long. I drop off my knives and then I shop at the farmer's market and by the time I'm finished buying my produce, my knives are done! His pricing is reasonable--it was less the $14 to sharpen a Chinese cleaver. My Japanese knife (5") plus a chef's knife (7") was under about $10...that is a great price for 2 knives!! bring all my knives to him. I gave him old pizza cutter I found cleaning my mom's kitchen. It was dull and hasn't been used in over 25 years. He gladly sharpened it and, at no charge. What a great guy! A unexpectedly confrontational encounter with Michael Uno at Finer Edge when he arrived at our home for a scheduled knife sharpening appointment. Michael requested pre-payment which we were happy to oblige. We made a simple mistake, mistyping a letter in his personal email address on PayPal, causing him to not receive our payment immediately. Within minutes, when our payment had not been accepted, we asked Michael to re-confirm his email, reading it back to him. Apparently our mistake sent Michael into a tizzy. He cut-off the conversation, calling the five, maybe seven, minutes he had spent on our property a "nightmare" and proceeded haughtily to hand our knives back. The punishment for our "crime" still leaves us baffled. While we recognize the oddity of our interaction as a blessing in disguise (we would rather support businesses that treat its customers respectfully) we are sharing with others for future consideration. LOVED the fact that he does house calls - incredibly convenient and makes a great surprise gift :) It is a 10 knife minimum for house calls, and I didn't realize that my apartment parking area didn't have adequate space size for his truck setup! I'm so grateful for Finest-Edge Precision's Mike and Liana because they beautifully restored a historic family heirloom that needed a lot of work and TLC. I have a 1950s Forgecraft Hi-Carbon knife needed basic blade repair and sharpening, but also required a potential overhaul on a badly worn handle. This hazardous handle sported incredible amounts of organic build-up (aka "gunk"), and missed a couple necessary divots. I wasn't really sure what could be salvaged from this original handle, but sought out a solution because the knife had sentimental value to my family. After consulting numerous knife sharpening and repair services to no avail, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Mike at Finest-Edge Precision not only offered to see how he could help, but grasped the value and personal sentiment this knife presented to my family. Most repair services I called said that they couldn't work on handles, or asked upwards of $100 for their services to restore and repair the handle alone. I conveniently dropped it off with Mike and Liana in Menlo Park, and picked up the knife a couple weeks later at the Saratoga farmer's market (West Valley College). Mike had not only repaired and sharpened the knife blade, but also completely restored the original handle into excellent working condition! He cleaning out all the gunk, adding some new divots, and restored the original wood with some additional touch-up and finishing. I'm so thankful that Finest-Edge Precision took on this project and helped restore this knife for a reasonable and fair price. I understand that most knife sharpening services focus only on blade repair and services, especially since it's more profitable and less time consuming than handle repair. I don't usually write negative reviews except that this guy's treatment of me this afternoon was so in-your-face rude, that I felt I had to. He told me he stops accepting orders after 1:45 pm. I drove a fair distance back to his operation and arrived at 1:30, at which point he told me he's not accepting any more orders for the day. It wouldn't have been so insulting, except that he accepted the order from the guy in right ahead of me, then decided to cut it off at me. A total waste of my time and unprofessional to boot. Sir, if you're participating in a Farmer's Market and specifically tell me you stop accepting orders at 1:45, and I arrive with my order at 1:30, you should honor your commitment. They started by accommodating my schedule, sending me reminder about the appointment the day before, arriving at my house on time, sharpening all 18 knives in less than 40 min. After the job, they also reminded me that 2 of the knives are single beveled and if I take them to someone else to sharpen, make sure they know so they sharpen them the right way to avoid damage. I was really pleasantly surprised by their attention to details! Lastly, after I paid and they left, I saw on the receipt that they charged me less fee than they should. Hands down a 5 star rating. I arranged knife sharpening for my mom for Mother's Day, which Liana made a breeze even though I wouldn't be there. They showed up on time and took great care of her. When Mike shows up with the truck, people will notice! Curious neighbors came from up and down the block, some bringing knives of their own to get sharpened. Definitely an extra bonus when Mom gets to brag. Of course, the biggest deal is the service. Mike took care of all of my folks' knives at a great price. The folks have a classic knife sharpening machine that they use biannually, but there it just isn't the same as a professional job. Mom also had old knives that hadn't been properly sharpened in about a decade, including my Grandmother's Tungston-Carbide steak knives, which are now in perfect shape. Mike knew right away what they were and took extra care. He was even able to repair an old knife that had a heavily bent edge so they can use it again.
