I appreciate that Katie knows how to work with me as I am very "flexy" which make some moves uncomfortable. Katie offers tips and tricks as well as modifications that have allowed me to safely accomplish moves that were previously uncomfortable. Karla is fun, calm, supportive and extremely encouraging. Karla's approach and style of teaching and coaching is very unique in the sense that Karla often focuses on how moves feel in the body versus how they look- I absolutely love this! Karla creates a safe and comfortable environment for me to express myself and reconnect and explore mind and body connection. Both Katie and Karla are great assets to the industry. Aresha is kind, professional, quick to respond to emails/calls/texts, and always delivers great customer service. The studio is a vibe- I appreciate the lighting because it makes all the difference. An area for improvement to consider is the ratio of class size to pole availability. Classes are often overbooked which forces us to share poles. This reduces the amount of time we spend using a pole while still having to pay the full rate for less pole time.

What is the most Portland thing that I've ever done in Portland? Easy, it's the Every Wednesday…read moreSquare Dance. What's that? It's a square dance. And it happens every Wednesday. Yes, their name is very informative. When my friend brought me to the EWSD it was a surprise, and I had no idea what we would be doing until I saw the sign. Smart move on his part, as it was too late for me to back out. Atop Oregon Public House, we head up the stairs and enter The Village Ballroom, a rustic and cute spot that is the perfect venue for a hoedown! Knowing that I would need some liquid courage, I went straight to the bar. OPH drafts were $5 each, and they had affordable wine and beer options. Radlers were only $3, people! That's just crazy! Lasting from 7-9pm, we got there at the very beginning and the crowd was sparse, and had a lot of young children. It was adorable, and I enjoyed the added benefit of being almost guaranteed to not be the worst dancer on the floor. The caller for the night (Marta King) walked the crowd through the very basics, and soon the band (Missouri Turnaround) started up. For the next two hours, we square danced our hearts out! As the evening progressed the ballroom filled up. The kids disappeared and were replaced by seemingly everybody who had ever been an extra on Portlandia. Square Dancing is hip, ya'll. Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of types of people, but I was shocked at how young and cool the crowd was. This isn't your grandpa's square dance, but your grandpa would totally be welcome to join. As the evening progressed, so did the dances and soon I was lost. But that was also perfectly OK! What I really loved was that everybody was so genuine in their enjoyment. Even though we were TERRIBLE and basically just bumping into each other the whole time, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face. This is some good times people, even if I myself didn't believe it at first. There's a $7 recommended donation to cover the costs, though it's sliding if you can't afford that. If you can afford more, you should consider giving it. This is a really unique opportunity in Portland, and I'm glad to have discovered it.

This place is perfect - Becca has the greatest environment for getting your creative juices flowing - chocolate, wine and great music! I came here with a group of gals looking for a fun time that wasn't your usual "Girls Night Out" - exactly what we received! Her studio is a great space where you can create anything you like - earrings, jewelry, belt buckles, coasters, trivets, display pieces, and anything you can think of! Becca has an incredible assortment of glass, colors, frit, and the possibilities are endless. Becca is a great instructor that encourages everyone to just go with the flow - she can help generate ideas, but is also in great support of letting you do your thing. Let her know what you need and she will have 5 ideas for you! She has lots of examples and visuals on the wall that help you get some ideas. Jennifer Wells Design is a hidden gem - the decorating pottery thing is so cliche, this is not! Once you complete your item(s), she will fire it in her kilns on site and have it ready for your pick up. The piece I made turned out awesome and I can't wait to get back there to make something else!

The drink prices are a bit steep - $18 for a CAN of cheap wine. The performance tonight was so not worth the ticket price. We are jazz fans and this show was a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. The sax player and pianist were really great... but how do you have a tribute show to Armstrong without a horn?? The two singers, well I'll try to be kind. They just don't get the songs they are singing. Sinatra was a crooner.the gentleman trying to portray his music had no depth, or concept of this style. It was a low tide performance that should have been a hurricane of energy! The lady singing the jazz songs was a tier two performer. Not horrible, but Luke warm. It was a disappointing evening. In typical Portland fashion, the Abbey is in an older neighborhood mixed in between homes and businesses. The building itself seems to have been recently renovated and looks wonderful! Everything is clean and seems newer, and the staff were friendly. We were given first timer information upon entry, although we probably could have figured things out on our own considering its size. There is a bar adjacent to the main area which made for easy access to pizza and drinks. They do have a limited menu but I appreciated the tasty Old Fashion I got, and my son enjoyed the pizza & candy. The acoustics were booming. It was loud downstairs! I overheard another patron saying people could go upstairs if the volume was too much where we were (I did not go upstairs). There is a little area for dancing and hanging out on both sides of the main seating area, as well as at the back of the room. I really liked it here! I hope I have other opportunities to return to the Abbey :)

After the first class I was hooked. Booty Luv is an awesome combination of dance, Pilates, yoga (plus some other stuff). It is SO fun, the hour flies by. There is upbeat music and an exciting atmosphere. Throughout the workout she explains what area you're working and why. It's an incredible work out that burns fat & builds lean muscle but also helps with flexibility and stability. (Which I need all of!) Heather's X Cycling classes and Pilates classes at ME are also highly recommended! The X Cycling class is cool because it's 30 minutes of cycling and 30 minutes of light weights, an effective way to spend an hour. I have worked with Heather as a personal trainer as well recently and it was a positive experience. She really listened to what I was hoping to accomplish and took into account that I had a lower back injury and had not worked out in a while. With that she created a personalized program that I'm still following, even after I had completed all my sessions. Heather's knowledge and communication style is topnotch. I have learned so much from her and have adopted a much more active and healthy lifestyle. I always leave her class or training feeling really good and excited to go back.
