The staff is great. Helpful and well prepared. The venue is clean, comfortable seating. The views from the back of the theatre aren't great if you are under 6' tall. The drink prices are a bit steep - $18 for a CAN of cheap wine. The performance tonight was so not worth the ticket price. We are jazz fans and this show was a tribute to Frank Sinatra and Louis Armstrong. The sax player and pianist were really great... but how do you have a tribute show to Armstrong without a horn?? The two singers, well I'll try to be kind. They just don't get the songs they are singing. Sinatra was a crooner.the gentleman trying to portray his music had no depth, or concept of this style. It was a low tide performance that should have been a hurricane of energy! The lady singing the jazz songs was a tier two performer. Not horrible, but Luke warm. It was a disappointing evening. What a great little venue. There is ADA parking out front (2 that I noticed), and while there isn't a dedicated lot, I did see quite a bit of street parking available when I showed up on an early Sunday evening. In typical Portland fashion, the Abbey is in an older neighborhood mixed in between homes and businesses. The building itself seems to have been recently renovated and looks wonderful! Everything is clean and seems newer, and the staff were friendly. We were given first timer information upon entry, although we probably could have figured things out on our own considering its size. There is a bar adjacent to the main area which made for easy access to pizza and drinks. They do have a limited menu but I appreciated the tasty Old Fashion I got, and my son enjoyed the pizza & candy. The acoustics were booming. It was loud downstairs! I overheard another patron saying people could go upstairs if the volume was too much where we were (I did not go upstairs). There is a little area for dancing and hanging out on both sides of the main seating area, as well as at the back of the room. I really liked it here! I hope I have other opportunities to return to the Abbey :) read more

Since this is a newer venue, they are working it out but I give five stars because they are so kind and WANT to work it out. Every time I come here is just better and better experiences with diversity at its forefront. A warning to have your patience with ADA because it is there - and they will help you out but patience since the building is not set up for it so they need to bring you up a side entrance for the elevator and it is a journey. There is a restroom on the main floor and a few more upstairs. A lot of buildings in Portland have nothing so I am grateful when the options are there. read more

The Alberta Abbey is an arts space in Portland for small events. Located in the Alberta neighborhood, it's owned by a 501 nonprofit, and they provide the space for local events. I went here to see, 'The Amazing Bubble Man'. I believe there are small concerts here, too, I imagine there are plays and other small fun art projects. There is some parking across in a lot as well as the bus line drops off nearby + street parking. There is main floor and even balcony seating - probably a good 300+ seats total. This is such a great community venue. The staff really cares and it just has a lot of heart overall. I'd say they have some of the most diverse programming I've seen at a venue in Portland. Drinks and food prices are on par with what you'd expect. Building is on the older side but it's changed a lot in the last few years. They're really working hard to improve things for everyone. read more

So this was an ok venue? I can't go full stars because the accessible entrance is kind of a nightmare - they have to bring you in through backstage and the ushers were .... pretty confused about how exactly this was meant to work. It would be great if they could maybe get a bit more training around that. And it was hella steep and kinda felt a bit dangerous, to be honest. Loved the themed drinks and availability of pizza. Not a ton of bathrooms and most of them are not accessible, either. One was, but you roll the dice with the line on that. read more

Cute little church. It was the perfect little intimate venue to watch North Mississippi Allstars! Sound was great. There was a little balcony and people were able to look down over the main area. There's a nice little bar with some beer and some cocktails. You could buy bottled water or they have a free water station. You could also get some candy bars and chips or have a slice of pizza. Prices were pretty middle of the road, I didn't think it was overpriced. I will definitely come back to this venue. There really wasn't a bad seat. It had plenty of restrooms also. Free parking across the street but just know that if you get there sort of early and it's not crowded by the time the night ends, you will have to wiggle your way out of that parking lot! I've gone to this venue for 4 completely different shows and enjoyed myself each time (Shemekia Copeland, Lady A Blues, "Monkey with a hat" 10 min play festival, & Nik West). I like that you can buy in advance, or buy a ticket at the door (you do not need smart phone). Great AC on a 90 degree day. Great view in upstairs balcony (wooden seats), where also 2 bathrooms. Downstairs has comfortable padded seats, and 1 restroom (and room to dance). I love that the sound always mixed well, and have not needed to put in ear plugs. Very friendly and helpful staff. Large stage with room for the bands to stretch out. Only a small parking lot across the street, but easy street parking in the neighborhood. read more

First time at Alberta Abbey was Saturday, 11/11 to see The Empire Strips Back. No complaints with the show, from what I could see it was amazing. My issue is the venue itself. Unless you were in the front row it was very hard to see what was happening on stage, especially when the performers would lay down or do anything that was below the level of everyone sitting in front of me. I wasn't the only one having issues with being able to see either. I overheard several other people saying the same thing, and the friends that I was sitting with also couldn't see much. read more

The Abbey provides affordable space for artists and has a clear mission in service of the community. It's also a fun and unique space. The building is huge, housing multiple event spaces and smaller studio spaces. I've attended a few events there in the last year and had a blast at each one, the most recent being the highly entertaining Star Wars themed burlesque show: The Empire Strips Back. Nic West is playing a New Year's Eve show and I just know it's gonna be the funkiest. It's just an incredibly special foundation/venue and Portland needs more places like that. read more

What a dump. Just saw a show there and this place is on par with an abandoned K-8 school auditorium from the 1940s. Super uncomfortable seats, 3 gross bathrooms (2 are single user), awful expensive drinks and overall needs to be power washed. We all agreed we would never see a show/event at this venue. read more

I can here for a show and pretty disappointed. They said the had a wheelchair accessible entrance. Well, they did not, its on the side leading to a ramp that is not ADA compliant. It's very steep and they help you up. Once you get inside the halls are very narrow so if you need the bathroom, we'll you can't go. Awful experience read more

I have been attending musical events at Alberta Abbey in their main hall. It is exciting to see the building opened up to community use. My friends who have rented it report the staff are great to work with and gracious, I have met some in the space and agree! The building was built in the 1920's. It looks newer and is in good repair. The main hall is in minimal deco style. It's very neutral in appearance with no religious icons. It has comfortable cushy movie theater seats, 20-30 year vintage style, not pews. There are full width steps connecting the hardwood floor stage and the audience area. The main hall is all hard surfaces, save a carpeted floor. That results in an acoustically live hall which makes most styles of music sound good. Very little sound amplification is needed. The seats are not acoustically neutral,occupied or not, so the hall is going to change acoustically when it is packed. There is an on-stage upright piano and, in the back loge, a 3/4 grand. There is a balcony with seating. The former altar-stage area is very large and deep, like half a symphony large. Over the two years I have attended events I have seen continual renovation and restoration. Exploring the building, I saw rooms of various sizes which could contribute to an event. That includes a large ballroom, with a good size stage. They have non-profit and for profit rates. They would be perfect for a wedding with reception of a certain size, the main hall holds ~370 seated. With the variety of spaces, smaller would work as well. They have a calendar of public events they host, music, storytelling, puppets, theater, lectures. It can be privately rented for regular church services. The Alberta Abbey is a fine ex-church. It serves congregations and new creative congregations. In the here and the hereafter. read more

A nice spacious location that is right on Alberta and very accessible. I was there for a cycling event and though the room was full, it never got too hot. The space seemed very appropriate for what we were there for, well kept and clean. read more

Went to see Hunchback of Notre Dame today. The theater is an intimate space but big enough to allow for a sizable production. Choir, orchestra, sets and all. It's still playing 8/3, 8/4 and 8/5. Take the family! $15 per ticket for 2 1/2 hours of quality entertainment. read more

Billy and Joey are the absolute best! They got back to me quickly and answered all my questions in a professional and friendly manner. They warned us it might be cold in the morning and then proceeded to add space heaters to make sure we weren't uncomfortable. They are considerate and wonderful people who run a lovely space.
