There - on the corner of Shakespeare Walk and Allen Road, did I detect a shop that actually not featured a sign, but that oozed with coziness and a promise of good coffee and food. Sure enough, when I walked inside I was greeted with the smell of freshly ground coffee and wafts of toasted bread made its way to my nostrils. I appreciated the loaves of fresh bread on the counter, but being on the way to Broadway Market I decided to hold off on a purchase just yet. Instead, I went for a simple Americano to take-away. I really enjoyed this little trip over here and promised to be back soon again. All the other patrons looked very satisfied: reading the weekend edition of the Guardian while nibbling away on something delicious or chatting with a friend in a corner of the store...it all looked so comforting and if I hadn't had my dog waiting for me outside, I would've definitely prolonged my stay here ;-) Still, I wonder what's up with not displaying their name on the outside of the store?

The Squirrel and the chocolate lover in me is now complete. I have to move house before I put on any more weight.

The breakfast menu is simple but the quality of the core produce is way better than anything I've tasted nearby - to date. I've also experienced a number of poached egg disasters at restaurants recently, but these guys nailed it. Hallelujah for the soft warm yolky loveliness... The service was great too - young and friendly staff who were happy to serve and help. I didn't get to see the lunch menu so can't comment on this, but I was also intrigued to learn that Masterchef finalist Chris Georgiou uses this place for a gourmet burger night which takes place from Wednesday - Saturday called Gastronomical. Big windows let in lots of light and provide a breezy street view. Staff: Absolutely lovely, friendly and warm. Every time I've gone I've been greeted warmly and made to feel 'at home'. You're able to relax and enjoy your meal; I've never had an issue where I've felt 'moved on' by the staff which can happen sometimes at popular places. And now for the food: Always excellent. My companion has ordered the steak onglette several times and was consistently pleased with the flavoursome flesh. I've had the salmon and sea bass dishes and both were done perfectly light and flaky.Their chips are generally excellent too: hot, crispy..... mmmmm. I very much like that the menu proudly identifies the food source: from my last few visits the fish was supplied from John Norris and the meat from Ginger Pig. To top it off, the desserts are simply divine. For a small end-of-meal treat I heartily recommend the Affogato. I'm also a fan of their Pannacotta (see photo I've posted, with seasonal berries). It rolls onto the tongue and gently dissolves in a mouthful of soft and sweet goodness. I just realised I haven't even mentioned the booze! At your disposal here is a very good selection of ales, ciders, and red and white wine. Useful if you are visiting with a group who aren't all just beer drinkers. My favourite is the almond croissant which is dusted in with powdered sugar and perfect with coffee. Belle is a proper French cafe because in addition to having a variety of breads and croissants, they serve a diverse menu. If you are in a rush you can quickly grad a sandwich, mini pizza or salad for take away. If time permits, you can sit at one of the indoor or outdoor tables and take in a full meal. The cafe is full of dark hard wood floors and tables giving a warm feel. In addition the shelves are filled with numerous items for purchase. The goat cheese and spinach quiche, if eaten in, is served with a non-traditional salad. The salad I enjoyed had cubed beets, tomato, cucumber, snow peas and pear coleslaw. The salad was light, delicious and fresh! In my processed world, a fresh salad is a welcome joy. The quiche was equally wonderful. The blend of flavours made me saviour each bit and the perfectly golden crust added just the right contrast in texture. I love coming to Belle Epoque! It's perfect for the morning if you just want a fresh croissant and fresh squeezed orange juice and equally perfect for the afternoon for a cappuccino and pastry or lunch.
