Great free past time in SD! We actually accidentally stumbled here trying to find the cat jetty, but it was a great excursion either way. You could technically park at the start and walk through it and there's water and people playing with their dogs, or you can drive through or bicycle through all of it and take periodic breaks to take in the scenery and the cool marine air. By disgusting LA beach standards, it's actually pretty clean. A bit of trash and maybe SOME dog turds here and there, but it wasn't repulsive. Great for some scenic photos or playing with your dogs in the water if you have dogs. If I was closer, I'd take my bearded dragon in the summer. Since it was December, air was nice and crisp in the morning. Gray clouds in the sky. Chill to walk through. You can see some shells on the beach and some water fowl flying through. There's some interesting RV's posted up, saw one with a cute orange cat denizen inside. Good to spend an hour or so to hang out. read more

We were meeting our cousin for a dog walk and decided to come early and check out the entire area. We drove all around and followed the one way loop. We then came back to park and walked around. You can walk, go on a bike ride, or go into the water. We saw people on their kayaks and jet skiing. We saw different areas for a bonfire. Lots of people laying on blankets taking in the water views with a book!! Families having a picnic enjoying family time. There were groups doing stretches and yoga. It's a 4.2 mile loop trail for your walks, runs, or a beautiful scenic drive!! There's bathroom available as well. Bring lots of water! Hydration is a must when walking or running. Horse back riding is also permitted. We didn't see anyone on horseback. Overall, a nice park to enjoy. I'd bring lots of blankets. We had a tarp to put on the ground. Then a blanket on top so we didn't stick to the tarp! Light blanket to cover when the sun goes down! The other side has a large off leash dog park to walk and run! We really enjoyed this area. I am so lucky to live only 5 minutes from Fiesta Island. I bring my dog here often and she enjoys being off leash, sniffing everything, and having zoomies in the water. In the fenced dog park, we've had the good fortune of nearly always coming across other friendly dogs & dog guardians (with only one exception that happened a few years ago) so I feel like that's been pretty great for us socially. The terrain at Fiesta island is mostly slightly rocky, hard packed sand and looser sand closer to the shoreline. I usually wear flip flops if I'm going to play with Cali in the water, but sneakers or trail shoes can also be practical here to avoid stubbed toes. We can easily get close to 10,000 steps just walking around the perimeter of the dog area. The walking path for all of Fiesta Island is 4.2 miles! In the springtime, the dog park has experienced wildflower superblooms which are magnificent to witness. There are a few benches under the copse of trees, but otherwise, if you want to sit, it'll be on sand or a chair or blanket you brought. Make sure you bring plenty of drinking water! It can get very hot, and there's no public potable water in the park. Recreationally, I have also had the pleasure of riding a horse at Fiesta as well. So much fun! Fiesta does mean party after all, right? I've seen all sorts of other recreational things happening at Fiesta, too... kayaking, jet skiing, swimming, grilling, chilling, and enjoying the water. Of course, there are designated fire pits! I've also seen a little 4x4 action on the sand, boating, kiteboarding, and model airplane flying... Fiesta really does have something for everyone. Notes: It can get very busy and crowded in the summer though so I avoid it on days when I know everyone is going to be out! Portapotties here and there... not that many though! KITE BOARDING AND SHELLS For kiteboarding: - if on the water, maybe ok - if practicing off water, beware of shells everywhere I have kite boarded in Long Beach but long forgotten the sport. Years past, my gear has been in storage, and with age nothing gets easier. Although I got IKO certified and went to class - it was wise to hire an instructor for a couple private lessons, in new grounds and new wind, etc. BUT... First time in SD and likely my last!!! I will make do and do in Long Beach moving forward. :: THE EXPERIENCE :: Uhm. First and foremost, likely the wrong instructor. Older guy and an expert at the sport (there are a few of them for hire). I'm there to rekindle the sport not hear about how terrible your experience is on dating site. Who cares??!! I'm not paying yah to attend a pity party. Choose instructor wisely! Practicing off waters was practicing in the middle of Fiesta island.. where there is a huge area of sand (and a gazillion shells). Not fine sand I am use to at Long Beach. I was told to have shoes, so I had my water shoes. It was hot af so I had shorts on... my kite is size 8 and wind wasn't that strong but enough for kite boarders to come out. Without good assistance, my kite picked me up and dragged me through the sand and shells - NOT FUN. The next day, we decided to use my smaller kite size 6. What ticks me off... those shells can f* up your kites. Not worth it knowing the cost of gear you invest in. Made me call it quits in San Diego. Don't feel the space is appropriate for learning. The area is narrow and there are so many people and dogs. A kite going down can easily do a lot of harm to someone. Or if the bridals cut someone. I just see this area as hazardous for beginners. Beautiful, quaint, well-maintained! I checked out this area for the first time on a Wednesday evening. The island is right off the freeway, so it is very accessible. The drive along the island is great and since I came in the beginning of spring (March 20), the flowers were in full bloom! There is plenty of parking and space so that you can have your privacy if you wish. The water is calm and shallow, resembling the same shore as a lake. We saw people riding jet skis, kayaks, and paddle boards which I would love to try next time I visit! My favorite part was seeing all the dogs that showed up at the beach around 5:30pm. They were splashing around and enjoying the area which made me so happy, especially after a stressful day of work. I'm not sure how busy it gets on the weekends, but would definitely recommend as a nice place to relax, go for a walk, ride a bike, etc to end the day. Another thing to note is that there are no bathrooms on the island, but some portables scattered throughout. read more

I loved sitting on the sand and watching the sunset. Major bonus points for this location to be the perfect spot to watch the fireworks from Seaworld for free. What a great show, you have a perfect view of the fireworks! They have porta potties, bbq pits & trash cans in select areas. There is a lot of free parking throughout the entire area. You will see people bbqing, relaxing, paddle boarding and kids playing in the water. The water is fairly still, it was perfect for our small children . I would say the water is definitely not the cleanest, I'm glad we had extra water to hose off with. I would definitely come back again and make a day out of it! Recent report about strict enforcement of closing time. While closing time/locked gate may not have been strictly enforced, now it is. Meaning the current 10pm closing time is just that. If you are not out of the park prior to 10pm, gate closing, rangers will issue you a $52.50 ticket at the gate. Even if you leave close to closing time, when the rangers block all vehicles leaving at exactly 10pm, you may be caught in line. Will be issued a ticket. No exact signage states this other than gate closing at 10pm. To avoid a ticket, ensure you are out of the part well ahead of closing time. read more

Great not too crowded place to take your dogs, your camping gear, your paddle board whatever your heart desires. It was windy and muggy when we went recently however the sun started appearing. Depending on where you set up shop it can get quiet choppy waters but i had fun regardless. My dog enjoyed himself. Lots of places where he can run and be free! We just LOVE bringing our dogs here & come every weekend so that our dogs can have their little off leash fun. The people here are so sweet + friendly, & they have tons of water for your pups. Five stars from both myself and my dog! I love that there is so much room for him to run around and not just on the beach! He is obsessed with fetch and sometimes the sand will get in his eyes/nose/everywhere so he really likes going to "higher" parts of fiesta Island and playing in the grass. Owners are usually pretty respectful and the space is large enough to keep your distance if your dog isn't super jazzed about playing with other animals. I wouldn't bring an unfriendly dog though- the trails overlap and you'll definitely encounter a few wanting to check out your pack. The views are beautiful- I always bring a jacket though because it can get cold with the wind. read more

One of my favorite places in San Diego! You can do so much here... BBQ, Paddle Board, Take a dip in the water, bike, walk your dog... you get the point. My dog also enjoys coming here and splashing around for a few hours. It does get busy in warmer months especially during the weekends. Weekdays are definitely more chill, as well as San Diego's cooler months. It's pretty clean for the most part. Visitors do a pretty good job of cleaning up after themselves and their puppers. An update to my previous review this time from a biking standpoint. Probably one of the best options in town. The road is designated for full biking use. Drivers on the road need to approach and pass with caution and they know this. I found the loop around FI to be wide enough and ample to use even with the car traffic, foot traffic from those running/walking, and from other bikers. Comparing this to the likes of the Silver Strand, I found the people using the bike loop to be a tad bit more respectful and less obnoxious than the bikers in Coronado who have a somewhat entitled attitude that they own the actual road. The view of the bay is not up to par with the Silver Strand but I will take FI all day for the simple fact that it's easier to navigate. read more

AMAZING PLACE FOR FIREWORKS! Rumors say Katy Perry wrote fireworks here-- ha ha. Sea world does their fireworks here almost every night during the summer and Fiesta Island has the best view! The reflection of the fireworks on the bay is truly spectacular. Parking is easy and you can just lay out a blanket on the shore to watch and bring some picnic snacks! This is a MUST DO in San Diego. Fair warning Now, most will likely wonder why I may be stating the obvious, but I just wanted to be sure people are aware. First, FI is a great place to hang out for just about anything. Just avoid letting your dog play or wade in the water. It is not safe. Water is contaminated and unhealthy. I've known at least 4 dogs who were really sick, for days and some a few weeks. Vets couldn't determine what was wrong. What they all had in common was being in the water at Fiesta island. A few other dogs were at dog beach near Coronado north island. Same symptoms. The TJ river is still polluting our waters. Symptoms are similar to Guardia. But when tested for it, results were negative. All I'm saying is avoid the waters around the beaches and bay for your pets. Good luck! read more

By far my favorite place in all of San Diego. She-ra and I, love coming here. We try to go at least once a week for a nice hour walk and plenty of running in the water for her. She-ra is a shiba inu. There is always plenty of parking but if you plan on coming on the weekend, be sure to check if fiesta island is having some kind of event because you might have a hard time finding parking. There are plenty of poop bags and plenty of space for your dog to run wild, interact with other awesome dogs, water bowls in the center with tables and plenty and plenty of fresh air! I grew up in San Diego and remember coming to Fiesta Island several times as a kid with my mom. Unfortunately I haven't really visited it much over the years since then until recently. My dog really loves this place. Fiesta Island is home to one of the bigger off leash dog parks in San Diego City, they have a large open area for dogs to play in that's fenced in from the beach area. It's not just for dogs either, a lot people come here for water activities such as water skiing, kayaking and even paddle boarding. I don't really venture out into the water much though, I just enjoy walking my dog here. The ocean breeze makes summer days cooler and cold days seem warmer than inland San Diego. Because of all its nice features, this island can get relatively busy on the weekends and they hold some major big events on the island as well, I'd avoid the place if you see a line developing around SeaWorld Drive because one huge downfall to this place is there is only one entrance and exit, when it gets busy you can easily get locked in here behind a line of cars. Another thing I don't appreciate is people leaving their trash on the beach here, for some reason this place attracts tons of people who don't know how to pick up after themselves. But Mission Bay will always remain a place I remember as kid and for that I really enjoy coming back here now more than ever. read more

Both times I was here were genuinely traumatizing. The first time i didn't realize the middle area was a dark abyss of nothingness. Walked around for 4 hours trying to find my way out - I thought I was in purgatory. The fog + my bad sense of direction + me being alone = me crying calling friends for a rescue crew The second time I apparently was behind the park ranger that closes the gate, and after deciding I wanted to leave 10 minutes later, i drove to the gate: very locked. And there's NO WAY around it. I called the park rangers office, sent emails to them and city works, called the police. When the cops did show up - both stars are die them trying to help - they said they don't have a key?????? How is that safe???? So ONE person has a freeking key? What if there's an emergency?? No wonder they find bodies burned in the fire pits read more

Love summer nights on fiesta island!! I do wish that it was a bit cleaner but I really wish people were less disgusting! There are far too many nails, broken glass, and trash on the ground. They have so many empty trash cans!!! Clean up after yourselves people! Looking past that, this is the best spot to wind down, enjoy the summer sky, the calm bay, and the company of your friends or a good book! In the summer you can see the fire works from just about anywhere on the island but I recommend heading toward the end if your just there for that! Traffic leaving after the fire works can cause a bit of a jam. Please remember to clean up after yourselves and do not burn crap in the fire pits that is harmful or not meant to be burned (cans, bottles, plastic, styrofoam etc!) Fiesta Island is every pet owners little haven and favorite get-away all year round in San Diego. I feel you only wander out to this location if you have a pet therefore making it the best goto spot on a hot summer day when people are crowding the nearby beaches in Mission Bay and Ocean Beach. Follow the signs to the entrance and make your way around the island in a counter-clockwise fashion. You have the freedom of simply pulling off to the side anywhere where there is room and staking out a spot right at that location if you wish. My girl loves this place the most because it doesn't experience such a heavy current and waves aren't rolling in nearly as hard as it is at the beaches. She's a lab, loves the water, but isn't the strongest swimmer, so these are ideal conditions for her! Fiesta Island is also great for SUP, bonfires, jet skiing, and let's not forget the awesome sunsets at the end of a long summer's day. It's also in close proximity to SeaWorld so you can catch one of their nightly fire work shows if you wish. Such a nice place for relaxing and catching the rays in a not-so-crowded area! I'll go crazy if the City of San Diego chooses one day to develop this paradise. Please don't do it! read more
