Raid 0 striped 2x2gb platter disks. One of them failed. It crashed pretty hard. The motor in the HD went out and the read/write head was broken. Fields recovered the data and saved it to an external drive and sent me my original drives back. In the end, I got what I paid for. Now the rest of it... don't pay for expedited service. I did and I still had to wait 5 weeks to get my data back. They told me it was the drives fault and they had to use a second set of parts to get the drive to read. This was after the 10 business days of the expiated services of course. I had to frequently email the company to get updates. They are not good w/ keeping you updated on their own. They did respond to email within 24 hours, most of the time the same day. They are really persistent with making sure you pay them thier money, will call you every hour if you need to make arrangements to get some money together. It was expensive. The website estimates... forget that. 3x the website estimates, easy. They have a charge for everything. The cost is non-refundable, even if they can't recover your data. It feels like a gamble when you make the deal, but for some, the data is worth it. In my case, it was worth it. Some of the data recovered was gibberish. Most of the pictures were intact but some were put back together in the wrong order. Like the data was puzzled together just any old way. But that is because of the raid failing. The data is paired on 2 drives and one got corrupted. That isn't Field's fault, just telling you what I had happen to me. Almost all of the word and pdf and excel documents were intact tho. Nothing had the original names on it, they give you back raw data. All the files are just simply numbered names and the folder structure is gone so all the files are just all lumped into one raw data folder. You'll have to go through each and every one and rename them. That was a pain, but again, the data was there for the most part. So there you have it. The good and the bad. These guys are expensive but the data was worth it to be recovered. If you want my advice, pay for Crashplan or Carbonite data backup service. It's way cheaper than data recovery!! Company would not work with us. Quoted us a really high price then came down. However, was not willing to do a contract with us to protect us as a small business. We asked them to sign a contract saying they would not charge more than what they quoted. Wouldn't do that. Asked if we could do A contract to pay half up front and then the rest when they recovered it. since there were no guarantees they would recover The info. 2650.00 is a significant amount of money for a small business to pay if they get nothing from it. Many other sites we looked into don't charge if they don't recover. This company will charge you up front with no remorse if they can't recover it. They are a scam!!! They were very helpful up until the point I paid them. Then I had to track them down repeatedly for a month to find out what was going on with the locked phone. The price went up almost double after the free diagnosis. I was very desperate to get the phone unlocked as it contains music and photos, etc. the supposed account manager never called me back after at least five or six left voicemails. Someone would always call me back but a different person who had no idea what was going on. Now I am waiting for the return of my phone after I had to ask them to send it back with a tracking confirmation. They were GREAT sales persons! They quoted incredible recovery success statistics! They sold me during their MULTIPLE sales calls by stating their policy... "If we don't recover your data, there's no charge. We will even pay for the shipping costs to return your SSD." They were even GREAT encouragers. As they supposedly strived to recover my drive, I called weekly for 3 or 4 weeks to check on progress. Intially, they said, "It's looking good. We've done blah blah blah." I was snowed with their technical terminology that (I now believe) was intended to impress me by being way above my head. On a subsequent call, I asked for a progress report and they stated that they just were not able to recover it. THEN, they went into their MARKETING mode again... They said, "There are a couple more things we can try." They told me it was a very expensive process, so if they did not recover the data, I would not receive a refund. Once again, I was convinced by their promises, and I foolishly agreed to continue. THEY NEVER RECOVERED ANY OF MY DATA! I lost my entire $1250, and gained nothing! After thinking it through, I decided to call them back one more time to request a discount... and receive at least some of my money back. In our last conversation, they communicated, saying that the individual who was responsible for the hard drive that we sent was on vacation. UPDATE: I've tried speaking to multiple people and just get the runaround. They are sending my original hard drive back, hopefully unharmed. However, customer service rep has told me since I agreed over the phone to the working list of what they recovered, not like I could tell if they'd be readable but they also showed to have files on there. But once I received the usb stick, none of the files had actual working files in them. Now, I'm being told there's nothing more that they can do since I agreed upon the recovered data. Tuesday rolls around and don't hear from my account rep, I tried calling with no answer. Reached out again and finally talked to him on 5/9 and was told it was still transferring. Communication is severely lacking at this company. I'm then told that theres been a problem but I have not been told anything else. After calling and either not speaking to anyone or getting the runaround, 5/29 A MONTH LATER, I am told that the firmware crashed while transferring and they only have what was able to be recovered before the crash. If only there was an option for negative stars. I'll preface this by saying, I understand there's a chance any company can't get the data back. But that doesn't allow for a company to provide awful customer service. They were very responsive when trying to get my business. My ask wasn't a tough one. Only when I called with another number did he pick up (and sounded flustered, which I would too if I was hiding and had to deliver news that the person is out $1000+ AND their pictures). He told me the news. They couldn't recover anything. I asked for a manager to call me back and spoke to them. This isn't just about losing my pictures. This is the fact that I spend over a grand thinking they could get them back and being left in the dark. I then got a lengthy email detailing why they couldn't give me any sort of refund. Keeping in mind, I wasn't pushing for one (as nice as it would have been). This tells me they get this request all the time and are just on autopilot as to how they respond. The only good thing I can say, is they are fast. I had a Samsung 2004 legacy 80gb IDE HDD that failed to boot. I asked for a quote. They quoted over $6,000 within a day or two of receiving the drive. I said that's way too much, so they sent me a directory of the files. Then the salesman said they already finished the work, even though I had not authorized it, so they need at least $2,000+ plus for "sunk costs". I still said that is too high, just return the drive and I will try another method. After a couple months they sent back the drive, and they wiped it. I had an external hard drive that failed. I'm a graphic designer and it had a lot of projects from the last 7 years that I often go back to in order make changes/updates for clients. The drive also had a lot of unnecessary content that did not need to be saved. I talked to a sales person (Kalep) at Fields data recovery who quoted me $99-850 to recover my files. As soon as I agreed to send in my drive, they switched me to a NEW person (Adam). He couldn't explain why the first person was no longer my contact, but Adam seemed to know what he was talking about and was fairly responsive so I went with it. After a few weeks, he sent me a list of files that could be recovered. There was one main folder of files that I needed, but they can't just pick and choose what can be recovered they have to do it all or nothing. I noted to Adam that the particular folder I REALLY needed seemed like the amount of data in it was far too small, but he said if it's listed they will recover it. So I paid about 3x what was originally quoted to me to get my files back. THEN I got passed over to person #3 (Ian). I asked numerous times why I was no longer dealing with Adam and Ian kept dodging the question, but I had already paid so I just went with it. However, Ian was not keeping me up to date like Adam had, he didn't return my calls. He called me to supposedly give me an update, got VM, he said he would call me back later and never did. I called him a few times after that to check on the status of my files and he just never called me back. I got my recovered files back and looked at the drive today and that ONE folder that I needed the most, has nothing in it. It has the folder structure so I can see all the files I NEED, but all the folders are empty. I don't feel that Fields was honest with me at any point in this process. I wish it was possible to give negative stars. We took our damaged portable hard drive there in hopes that they can fix it and retrieve the irreplaceable data that we had on there. Hundreds of thousands of pictures of our children growing up videos that we cannot replace. They tried to tell us that there was damage to the drive and they wanted $1500 to replace the part that was damaged. They told me this money was nonrefundable because they had to order a part. When I asked them what were the possibilities of the replaced part not working, they told me it could be 50-50. I explain to them that we just couldn't afford $1500 for a possible paperweight and no guarantee that they could fix it. They were rude and pushy and so I told him I would come pick up the device. I then sent the device to a real company Data Analysis in Florida. Today I received a horrible message from them. Apparently Fields did more damage to the device then I took it to them with. According to the guy I talk to it looks like fields damaged my device, so that the data was not recoverable because I was unwilling to pay their demands. We have now lost pieces of our life that are gone forever because these assh**es felt like playing games. I have never been so mad and so disgusted with a company in my life. The worse company ever, The only good part was the first phone conversation. Coz, they wanted to get the job, after that nobody is responsible for anything. They lied several times about the damages then they said they were able to recover 50% of the data and charged me hundreds of dollars. What I received on a flash memory was not even 1% of my photos from the HDD. After a lot of back and forth I got my hard drive back. Terrible experience with a horrible company. I had a two-bay RAID 1 configuration - so two-mirrored disks. When I spoke with the initial person and then later with the case manager, they told me that since they were the same, I could use the going rate of of an SSD recovery, which they listed as $300 to start, along with additional parts/services and cost of the replacement drive for recovery. This sounded fine and because they were a local company for me, I decided to go ahead. They did their free diagnostic service and gave me a new quote of $1250 - basically the quoted cost of a RAID reconstruction, which I did not need. The case manager was a complete jerk when I tried to explain what I had been told and agreed to and ask some simple questions to learn more about what I was paying for. He simply stated that he has no idea what the engineering department was doing and refused to ask anyone any questions to get me the information I was looking for. After just a couple of minutes on the phone, he literally told me to accept the offer or to get bent, that he had lots of paying customers to talk to. I told him I did not want the work to be done and to please ship me the drives back. After reading a lot of the reviews here, I am very worried about if and in what condition the drives will be in when I receive them. At least they did tell me the drives are fully recoverable. They sent self address stamped package for me to mail the hard drive to them even though there's an office right here in New York City. I am very sorry to say that I did not check Yelp or other online reviewer sites, and like so many fell victim to Fields Data Recovery. My work harddrive failed some months ago and a local place said that they couldn't get the drive to work, so I just started over with a new system. As time went on I decided that some of the files were worth the effort of trying to recover, so I filled out an online form for an estimate from Fields Data Recovery. That's when the high pressure tactics start. I was getting emails and phone calls daily promising a no cost, no obligation estimate. When I spoke to the sales rep (not a tech) they wanted to get the drive in immediately and emailed a prepaid UPS label, which I impetuously used before checking up on the company. BIG MISTAKE, there are tons of people with bad stories. Once they had it in their possession the high pressure really started. The initial low estimate was now $3500! But the rep said the engineers said the data was fully recoverable. I told them that was more than I thought the data was worth to me. The rep immediately said he would contact the engineers and try for a lower price. (This is a common high pressure tactic) The very next morning he told be the engineers could take $500 off of the price, so lets get a credit card number and get started. I said I was still uncertain that it was worth it to me. He went into a big song and dance about how much time and work was involved to repair it, how it involved disassembly in a clean room and replacing broken heads etc etc, and they were confident they could recover all data. He said they would email a list of the file names to prove they were accessible. When I saw the file list I felt I would go ahead and approve it, even though it was more than I should have spent. What I got was a thumbdrive that had a few of my lost files but also just empty folders for the really critical files that I was counting on. After they have your money you will get very little response. All I got was a lot of unreturned calls and a runaround. Even though they said they would return my old drive I had to complain until I finally got it back over a week later. Guess what? I took it to a local tech and he said the factory seals were still intact and the drive had never even been opened for repair in the first place! Just as I expected by this time, I had been totally lied to and ripped off. Very bad experience. Now instead of calling three times a day when they were trying to get my money, I get no replies to my questions. They have 2 stars for a reason, in spite of any possible phony 5star reviews.
