I am glad that as early as he finished grade school, he already knew what he wanted to pursue. I thought, the best way I could support him is to find a Magnet school that's closest to our home. For about half a year, he took the school bus, which practically equated to more than four hours of back-and-forth travel time each day. It was a lot of commitment and dedication on his part, and it was all worth the sweat and hard work especially when we were invited to attend the Medical Magnet Spirit Assembly to witness him receiving the academic excellence award for getting a 4.0 gpa. This school hones my son in a way that he learned more than classroom teachings. It offers a wholistic approach in developing the skills, experiences, and character of every student. In about 16 years from now, whether my son becomes a neurosurgeon or not, I'm sure he will always look back to his alma mater, knowing that James Madison is where his fondest middle school memories were created.

Yes some are good but most of them are horrible. While everyone were in class doing their things, in our class you had to stand in a line for at least 5 minutes before the teacher came and took attendance. Many bullies there too. I did not get bullied but saw others getting bullied all the time. Staff do not care about your health or mental state. I think I saw one teacher playing video games on class period. Whatever happens ask your kids and change their classes if they don't like them

You feel it the minute you walk on campus. The principal sets such a positive tone, and it trickles down through every part of the school. Teachers and staff know every child by name, and that kind of connection really sets Laurel Hall apart. Class sizes are small, which means our child gets personalized attention and are really seen not just another face in the crowd. It offers that classic, traditional school experience you might expect in a small town, but it's right here in the heart of the Valley. Yes, it's a private school and tuition isn't nothing- but compared to others in LA, it's very reasonable for what you get. We also weren't sure how we'd feel about the church affiliation going in, but honestly, it's light and sweet. Think Christmas songs and mostly the focus on kindness and compassion (with a little Jesus sprinkled in). Nothing heavy-handed at all. We feel so lucky to have found Laurel Hall. Our kids are thriving, and we genuinely love being part of this school community.

It's great that it includes both middle and high school with a relatively small number of students, so everyone knows each other. There is no bullying, and there is a real sense of safety and responsibility. The program is highly rigorous and challenging (all students in the program are studying at highly advanced levels for science and math). The homework load can be overwhelming at times but there is a terrific support network to ensure that students stay on track. Our son has made great friends and loves his teachers. The academics are top notch. For the second consecutive year, The Science Academy was the number one school in the state of California with the highest scores among grades 6 through 8 in English, math and the English and math combination. For kids who love math and science and are up for the challenge, this is one of the best school options in LA.

Looking back, my only regret is that we didn't find the school sooner. Today, I'm the proud parent of two Oakwood alumni, one attending the University of Southern California and the other at the University of Redlands, as well as an incoming seventh grader. Watching our older children leave Oakwood so well prepared for college has given us tremendous confidence in the education they received. What always stood out to me was that Oakwood never asked our kids to choose between academics, athletics, or the arts. They were challenged in the classroom while also having every opportunity to pursue the things they loved. Both of our older children played varsity sports throughout high school, baseball, soccer, and softball, while also thriving academically. Perhaps the best example of Oakwood's philosophy is our daughter, who is now pursuing degrees in both Neuroscience and Cinematic Arts at USC. To me, that's exactly what an Oakwood education represents: students who are encouraged to explore multiple passions rather than being placed into a single lane. Beyond the academics, Oakwood is a community that genuinely knows and cares about its students. Our children were supported, challenged, and encouraged to become confident, curious young adults. If you're looking for a school that prepares students not only for college but for life, I can't recommend Oakwood highly enough.
