But as a Black family, our list was more layered with the awakening that the world witnessed. The pandemic added additional complexity to our anxiety, but Oakwood has been a dream come true for our family in alleviating all worries we had. The community of families is kind and down-to-earth. The teachers are responsive and committed. This school is well-run and culturally in tune, and everyone goes above and beyond. My son needed to be picked up one day early from school and was unhappy about leaving friends mid-morning. That evening, I got a call from his teacher offering to come to our house (pretty far away) to bring him his items to ensure he was okay (Completely Unnecessary, but the offer meant the world and demonstrated how much she cared.) Honestly, the only complaint is that our son wants to stay at school way too long and has asked us to "fall back." This week, the only tears were when we picked him up ON TIME instead of allowing him to go to after-care! His maturity and growth spurt are selfishly bittersweet, but I am proud to have a front-row seat in watching his love of learning cemented on these grounds. It is a magical, empowering place that has already been the fabric of countless unforgettable memories.

Yes it is expensive, but 1 out of 4 kids is on partial or full financial aid and that was very important to us, because we can afford it, but we did not want our daughter going to a "rich kid" school. And this school really values diveristy, including socioeconomic diversity. It is technically Episcopal but 22% of the student population is Jewish and the kids learn about and celebrate all kinds of different holidays including Diwali. We of course worry about gun violence and the campus is a COMPOUND. You cannot get onto campus without being checked out by security, and there is a former Marine on campus at all times with his adorable German Shepard, Otto - who is GREAT with the kids but I imagine also trained to attack and take down anyone threatening. One of the things I like the best is there are so many after school activities on campus I don't have to drive my daughter anywhere else, I just pick her up a bit later on days she has activities like Toy Design, Junior Shark Tank, Tennis, Mindfulness, and Improv. And while we do not use the bus system yet, my understanding is that Campbell Hall has the widest and most extensive bus system of any of the private schools in LA. Lastly, the parents CARE and are really involved and the school really welcomes their involvement. And the kids are taught values and kindness is a major priority along with education. Again, I recognize the expense is daunting and it's very hard to get into, but we applied and got into Laurence, Oakwood, Hollywood Schoolhouse etc, and are extremely happy (and so is our daughter) that she got into CH. She is absolutely thriving.

Yesterday, my husband and I were lucky enough to attend their prospective parent open house and to say I was impressed would be an understatement. The morning began by having us sit in on their twice weekly school assembly (called "Community"). It hit to the heart of what it means to be in a community! It was inspiring. Completely led by the students themselves, yesterday's assembly was entirely run by the second graders! What a joy! It really set the stage for what proved to be a very enjoyable morning. Everyone we met made us feel instantly at home...the staff, the parents, the security team who helped us find a parking spot and especially the two 6th graders who gave my husband and I our own special "VIP" tour! Their engagement and passion for sharing their experiences truly warmed our hearts. We appreciated hearing from so many staff members who are clearly committed to providing the most nurturing educational experience for the students. We know the students at Wesley are in very capable hands.

My daughter was able to participate in a yoga class and music class on a regular basis. Students are also able to participate in My Gym program for a smaller fee. My daughter's teacher, Miss Ingrid, was amazing as well! Kids usually engage in different crafts and projects, which they are able to take home with them at the end of the week. They get to see and learn about different animals (another program that the preschool participates in). I very highly recommend this preschool. Not related, but I really think that it would make the look and feel of the school the little better, is that they need to update their furniture and paint some of the areas inside the school. It's looks a bit it worn out and needs some care. However, don't let the look of the school to dissuade you from sending your child there. Amazing program and caring teachers!

The teachers at Riverside are AMAZING. They are passionate, smart, and kind and there is very little turnover - all the teachers seem to want to come here and never leave. At every school I'm sure there are some good and some bad, but most of the teachers I've had experience with at Riverside are devoted to their students and love their jobs. From an educator's perspective, Ms. Haynes is extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of education and knows what needs to be done to make this school the best that it can be - including coming up with a plan to increase test scores without "teaching to the test". This happens to be important to me (higher test scores while still making learning fun,) so it thrills me to see that she is very involved and enthusiastic about Riverside's potential. From a parent's perspective, Ms. Haynes is down to earth, very friendly and approachable, and can relate to having elementary school aged children. I think she is a great leader and will start to really help take this school from a school the parents appreciate into a 10/10 powerhouse. There are several programs I personally love about Riverside including the awesome drama program; the learning garden with all the flowers, veggies, and chickens; the large library; the new computer lab; the annual Science Fair and Art Night and Literacy Night; and more. I also appreciate that I can be involved with the school through Governance council and all the committees the school has for parents to join if they want. And as a personal plus - I've met many incredible, dedicated parents through this school, some of whom are now my best friends. Last year (2016-17) the school went through a lot of changes and I'm not gonna lie - it was discouraging at the time. But, I'm so glad we stuck through it! I really think Riverside is a special neighborhood school with tons of potential to just keep getting better.
