The homework load can be overwhelming at times but there is a terrific support network to ensure that students stay on track. Our son has made great friends and loves his teachers. The academics are top notch. For the second consecutive year, The Science Academy was the number one school in the state of California with the highest scores among grades 6 through 8 in English, math and the English and math combination. For kids who love math and science and are up for the challenge, this is one of the best school options in LA.

They were always happy to talk and answer questions and concerns. The administration was also approachable. This school had a lot of great teachers that really liked working with the students. They didn't have to say it because it showed in their actions. My son especially liked his English teacher. I forgot her name. But, she provided a variety of novels and interesting literature for him to read. One of the books was about the historical culture of the United States. I was so happy when my other son went to the neighboring school. However, it turned out to be too big and busy, and I did not feel like they were personally invested in my son. I felt like the teachers were bullied into giving students grades that they did not earn, and students were encouraged to miss school anytime they wanted and claim that it was for "mental health" reasons. In the end, it turned out to be a blessing that my younger son had to go to his home school, East Valley High. The students have a sense of security and belonging at East Valley.

You feel it the minute you walk on campus. The principal sets such a positive tone, and it trickles down through every part of the school. Teachers and staff know every child by name, and that kind of connection really sets Laurel Hall apart. Class sizes are small, which means our child gets personalized attention and are really seen not just another face in the crowd. It offers that classic, traditional school experience you might expect in a small town, but it's right here in the heart of the Valley. Yes, it's a private school and tuition isn't nothing- but compared to others in LA, it's very reasonable for what you get. We also weren't sure how we'd feel about the church affiliation going in, but honestly, it's light and sweet. When students feel more confused, stressed, and ignored after interacting with administration, that's a massive failure of leadership. The environment is unpleasant, morale is low, and basic standards of professionalism seem optional. Instead of focusing on student success, the administration seems wrapped up in its own strange priorities. It's hard to learn in a place where students don't feel respected or taken seriously. If you care about education, structure, or basic competence, I'd strongly recommend looking literally anywhere else.

However, there has been some increase in the number of reported "almost incidents" outside the school. These "almost incidents" imply some safety concerns - e.g. almost had a child interact with a suspicious character, almost had a suspicious person pick-up a child...almost this, almost that. Lately, it seems to happen once a week. Which is why the police presence in the area helps a lot. Everywhere you go, there will always be suspicious and crazy people. Maybe the school lets parents know about "everything" for transparency and out of an abundance of caution. I still love this school and would recommend it to everyone. Reed produces responsible students. Great school, awesome parent/ teacher community. Go Wolves!

But as a Black family, our list was more layered with the awakening that the world witnessed. The pandemic added additional complexity to our anxiety, but Oakwood has been a dream come true for our family in alleviating all worries we had. The community of families is kind and down-to-earth. The teachers are responsive and committed. This school is well-run and culturally in tune, and everyone goes above and beyond. My son needed to be picked up one day early from school and was unhappy about leaving friends mid-morning. That evening, I got a call from his teacher offering to come to our house (pretty far away) to bring him his items to ensure he was okay (Completely Unnecessary, but the offer meant the world and demonstrated how much she cared.) Honestly, the only complaint is that our son wants to stay at school way too long and has asked us to "fall back." This week, the only tears were when we picked him up ON TIME instead of allowing him to go to after-care! His maturity and growth spurt are selfishly bittersweet, but I am proud to have a front-row seat in watching his love of learning cemented on these grounds. It is a magical, empowering place that has already been the fabric of countless unforgettable memories.

Campbell Hall is an INCREDIBLE school. I am so grateful my daughter got in (for Kindergarten, now…read moreshe's in 2nd grade). Yes it is expensive, but 1 out of 4 kids is on partial or full financial aid and that was very important to us, because we can afford it, but we did not want our daughter going to a "rich kid" school. And this school really values diveristy, including socioeconomic diversity. It is technically Episcopal but 22% of the student population is Jewish and the kids learn about and celebrate all kinds of different holidays including Diwali. We of course worry about gun violence and the campus is a COMPOUND. You cannot get onto campus without being checked out by security, and there is a former Marine on campus at all times with his adorable German Shepard, Otto - who is GREAT with the kids but I imagine also trained to attack and take down anyone threatening. One of the things I like the best is there are so many after school activities on campus I don't have to drive my daughter anywhere else, I just pick her up a bit later on days she has activities like Toy Design, Junior Shark Tank, Tennis, Mindfulness, and Improv. And while we do not use the bus system yet, my understanding is that Campbell Hall has the widest and most extensive bus system of any of the private schools in LA. Lastly, the parents CARE and are really involved and the school really welcomes their involvement. And the kids are taught values and kindness is a major priority along with education. Again, I recognize the expense is daunting and it's very hard to get into, but we applied and got into Laurence, Oakwood, Hollywood Schoolhouse etc, and are extremely happy (and so is our daughter) that she got into CH. She is absolutely thriving.
