Still love Reed - the best teachers! The Principal changed this school year. We sure miss Ms. Gamba! But the community of teachers, who are all very qualified professionals, deserve the highest praises. The IHP program rocks. However, there has been some increase in the number of reported "almost incidents" outside the school. These "almost incidents" imply some safety concerns - e.g. almost had a child interact with a suspicious character, almost had a suspicious person pick-up a child...almost this, almost that. Lately, it seems to happen once a week. Which is why the police presence in the area helps a lot. Everywhere you go, there will always be suspicious and crazy people. Maybe the school lets parents know about "everything" for transparency and out of an abundance of caution. I still love this school and would recommend it to everyone. The teachers here are wonderful and truly seem to care about the children. Unfortunately, my experience with the office staff and administration was very disappointing. It often felt like the teachers had little say and were expected to simply follow direction from the office, even when concerns were raised. What concerned me most was the lack of communication surrounding emergency situations. There was little to no follow-up with parents, and it felt like the school tried to minimize or quietly move past serious incidents instead of being transparent. Because of those experiences, I personally would not feel comfortable bringing my child back here. read more

When everyone writes a review you all need to mention High school or Middle school,. Because all reviews are mixed. I can tell about middle school , that they need to be very attentive and responsible of what is happening inside of all rooms and outside as well. The get payed only only for teaching but for supervising them. During lunch or in the classrooms. An incident happened few weeks ago and 1 year ago, non of them get resolved. Students who doesn't follow rules and are respectful or bullies need be held accountable for their actions. I would they they need to be suspended from the school if not charged their actions. THIS SCHOOL DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THE WELL BEING OF YOUR CHILD!!! First and foremost this school went downhill and got ghetto . Walter reed heavily promotes their school at Rio vista but they lie about everything enrolling your child and having first dips on electives which doesn't happen my child didn't get any electives they choose or got a locker until the first week of school and they promote that they will be ready for 6th grade and they don't. Just money grab for funding. Violence and fights happen everyday the principal calls reporting an "incident" that occurs even the parents have road rage during drop offs which tells a lot about the environment of the school my child started at Walter reed he reported me of an incident that another student slammed his head on the desk and blacked out there was a sub who didn't see (negligence happens here) and no student reported this incident. I emailed the teacher , the principal , and dean NUMEROUS TIMES ASKINg for answers they didn't respond or respond 1 week late. This incident happened on 2-26. There was only a safety plan that was conducted and never really took action my child told me the dean never checked on him and bullying kept occurring On 2 3/21 the dean finally tells me no one saw anything and that was final. I kept pushing for answers until I finally got a meeting with the principal Debois and dean Mr Salazar on 4/8 after 2 months and he turned it on me saying I didn't reach out enough and kept pressuring to bring him back to school . During the meeting the dean Mr Salazar said he doesn't remember me at all or the incident even tho he conducted a safety plan and I kept emailing him. This is one of the most HORRENDOUS middle schools EVER, My son and my daughter went to this school and every day they come home worrying they might not the next day and now even if there is a threat or a shooter(there has been both while they were going) they are BANNING PHONES so what should I do if my child needs to text me like the time when there were DRUGS on campus and kids were hospitalized, please do your kids a favor and do not send them to this middle school read more

I was threatened and now I have anxiety and I get afraid everytime I go out. Some nice people but overall mean people.

This school is on a busy street surrounded by freeway and under the new Burbank airport jet super highway in the edge of studio city. Cars are allowed to park overnight on Sara leading to a lot of undesirable people lurking about. CalTrans found a heroin and meth encampment across the street that took months to get cleaned up. There is tons of graffiti around the surrounding freeway walls that also takes months to get cleaned up. Air quality in this location is generally moderate so combined with the continuous jet fuel and the freeway, I would never let a child go to a school in such a terrible location. This schools air and the surfaces should be tested by the EPA for the children's health. I went to a competition on this campus as an observerand they had very unhealthy food and the classrooms were dirty. The auditorium is very nice. The children seemed nice in the competition but those were high performing kids from other sc. The kids that actually go to this school are terribly trained and leave trash all over the neighborhood and trample over yard. **update 8/26/2020 we've got what I assume is a brand new heroin and meth encampment across the street again. The principal and on site officer seem oblivious to the growing pile of camping gear, furniture, human and drug waste accumulating based on my multiple conversations with LAPD wherein they told me I should call the principal and on-site school police that seems to be totally ignorant to the growing issues surrounding the campus where kids walk to and from campus every day through human and drug waste. I believe you are looking at an extreme biohazard in the middle of a pandemic for the kids and based on what I am seeing. I wouldn't trust that the school is safe enough or clean enough to reopen without more than the standard once annual LAUSD deep cleaning. I have also seen a film shoot allowed inside in the middle of the lockdown which makes no sense to me. The surrounding allowed overnight parking also attracts a lot of people sleeping in vehicles. The parent teacher association really needs to wake up before something terrible happens here between the loitering, the extreme amounts of drugs, the piles of trash, increasing bugs and vector issues and the inane lack of proactiveness here. read more

Coming from an eighth grader in ESA, I really don't know why everyones being so critical of Walter Reed. I think it's a good school. They have an extraordinary music department ideal for any student(s) looking for a creative outlet or passion and most of the teachers are pretty nice (especially the humanities ones.). Sometimes you get bad teachers or get bullied but its not like you can avoid that. Overall, I think it's a good school with a very welcoming and devoted staff. read more

I called inquiring about employment permit, I was initially told there was a possibility for my child to get enrolled through that permit, that I might just have to wait until August 19th but it wasn't impossible . The lady over the phone even took down my info and Childs name(she sounded kind). As it was getting closer to the end of the summer I went in to see if I could do anything else to accelerate the process of being on a "waiting list". I say it like that because when I went in the lady at the main office told me "In 14 years that I've been here, I have never heard of such a thing" Me a little upset already said "okkkaayy... Sorry I am very confused, because I was told I'd be put on a waiting list" she reacted "mmmm I am not sure maybe the attendance office has such a thing, let me ask the vice-principle". Smh, that was probably an even worst idea. She explained that there was a "list" however (her own words) "the chances of you getting in are zero to nothing, if I were you I'd look to enroll in another school". Gosh those words got me upset! What a stinky attitude the whole time we were there it seem that all we were was a pest or an inconvenience to them. After that demeanor I am glad I did not enroll my child there. If that's the behavior of a "superior" what can I expect from the rest of the staff?! Even though my child didn't attend this school my initial experience was bad! read more

My daughter has been attending Walter Reed for three years. It has been a lovely school and a very safe school. The kids that go there seem to be good kids and respectable. I have witnessed that the staff is warm and inviting. This school seems like it really cares about the well being of the children. The front door remains locked! One can only enter, after the guy at the desk, at the door, allows you in. He can see you, through the glass in the schools front door. I like this safety feature. I would also like to say that Mr. Segura, the Assistant Principal is a very warm person. A delight to speak with. He is always inviting and positive, and carries great energy. On the occasions that I have had to speak with him regarding any matter, he has always been pleasant, kind, listened and courteous. He is easy to engage with and he seems to really care about the children. He looks out for them, appears very hands on and my daughter tells me that he is always around during lunch time, watching, observing, and making himself available to the students, should they need anything. She said he is friendly and warm towards them. Should anything unsavory happen at Walter Reed, among the students, etc., I am sure Mr. Segura would get to it right away. I find him to be, a compassionate, balanced, respectful, personable and funny person. He is great to converse with. My daughter likes him too! He is aware of what's going on at the school's campus, during lunch and very observant of the kids. I give Mr. Segura 5 stars! read more

Was there for the Ren Faire, it's a nice campus and the people were very nice.

I am a graduate from this school and frankly I have nothing bad to say about it. The staff is nice, the kids are welcoming, and there educational system is great! I was in the environmental honors academy and the work load was a decent amount and the teachers were full of character and were welcoming. Mr. Ramos is the best history teacher and makes learning really fun yet challenging, I highly recommend his class. Overall, WRMS is a very good school to enroll your kids in. read more

This school is run well and teachers have high academic standards for their students. My daughter enjoys the experience of attending here and that is important. The parents we've met are fun and down to earth. The campus looks good for its age, 80, and funding. The stringent dress code helps students take school seriously and they look classy on campus like a private school. If I could change one thing I would ask they unlock the front door since there is a guard right inside. read more

I agree with the other comment, this school has lost an excellent teacher in Mr.Ing!! Wow, what a concept to have a teacher that got kids interested in learning History!!!! School has been pretty good but the admin. side needs work. The counselor is rude and unapproachable and scares the students, quite the opposite of what a counselor should be! That should fall under the Dean's definition!! Also, the music dept. has become all about show choir...there is more to that great program than just the "show choir"! Walter Reed Middle School used to be a 4 to 5 star school which was heavily supported by the Studio City community. Having had the experience of having one of my kids go through the "Walter Reed experience" I reluctantly started writing this review with only 2 stars checked. That was my initial reaction when I was asked to write a review about Walter Reed Junior High. And it is now the end of Summer... if I would have been asked to write this review 2 months ago, right at the end of the school year, I definitely would have kept it at 2 stars. Having had some time to cool down, however, I added a third star because, even though there are so many Walter Reed employees and faculty members who have a terrible attitude and could care less (thank God for tenure, huh), they still have a handful of teachers, security team members and even regular staffers who still seem to care about the school, their mission and even the kids. If your child is going to Walter Reed, my best advice is to stay as involved as you can and communicate with your kid's teachers directly and often. That way you can intervene right away if you see things go into a direction you don't approve of. Best of luck! read more

And there I go again driving on Colfax Avenue looking on my left hand side and remembering how much fun it was when I was in the seventh eighth and ninth grade at Walter Reed Junior high school back in the day. those were the good old days where your parents drop you off in front of the school and you meet your buddies for about 10 to 15 minutes before School started.I had a great time at the school Mr. Hensley was a total punk, he used to manhandle the boys and I was kind away and threaten them verbally.but that was Mr. Hensley, if you were cool to him he was cool to you gosh I don't ever remember him smiling LOL. Now Mr. Saponzi,I believe that's how you spell his last name he was a great gym teacher everybody wanted to be in his class. Going back to other teachers Mrs. Blueth was absolutely amazing, there was one teacher/counselor that I will never forget and his name was Mr. McKibben, back in the early early 80s with parents permission he would beat you with a paddle if you acted inappropriate. I never got the paddle because my parents said no one ever hits my child and if you ever do they will take that paddle and beat him up ha ha Ha. But he loves smack in those boys in the ass let me tell you. There were fights here and there couple of small gangs but nothing like today's gangs!!! Everybody had a crush on everybody. read more
