Beef quesadillas
Goodness I.

Placed a curbside order on a Sunday evening and when I arrived at the pick up spot and called the restaurant, I was told that the worker was too busy to bring it out and that I needed to come in. When I came inside and waited a bit, I finally was able to pick up the order, but the drinks weren't ready. Waited some more for that, and then was able to get the food and go home. Once actually eating the food, we were all please with what we got. Food was still warm when we picked it up and it was delicious. Despite the waiting that was involved, I'd still go back:)

Pollo Con Mole Poblano

We've visited Fernando's a few times now and have found our experience has been good and consistent as we've tried different drinks and dishes. The servers have always been friendly and attentive as well. They will start you off with chips and three different types of salsas. It gives a nice variety of flavors depending on your preference for heat and taste. Their Chile Relleno (aka: called Hector) is delicious. It was the right balance of breading and the ranchera sauce added to the flavor of the dish. What was a bit of a surprise was the side of vegetables the dish came with - it was a great medley of zucchini, squash, cauliflower, etc. It was a nice addition to the typical refried beans and rice. I had enough to eat for dinner and left half of everything to enjoy the next day for lunch. My husband has tried their Pollo Con Mole Poblano. The mole sauce had great flavor and the chicken was really tender. At our last visit last week, I went with the Mario choosing chicken filling with the sour cream sauce. It was so flavorful I was having a hard time holding back and not eating it all so I'd have lunch for the next day (the portion again was generous). My husband ordered the Valentino which had the same chicken enchilada with sour cream sauce as in mine and also really enjoyed the flavor. His dish also included a cheese enchilada, and a beef taco. He found all three of the items to be delicious and had no problem finishing it all!

....... CRITIC'S REVIEW ...... A hidden gem!!! GO-GO-GO!!! Awesome on everything!! Wow, am I impressed and can't wait to come back!! Atmosphere: Very impressive initial impression. Up scale with black tables and chairs. Soft elegant music (not Mexican) gives an overall very nice and relaxing appeal!! Staff is super professional and accommodating - special requests are welcome. MY KIND OF PLACE!! Frozen Strawberry Margarita: Wow!! One of the best I've ever had. Not too sweet, balanced, generous pour and exceptionally tasty!! GET ONE (or 3)!! 3 Salsas: Tomato (red): Really nice, mild tomato flavor, soft heat and great flavors. Puréed and delicious. Score 8 out of 10. Avocado (light green): Not what I expected. Soupy purée and hard to distinguish any avocado flavor. Very, very bland with no detectable flavor profile or spices. Score 0 out of 10. (Spit pea soup has more going on!) Cilantro (dark green): Hummm - actually a good surprise!! Never had anything like it - and it's good! Mild heat and very flavorful. A definite winner! Score 9 out of 10. Fajitas: Moist - not dry!! Generous grilled onions but not many peppers. 75% onion. Tortillas are great! Obviously made in-house. Chicken fajitas - traditionally seasoned, good flavor profile and disguising flavor profile. Not over stated, chicken flavor still comes through. Beef fajitas - Excellent!! Great seasoning but subtle. The beef quality comes through. Moist and perfectly cooked. One of my new favorites!!! (Really good!) I'll be back! Juacamole: Beautiful but a bit hot (7 out of 10). Lingering in the back of your mouth - spicy! But delicious otherwise. A bit to hot for me, but do nice I added it to my fajitas. Enchiladas : Sour Cream Chicken - excellent and perfect sauce. A bit on the small size - actually skimpy. Like a taquito size. Chicken is moist and beautifully seasoned. A definite come back for item. Flavor Score 10 out of 10... portion is a 4 out of 10. (They should double the meat and charge $2 more - definitely worth it!!) Beef - Very good. Meat is moist and not greasy. One of the few places with a chili con carne brown sauce. Very delicious and a unique spin on the flavor profile - in a great way! Gourmet level goodness. I'll be back. Score is 10 out of 10. Chicken Nachos: I didn't have them but they looked awesome. Got photo from friends at next table. Overall: A definite go place! Better than anything in the Richardson-Plano area... or Dallas for that matter. How did D Magazine miss this place!!!! (...Their food critics are asleep!!) Pass the word!! Eat here!! Score 10 out of 10!!

The food is ok, service was ok, but in terms of environment it's just very plain. A Mexican restaurant, in my opinion, should bring forth a lot of the beautiful history of Mexican culture. But mainly, the biggest problem is the price point of a lot of these items. For the price, there should be a lot more food. Everything generally lacks any type of spice. Honestly for expensive as it is, it's just lacking a lot. Additionally, it took a while before we could be seated, despite no line and staff chattering and staring at us.

I went with a small group for lunch and we sat on the patio. All but one of us ordered from the lunch menu and the majority of us were disappointed with our food. This place os too expensive to be providing such poor quality food. My brisket tacos were pretty good, but everyone else was very sad about their food- especially my friend that ordered the lunch burritos. It was just chicken wrapped in a tortilla. Service was slow but friendly, my main concern was with the quality of food. I will not be back. Good union or literally anywhere else in cityline is a better option.

Quesadilla

Service was very good for starters. The food itself is decent and the drinks were strong. I am yet again blown away at how in the world a place with $20-$30 plates can have some of the worst queso in Richardson. This is not real cheese... there is no way it is. Flavorless and gel like consistency. How hard is it to just make real cheese queso? If you can't tell by now, queso is a make it break for a restaurant for me. Other than the queso it was decent food but I feel the prices are a little too high here.

Treated a friend for a birthday brunch at Fernando's. Plenty of seating space so we managed to snag a table early (they are definitely busy during evening hours). Our server was friendly and accommodating throughout our dining visit and then he recommended this delicious dessert. What a great way to finish off our meal!

Let me start by saying the service was great!!!. The staff was very nice and helpful. I read some of the other reviews and it is definitely NOT the Best place in Richardson or Plano. There is a reason D magazine has not been to this restaurant. The tortillas are NOT home made. I asked the waiter and he said they have never had homemade tortillas. Taco Cabana has better tortillas than this place. I am ranting here but the other reviews are very misleading. For appetizer we had the queso with brisket. The queso tasted and looked like velveeta cheese. My mother in law makes better queso in her crockpot. I had the Valentino. It was ok. My wife had the Pachuga de Pollo. She liked the vegetables the best. I was anticipating this place being a lot better. It's in a great location. The place looks nice. I think they are trying to be too upscale. Go back to the basics. My white father in law said it best. It's so sad when you go to a white Mexican restaurant.

The margarita here is awesome! No margarita mix - the real deal!

Lemme just start off by saying: the service here is amazing. We were so welcomed here and treated with such kindness. THAT ALONE would lead me to return. The margaritas here are to die for! They are not stingy with the tequila and don't use margarita mix in their classic marg. It was delicious! 10/10. We ordered the fajita nachos and flautitas. The fajita nachos are maxing with beef! The meat was so tender! The flautitas were crunchy and yummy. We had so much fun at Fernando's, and will return soon!

The margarita's were good but not as good as other margarita's I've had. The refried beans weren't good and their coloring was off. It was strange. The rice and fajita chicken inside of the chimichanga were good. The fried tortilla wasn't that great but it may have been the sauce that was on it. I should've had them hold it to the size. The menu was way overpriced. I would've preferred to eat at one of those small hole in the wall Mexican joints over this one.

Brisket Tacos

Food: 5 / Service: 5 / Ambiance: 5 I've eaten at Fernando's a number of times and they never disappoint. They do have a lunch menu and if you order select entrees from the lunch menu, your drink (soda, tea) is included. This visit I had brisket tacos, which were really filled, were wonderful, their brisket is some of the best. The rice and beans are also great. My daughter had tamale and cheese enchilada, a staple of Tex-Mex, and theirs never lets you down. I've had flautas and beef and chicken fajita tacos that just amazing. Fernando's is a clear front runner for me and I go whenever I have a chance. They are moderately priced, so not cheap, unless you stop by for lunch, which is a bargain in my opinion. Also, their Coke may be better than McDonalds!

Serrano Style Fajitas

A really lively place! The location is perfect - it's next to other eateries and the Cityline courtyard that hosts weekend concert at night. It is always busy here and the atmosphere is great! It seems like it's a great place for group get together, family gathering, and I intimate date night. The food is great! We had the fajita special and that came with tons of sides and fixings. The shrimp cocktail is so addictive. We were lucky to get a booth seat and enjoy the indoor. They also have lots of outdoor seating that's great for enjoying the weather and the music on those special nights. I think service was just fine - the waitress was available when we need her and came to check in at the right time midway. Some of the servers are so talented carrying those heavy tray over their head without losing balance - that's skills!! I love the ambiance and would come back to try the other dishes like their regional specials.

All 3 good and none are spicy could be a tad spicier but still good

Ask the Community - Fernando's Mexican Cuisine

Are they good about refilling salsa?

Yes, they are! We rarely need a refill though because they start you off right away with 4 different salsas. I love them all💛

Are the chips gluten free?

Yes, they are corn.

The bartender was attentive, kind, and professional. The atmosphere felt welcoming, and you can tell they have loyal regulars, which always speaks well of a restaurant. The staff overall seemed consistent and friendly. Now for the food. I ordered the queso to start. The flavor was good, but it wasn't hot -- more lukewarm than fresh-out-the-kitchen warm. For my entrée, I had the skirt steak with beans, pico de gallo, enchilada, and rice. The flavors were solid, but again, the plate came out lukewarm. For a Tex-Mex spot, temperature really matters. I don't need it piping hot, but I do expect my food to feel freshly made and properly heated when it arrives. That was my only disappointment. I've ordered carryout before without issue, and because the service and vibe are strong, I will definitely be back to give it another try. I just hope next time the food comes out hot and fresh. Overall: great service, good flavors, strong local energy -- just room for improvement on food temperature.

Over the past year, I've experienced stomach issues after eating here, which had never happened to me before under the previous ownership. I'm not sure if it's a change in ingredients, preparation methods, or sourcing, but something is clearly different. It's disappointing because this used to be a go-to spot. Today was her birthday (one of those that come every 10 years) and she wanted to go to Papasitos. I made reservations, checked the box that we were celebrating a BD. We arrived ahead of our reservation and had a little wait for a table. No problem. The young lady from the check in seated us and ask if we were celebrating anything. I told her that it was my wife's birthday, but she didn't want the full blown hooten hollering sombrero celebration. We waited 8-10 minutes before a server came to our table. He immediately apologized for the wait and said that he was helping out another waiter that was supposed to have our table. He took our drink order and soon returned with our drinks. To my surprise, he proceeded to take our food order. I thought he was temporarily helping out until the other server could catch up and take over. That wasn't the case. Ok, No problem so far. I'm giving 2 stars because the food came out super fast and hot and delicious. Then our server delivers hot flour tortillas.., all 3 of them. After each eating one taco, we were ready for another batch. Now this is where it started to go downhill. Several minutes go by and I could not grab his attention. I literally had to waive my hand in the air to flag him down across the restaurant. He finally looked my direction and soon delivered more tortillas. That was the last we saw of him. No checking on our table, no refills on our drinks, no nothing. After we finished our meal, we waited another 25 minutes to try to get his attention to close out our meal. He would never look our way. He was like a horse with blinders. Honestly, I think he forgot that he was our server OR MAYBE he saw us as 2 people and his gratuity was going to be smaller compared to the larger tables. Finally, I flagged down another server from another table and ask if he could close us out. He asked if we had a paper receipt, which we had not. He closed us out on his iPad. I didn't even get the chance to order my wife a dessert to celebrate the occasion. No bueno! Let's just say the service was abysmal and absolutely unacceptable. My man went MIA. It is questionable whether I will return to this establishment.
