Brekkie sandwich (weirdly only half my sandwich had bacon)
    Audrey F.

Looked like a cool spot for breakfast, brunch, and lunch and I appreciated that they had outdoor seating so that it's dog friendly. Food is mostly in the high teens and they offer breakfast items, soups, salads, sandwiches, and pizzas. They also have coffees and some teas. I tried the brekkie sandwich and was underwhelmed by it. It was supposed to come with bacon, egg, cheese, and sauerkraut, but bacon was only on half of my sandwich. The way the bacon was laid out perfectly in line with where the sandwich was cut made it look like the bacon was purposefully laid out on one half. The sauerkraut left my sandwich soggy so that when I first picked up the sandwich, the bread was already falling apart. The oddest part to me was that the sauerkraut didn't pair with the rest of the sandwich well (wasn't particularly sour, just liquid-y, and some of it like the green onion didn't pair well).

GRASS-FED BEEF BONE BROTH - Rich beef bone broth! Super good!
    Sarah C.

1/8/2026 4 1/2 Stars - 1/2 Star taken off for lack of good customer service. GRASS-FED BEEF BONE BROTH Been a long time since I've last been here! Came here solely to get the grass-fed beef bone broth. Unfortunately most of it spilled in my car on my drive back home. I did try whatever was left of it, heated up and added salt. It was such a clean, beef broth flavor! Best to eat when you're feeling sick, but this was delicious with a salad too. If you can, please bring your own stainless steel mug with a good lid to transfer it, so you don't get spilling accidents like me. Not 100% if they will give you the broth directly to your own mug, but better taking it with you, just in case. SNACKS Nature Nates LLC, Better Than Popcorn! Popped Sorghum - This was sooo good! It tasted like regular popcorn, but more nutty and buttery! Beautiful crunch of the popped sorghum which felt like mini corn popcorn! Can't believe this is healthy! Coconut oil and pink himalayan sea salt! I guess it tastes similar to Lesser Evil Himalayan Pink Salt Popcorn, but with a nuttier, buttery flavor without any real butter! I would get this again! Urban AIP, Rosemary Garlic Paleo Crackers - This had a lovely toasted olive oil cracker flavor. The cracker itself had a good crunch, but not super hard to bite into. Lovely toasted olive oil flavor with flavors of rosemary and garlic. But mostly rosemary forward, little garlic flavor. This was good too! I love the rosemary and garlic flavor was not too much in it. Figure Eight, Air-Dried Beef Biltong, Spiced - This was not super dry like beef jerky. It has a slight moistness to the overall chew and texture. Not tough to chew! You can taste bits of fat in between the air-dried beef as you chew. It had a good amount of saltiness and with peppery flavor and a spicy kick at the end. Very good! RAD Chocolate, Vegan Organic Dark Chocolate Crunch, Made with Reishi + Chaga Crispy Quinoa - Very good, quality dark chocolate! Such a richness in chocolate flavor with that crispy quinoa with each bite! CUSTOMER SERVICE It was okay. They were nice. But they could be a bit friendlier. Also, the bone broth that I ordered came out super late! It took way too long to get the bone broth to-go and they didn't even give a reason or apology for why everything was late. I had to ask them twice if it was ready. FARMERS MARKET Open Every Thursday 11am-3pm PARKING / LOCATION Located in a very run down, small strip mall. There is a large sign at the front with their name on it, but still a good chance you can miss it. The parking lot is medium-sized, but there's not a whole lot of parking spots, ironically. The parking lot always looks full. However, I did not have a hard time finding parking, as there were 2-3 spots available.

What an interesting store and menu selection. I grabbed the grass fed beef chili to try since I already had lunch plans. What I really wanted to grab was the tuna melt and I'll have to come back for that. The menu is very interesting and the store also has snacks and refrigerated foods for sale. Outdoor seating available. Parking lot is on smaller side. Casual. Order at counter and wait for your name to be called. Please come and create your own adventure.

**December 2025: Tuesday Afternoon Visit** I had this bookmarked for quite some time and figured that after completing a doctor's appointment that this would be a nice treat for myself for being a responsible adult. :) On my visit it was a really cold and gloomy day so I figured a hot bowl of chili would be perfect. The parking lot was a moderate size, but I was able to find a spot pretty easily (I imagine on the weekend it might be a different story). Nevertheless, I was very excited to try a new spot. I came around 1pm and there was a short but quite line of guests. I noticed several women who seemed to value a healthy lifestyle and brought their young children. The restaurant is located inside the store which had a pretty good variety of different organic and health related snacks and goods. There was also several large refrigerators of frozen goods to take home. I finally made it to the front of the cashier and picked two items 1) a cup of chili and 2) the breakkie sando (as it came highly recommended). I was given a number and noticed the sign above the cashier that it would be around a 20 minute wait. After looking around I noticed that all the seats were outdoors and since I was dressed to go workout I was freezing and a little bummed that I'd have to sit outside. About 15-20 minutes did pass and my items were brought out. Here are my reactions for each item Noms **Chili ($9): this was a solid chili, but nothing out of the ordinary. **Brekkie Sando ($16): The sauerkraut had a nice crunch and tang, and gave a different dimension for a breakfast sandwich. The bread was nicely toasted, and the ingredients all worked well together, but did it wow me? No, however; if someone brought this to me I would eat it. I know this is a speciality store/restaurant that is geared towards a certain type of clientele. I do feel that there is great care and pride taken for the products, but for me it's hard for me to justify the price-point for a meal that was okay. It's just not for me.

Fermentation Farm is a health food store with two locations - one in Costa Mesa and another one in San Juan Capistrano (River Street Marketplace). They ranked #3 in Yelp's Top 100 US Restaurants in 2022 ( https://www.yelp.com/article/yelps-top-100-us-restaurants-2022 ). [Pro tip]: The market offers 15% OFF all broths, soups, and chilis from the restaurant on Rainy Day Special. [Parking]: Easy and free plaza parking. [Market]: I actually really like their snack section. While they are somewhat expensive, I can tell these snacks are some of the more healthy snacks anyone will find in any stores. They have a Kombucha bar here (13 rotating flavors). Fermented veggies like kraut and kimchi can be found at the refrigerated section. [Amenities]: There are at least a dozen outdoor tables to sit and enjoy meals for customers. [Menu]: For kitchen food, some of top highlights include Bone Broth Soup and Grass Fed Beef Chili. They also have sandwiches (e.g. Wild Line-Caught Tuna Sandwich), all-day breakfast items, tacos, salads, and pizzas. *** Grass-Fed Beef Chili (beef / beef broth / tomato / carrot / celery / onion / chili spice blend - cilantro, scallion, jalapeño - $9 for small + $0.25 for cheese): The cashier recommended adding cheese. The soup was packed with ingredients and it had full of flavors. The soup was a lot more filling than I thought! Beef Bone Broth (no topping - small $6): I should've at least ask to add free toppings because the broth itself tasted fairly bland. *** Overall a solid 4.5-star on broths and bump up to 5-star on great snack selection and friendly service.

    HOT GOLDEN HONEY TEA

First of all, there is plenty of parking at this strip mall. The shop/restaurant is located at the end and is highly visible. The man taking our order at the counter was super helpful, he recommended the French onion soup and I'm glad that he did. It was absolutely delicious with that bread and raw cheese that I dipped into. I also ate the grass-fed brisket taco and wow it had so much flavor in each bite. The hot golden honey tea was perfect on this winter day. I didn't eat the ramen or the tuna melt but I was told by my friends that it was amazing. There's outdoor dining which is very much relaxed and inside, they had food items for purchase. Next time, I'm going to get a loaf of their sourdough bread and maybe check out their taco tuesday deal, $1 off their tacos all day.

Ive heard much about this place so i finally went to try it. Walk inside and youll see a few different areas where they sell some pantry snacks that all look ridiculously healthy, and refrigerated items like eggs, meat, milk, kombucha, and sauerkraut. Head to the back corner for their kombuchas on tap and feel free to sample! I tried the elderberry and it was very tasty and very punchy!! Ordered the tuna melt cuz im a sucker for them. And this one... is the BEST. The crunchy, fresh sauerkraut was such a nice twist, and the bread was toasted so well it didnt get soggy even with the tuna filling. Im in love!! The service was fantastic and everyone was sO NICE. My order got lost so they comped the sandwich for me. Theres seating outside by the accompanying parking lot. Ill be back so soon!!!

    Grilled cheese with garlic sauerkraut

First time at Fermentation Farm! I've been wanting to try this spot for a while, especially since it's right next to my chiropractor (shoutout to Dr. Derek!). Little did I know it's actually his wife's restaurant! When I asked if he's ever eaten there, he said he eats there every day and told us that it's his wife's spot, so of course we had to go right after my appointment. I got the tuna melt and it was delicious. Super toasty and packed with tuna. Highly recommend. Martin got the sauerkraut grilled cheese with garlic sauerkraut and loved it. We also shared the beet salad and it was so good! The goat cheese was fluffy and flavorful, the beets were fresh and sweet, and the vinaigrette tied it all together perfectly. I also had the matcha latte which was legit. Real matcha, not sweet at all, just how I like it. Loved the outdoor seating too. Perfect spot to relax, enjoy the view, and people/car watch. Service was awesome! The two girls at the counter were super friendly and helpful, especially since it was our first time. They even have a little market with all these farm fresh ingredients and some of their menu items like sauerkraut and kimchi that you can take home! Definitely coming back to try their beef dip, chili, and breakfast items. Pretty sure this is our new go-to after all my appointments!

Really love this place! They are not really a lot of places that focus on the quality and health of foods by including fermentation as a part of the equation when formulating the menu. For what the food is, which is really good, the price is not extravagantly high, and the quality of all the ingredients are homemade. If you're not used to having sauerkraut or sourdough bread, it may not be your cup of tea, however, if you are looking for foods that are not toxic to your body, and that will leave you feeling clean and satisfied, then this is the place for you! One of my personal favorites is the grass fed beef dip and the grilled cheese. Also, they have a really good sourdough chocolate chip cookie! Hope you love it

grass-fed beef chili + vegan black bean chili
    Amanda Z.

I visited fermentation farm on a Monday evening. Parking was easy with the big lot by the building. It wasn't too crowded when we arrived & the staff were very friendly. I ordered the grass-fed beef chili, while my friend got the vegan black bean chili. We enjoyed browsing the products in the small grocery area of the restaurant while waiting for our dishes. I'd love to visit again to try their famous tuna melt & one of their kombucha slushies.

I absolutely love fermentation farm, especially this location! The workers are so kind and knowledgeable about everything. The food always is a 10/10 and it's never TOO crowded but there is always people eating and ordering. I love that i have become a regular at this location and the workers can recognize that. If there is ever a problem they're always willing to fix it without any hesitation. I hope they keep expanding their menu and eventually get a bigger spot.

If I had to list my favorite businesses in Orange County, Fermentation Farm would easily make my top 10. Which is why I'm back with a round two 5-review of this local gem. It literally doesn't get better than healthy locally sourced tasty food. We stopped by during OC Restaurant Week for their $25 meal deal. This meal offering allowed us to snag an entree (chili or a tuna melt), side (bone broth), choice of kombucha, and house-made bread for dessert. I ordered the vegan chili, blueberry bread, chicken bone broth, and the creamsicle kombucha.. all for $25. An absolute steal, imo. I adore their weekly outdoor farmers market. You can easily go broke browsing their many dried fruits, fresh fruit, veggies, and nuts. I may have irresponsibly spent $30 on flavored nuts and fruit during my most recent visit. Forever and always a fave. Highly recommend checking out this biz on your next outing.

Fermented is such a refreshing find in Costa Mesa. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance sets the tone -- it's relaxed, clean, and has that perfect balance of modern and cozy. You immediately feel like you're somewhere that cares about what they're serving and how they make you feel. The customer service was just as impressive. Everyone was warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely enthusiastic about the food. It didn't feel forced or robotic -- they clearly believe in what they're offering, and it shows. Now for the food -- the absolute star of the show. I ordered the grass-fed, grass-finished beef chili, and it was OUTSTANDING. You could taste the difference in quality immediately. The beef was rich and tender, the seasoning was spot-on (bold but not overwhelming), and the whole dish felt hearty without being heavy. It's the kind of meal that leaves you feeling satisfied, energized, and just better than when you walked in. Fermented is the real deal. If you're serious about clean, delicious food served in a welcoming environment, this spot should be at the top of your list. Can't wait to come back!
