After being rear-ended in a hit and run accident, while stopped at a red light, I had the…read moremisfortune of dealing with this company. They fought me every step of the way and I had to hire an attorney to get them to do what I had paid for them to do, for years, with no claims, whatsoever. I was repeatedly advised that my rates would not be affected, because I had paid extra for accident forgiveness, yet I learned, after the fact that this was entirely untrue. Ultimately, I had to threaten to sue them, to obtain the money from my uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, which wasn't even a tiny drop in the bucket toward my medical costs. As the jury was about to be selected, they finally paid me a pittance, after a protracted fight. I missed 3 full months of work and am still incurring medical expenses associated with this accident, 4 1/2 years later, with no end in sight. By the time my attorney was paid, I received $17,000. As if this wasn't bad enough, they repeatedly raised my rates. I called them annually and they said that everyone's rates had been raised. This was an absolute lie. When I finally switched to The Hartford, I learned that they had not only targeted me, but they had coded the accident in such a way that I couldn't get the lowest rates, until the accident fell off of my record, years later. Unbelievably, I was in another hit and run accident 3 1/2 years later. This time I was insured by The Hartford. No battles, no problems; I couldn't have been treated better. AND, when my renewal arrived, a few months later, my rates had gone down. Avoid this company.

When my mom passed away, my father, who is over 80 years old and had been a Liberty Mutual customer…read moresince the 1970s, notified them to remove her from the policy. For context, he hadn't filed a claim in decades and had a clean driving record. Liberty Mutual notified him that now he was single and, I guess, considered more risky, the entire auto policy was going to increase by $800 per year, above what he and mom were currently paying. Unbelievable and unethical. Needless to say, he switched providers for both home and auto, but it was really the last thing he needed given his recent loss and is a prime example of why customer loyalty is exploited rather than honored. By the way, their Doug and Emu commercials (and all the others) are the worst, and I cringe every time they pop up.
