I was across the street at AAA replacing my license plates, and didn't have the tool needed to remove the old ones. The AAA employee suggested I go across the street to Fellow's. There, Su and his assistant not only took the old plates off for me, but let me leave my car there while I went across the street to exchange them for the new ones. When I returned, they had topped off my fluids, and proceeded to put the new plates on for me, all for no charge. Very nice, helpful "fellows"! read more

I took my car here for a failed smog test. They told me that I needed $2200 worth of repairs. I took it elsewhere and they diagnosed the problem which was not what Bauer's had told me and to fix it I spent $600. The place that fixed my car said that if I had replaced my catalytic converter as Bauer had said that I would be back again because I would fail the next time I had to smog. Unfortunately I can't get my "diagnosis" fee back from Bauer. read more

Have you ever met an honest mechanic??? Come here and they will tell only the truth. Before coming to Bauer's I went to 3 different auto repair/muffler shop and they told me my van had A-Z wrong with it and it will cost me a pair of arms and 2 pair of legs. The new owner, Patrick and his team said the van is in good condition and the smog should past once the catalytic converter is fixed. I need to drive 50-100 miles in order to get the smog checked. Other than that I highly recommend you come here first if you need anything smog related. Honest, humble, hard working. 5 stars! read more

I can't think of any other mechanic I'd take a car to. In the 10+ years I've been to Bauer's Auto Repair, Su has been incredibly responsive, helpful , honest and done great work. I don't think I'd buy a second hand car without checking first that Su's team are trained to service it. Anytime I've been there he has given me great guidance on what's needed now, and what to save $$$ on and leave for future services. Su is the definition of a trustworthy and skilled service provider that deserves all the success and 5-star reviews you read here. Now that with the new management, things have gotten even better. I came in at the last minute in the afternoon before New Years to fix a headlight they tried to save me money by showing me how to do it myself I had them do it and they squeezed me in. I came here to get my car to pass smog and they quoted $175 for a diagnostic on the phone. When I came in the guy told me it would be $250 for the diagnostic - and when I mentioned the previous quote, he said - oh well, then I guess we can give you that price. Gimme a break. They also claimed to have put $20 in gas in in, but there was less gas than I brought it in with and only 10 miles extra on the odometer. I also told them that I wanted no more than $675 in repairs and they went Almost $100 over. All they did was replace the fuel filter and the O2 sensor. This cost almost $800. They also kept my car for 5 days longer than they said they would, which was very inconvenient. If you are able to go somewhere else, I highly recommend it. read more

Patrick and his team at Bauer's is honestly the ONE AND ONLY Mechanic I trust working on any of my cars. He knows exactly what he's doing and how he's doing it. He doesn't go back and forth and bs you on you do and don't need. He's straight to the point and he fixes the problem right the 1st time. I've been going to him for over 10 years and never had 1 issue. Also his prices are MORE THAN REASONABLE. don't waste your time going to another mechanic that's going to make your life miserable and mess up your car. read more

If there were a zero rating, i would have given them that. The manager so it seems .. was VERY condescending and rude (probably because I am a girl) -- but my car broke down, unfortunately right in front of their shop and I thought they would be kind enough to reel it in and fix it -- I was in a desperate situation because it was storming outside. What the manager replied was --you need to call the tow truck to have it reel in here. I thought to myself. WHAT THE EFF. its right in front of your store, dead. Then when he finally realize how close it was, he made sure I accepted any proposal before he would even look at it. Usually people would nicely ask whats wrong? what happened? first. But apparently THIS PLACE IS ONLY OUT TO GET YOUR MONEY... so don't get rip off. I am a noob at car problems... so I am pretty sure I got ripped off already by their 2hr-must-be diagnostic test which totalled to $196.00. Come now, it usually only takes about 30 minutes to find out the situation and roughly less than $100. So.. DONT COME HERE. I must say, Su (the worker) was pretty nice. Everything else, was PATHETIC. I wouldnt expect too much honesty from here. read more

Took my new car here just after I bought it and they told me it was a lemon and I needed a new engine, and that it would cost $5,000. I had just bought the car for about $2,500, to which the mechanic snorted, "Huh. It's not worth that." He hadn't even opened the hood or got inside the vehicle when he made that statement. I left in tears, thinking I had made a huge mistake. They charged $220 for a diagnosis. The only problem I knew about was that it had failed smog. I took it to another shop, who looked at their diagnosis and tried to verify what they had said, but could not find any evidence of this so-called, "leaking head gasket," which was the reason they suggested I put the new engine in? So shady. Turned out the real issue was the catalytic converter. Expensive, yes but less than $700 expensive from an honest shop. I reported these scam artists to the bureau of automotive repair. Avoid this hole at all costs! read more

DO NOT take your car there for a smog test. My son made the mistake because it is directly across from the AAA office. They over charge to begin with. Most Smog station offer $20 off and a free re-test. My son's 1994 BMW failed . When this happened 2 years ago,(at a different station) he was told to drive it on the highway and come back for a free re-test and it passed! That is how a good place operates..they help you. When I called Bauer's, they tried to tell me that I needed a certificate to show that it had been worked on before the re-test. That was LIE number one. They said that I would get a free re-test. After making me wait over an hour they wanted $46.50 for the re-test! Lie number two. When I called them out on their lies. the owner threw an answering machine at me!!! I went to the place I normally go "7 Days a Week Smog" on San Pablo Ave. in Berkeley. They are wonderful. They gave me a free retest and after telling me some things to do to better my chances of passing, the car passed the test. My young son learned a lesson. It cost him $76.70. Please save you money and stay away form this rip-off. read more

Knowledgeable staff and about average prices. I needed to get a smog test done, and I needed to go to a "repair" facility vs. a "test-only" one per the DMV, so I chose Bauer's. My "check engine" light had been going on and off periodically, so I thought there would be a good chance I would not get away with simply a smog test fee. I was right. I did need repair, but I got the sense that they were being pretty honest about the situation. I've owned the car for 12 years, so I'm pretty familiar with it. They patiently explained the problem, and gave me the bad part after replacing it. They suggested the replacement of some other things that looked worn, but they did not force the issue when I said no. After passing the smog test, I went across the street to AAA and got my new registration stickers within 10 minutes. I would use Bauer's again for auto repair. read more

Allen was very nice to work with. I was recommended to Bauer from my mechanic to smog my old Volvo. DMV is always picking on my car every year. Even better they do the new pain in the butt test called Star test which only a handful of places do that test in each county. I made an appointment and he had me in and out in 20 minutes. It was great. My car passed easy. I did over hear him talking to another customer about their repairs while waiting and they told their client what can wait to fix and what was necessary. Sorry if others didn't have the same experience. As for "shady" didn't look like that to me. It is an auto shop for crying out loud not the four seasons. Plus it is on University Ave. I actually question auto shops that are stupid clean and nice. Thumbs up from me. read more

This place is a total rip off. They overcharge their customers. They appear friendly but I guarantee you are be taken advantage of. I knew I had already failed my smog test. I was trying to figure out the problem besides just saying that my catalytic converter was bad. I took the car to these guys just to see if it was true. They charged me $230 just to say that it was the catalytic converter. I asked how much it would cost to fix, the guy told me that the catalytic converter would cost $1,678. I went online and paid $496. I also needed o2 sensors they wanted to charge me $145. I went online and got them for $80 new. This place is a total rip off.......be very aware and do not go here. They will smile at you as they are ripping you off. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this place. My car didn't pass the smog test, and it is a big hassle to get it retested, diagnosed and repaired. I initially went to another business and didn't appreciate their rude customer service. Allen at Bauer was awesome from the start. He arranged for a rental company to pick me up ( it sometimes takes several days to get this done-(I was informed of the same thing at the other diagnostic shop) Allen actually got it all fixed for me in one day so I only had the one day rental. What impressed me the most is that he stays current with the government Consumer Assistant Program that helps defray some of the cost of repairs. it is subject to funding so is not always available. Anyway, Allen took care of all the paperwork and saved me a lot of money. They are super friendly and competent as well. I wouldn't go anywhere else for a smog issue thats for sure. read more
