Friends took me here for my birthday and we had reservations at another place, but they "lost" them? All of us have been here before so we decided why not, and see what happens. The place was incredibly busy, we had about a 20 minute wait but it was worth it! Our server Robert was top notch. Professional and cordial. He Immediately came over with glasses of water, garlic bread, cheese and olive tapas, a house salad, and napkins. Tried the broiled fisherman's combo: shrimp, scallops, fish fillet, mussels, stuffed clams, lobster tail, and a side, I opted for linguini with garlic aioli. Everything was cooked very well and the presentation amazing and beautiful. Now here's something you don't see every day; an actual stuffed clam where the clam is still partially attached to the shell! None of that surimi crap! Finished the meal with a double espresso, shared a tartufo and cheese cake. I don't know if the digestif was complementary, but it was a nice touch. I don't know how the kitchen keeps up with the orders. The waitstaff must put a few miles on their feet a day and a cardio workout carrying the trays overflowing with food. Amazing! Everything in the restaurant is kept neat, clean, and organized. The music is not overwhelming. You can hear each other at the table. When the weather is a little nicer, they have beautiful outdoor seating with views of Long Island sound. It is very romantic, when the sun is setting, you can imagine yourself being somewhere exotic and far away. As the song goes; "Sometimes you don't know what you got till it's gone."

Take Archie's and Ohana- that aren't completely 'OG'- caliber- but, have remained a staple for the last 8-9 years. Now, it's Frida's turn. Since it was my turn to pick a restaurant for an outing to spend some sister time, Frida's low-key feel seemed like a good fit. Located on the southbound(?) lane heading towards the water, Little Frida has a nice light-color charm with a couple of turquoisey outdoor tables, two tables inside and some window high-top seating. The design is more trendy and subdued than the colorful and classic style seen in a lot of a Mexican restaurants. The menu is simple and basic- with burgers added to the mix and no cocktail situation- just conventional and Mexican soft drinks like Jarritos and some agua frescas. Our server Nazaret, brought us a nice helping of thick tortilla chips- the way I like them instead of the flimsy ones that break just by looking at them with Guacamole and Salsa dips. The Guacamole was better tasting than the large tomato chunk salsa in my opinion. Our drinks were plentiful- but between Agua de Jamaica(s) that were ordered and my horchata, they missed on flavors. My Shrimp Tacos were packed real nice with.... diced tomatoes, purple cabbage (yum), onions, etc- with cut up shrimp. Good though. All the other dishes my sisters ordered, seemed ok. We enjoyed the green sauce Nazaret brought us and it wasn't tear-inducing at all- which we all tolerated on each of our dishes. To finish things off, our server brought a shareable slice of a flan from his Abuelita's recipe that had all the right notes of creamy, rich and a wonderful amber-sugar-caramel taste. We all dogged it. Frida is very modest, service is super nice, these folks make their own tortillas- and food is flavorful.

He took the time to explain certain items on the menu when we had questions. The menu had a lot of delicious items, it was hard for me to choose but I ended up getting 3 tacos, some guac & of course churros for dessert! The guac was some of the freshest guac I've had in a while! The portion was pretty large too! I got the chicken, steak & el pastor tacos. They were SOOOOO stuffed. For $12, I was shocked and so satisfied. They also make their tortillas from scratch which made them even more unique and delicious! The green salsa was sooo tasty. Especially on the chicken and steak tacos. The el pastor was cooked perfectly and had pineapples too which balanced the flavor so well. The churros were delicious and came with a Nutella dipping sauce. Deff worth a visit!

The chef comes from the world of high-end NYC dining, and you can feel that experience in every detail of the food. There's a level of creativity, precision, and thoughtfulness here that honestly feels Michelin-worthy. This makes sense, because the restaurant has earned that recognition. Beyond the food, Archie's also has one of the best Scotch and whiskey (bourbon and rye included) selections anywhere in the area. It feels curated by people who genuinely care about food and drink, not just running another restaurant. We eat there often, especially for brunch, which is spectacular and consistently better than it has any right to be for a neighborhood spot on City Island. The best example of the attention to detail was the chopped cheese sandwich special. When it arrived, my first thought was: "How is anyone supposed to eat this giant thing?" But then you take a bite and realize the bread was custom made specifically for the sandwich. Somehow it completely melts in your mouth along with the meat and cheese, making this enormous sandwich unexpectedly delicate and perfectly balanced. It's the kind of detail most restaurants would never even think about. Archie's is a true hidden gem and proof that truly exceptional food can exist in places you wouldn't expect.

There are some dedicated parking spaces that have a three hour limit if dining. Upon arrival, I entered the inside restaurant space for Dakota's on the Grove. It was aesthetically pleasing. I should have sat inside here instead of in their outdoor space which they call The Grove at Dakota's. I was able to choose where I wanted to sit, so I chose a table near this shed where the bartender/waiter was. I noticed they were setting up for the Knicks Game 3 final and there were two large TVs and a projection screen. I overheard the waiter state that the area would be packed for the game tonight. There was also good music playing throughout. They had a large connect four, which would be nice to play. They are family friendly and had high chairs for babies and toddlers. When sitting outside they state that they have to preauthorize your card. Now getting onto the food. I was seated and provided with two menus. I immediately asked for a happy hour menu and then I waited for about 15 minutes, until I followed up with another waiter who brought out the menu for me. For the happy hour menu before I received my food I initially thought the prices were good, but upon receiving my food it was evident that the prices are off in terms of the portion size of the food. I ordered a $5 slider. I thought it would be a decent size. It was incredibly small. For the $5 price they should give at minimum 2 sliders but ideally 3. This would incentivize people to buy more. The slider was the best thing I tasted while there and I would have liked more but I couldn't justify spending another $5 when it was so tiny. The tiny slider appeared to be the portion size for a toddler. I ordered calamari which was $9. I was initially disappointed that there was such a small amount. I was even more disappointed when I tasted them. They tasted very "fishy." They absolutely needed a squeeze of lemon and fresh cracked black pepper to try and balance and mask the taste. I believe the portion size for the fries was also off for $5. The fries came in a teacup. Fries are something that people tend to order to have something to pick at while dining and it would make sense I think to provide more fries for the same price. I also could not justify getting another set of fries in a small teacup for $5. I did not like the taste of the fries. When the sparse calamari, tiny beef slider, and small teacup of fries came out, I realized I would not be full and ordered chicken wings from the happy hour menu. You have to get a minimum of 6. You cannot mix the flavors. They were out of the dockside fire sauce so I went with the garlic parm. These wings did not taste like garlic parm. The garlic parm seemed like an afterthought, which was just sprinkled on the wings at the very end. The chicken itself did not have much flavor. They did not mention providing any dipping sauce. I asked for blue cheese and I had to wait for about ten minutes and then remind another waiter that I was still waiting for my blue cheese. They were out of the mozzarella sticks. Moving onto the drinks. While I get being outside and maybe wanting to serve drinks in plastic to minimize glassware breaking, I did not enjoy being served Pinot Noir in a plastic cup or the white cranberry lemon drop in a plastic cup. Each time I was taken aback that they weren't offered in glassware. I got the $7 Pinot Noir from the happy hour menu. A regular glass of Pinot Noir is $9. I also ordered the white cranberry lemon drop which is priced at $12 and is not included on the happy hour menu. The drink came out in the same sized small plastic cup as the Pinot Noir. I think once again that glassware should be used. When ordering a lemon drop you tend to expect a chilled frosty glass with a sugar rim, and that was not what I received here. I think the sugar rim would have elevated the taste profile of the drink. All in all, I really liked the outdoor area. I would probably only return to get a canned beer in the outside section. I hope they start to carry some sour beer options. I do not see myself trying the food again, with the exception of a burger (since the burger was really good.) I did have an inquiry regarding the pre-authorization charge and the final charge that I saw on my credit card. I called and left a message and the restaurant got back to me quickly, which I really appreciated.

The lemon drop was outstanding, perfectly balanced and one of the best parts of the meal. The calamari was a 10/10: fresh, crispy, and very flavorful. The crab cake was also impressive, with about 99% crab and very little filler. For my entrée, I ordered the salmon. The fish itself was fresh and clearly high quality, but it lacked seasoning and flavor. It was also a little dry for my taste. The glaze was good and had a lot of potential, but there simply wasn't enough of it to bring the dish together. The broccoli rabe was well seasoned, perhaps even slightly over-seasoned, but it was quite bitter. The dish comes with asparagus and I don't eat that so I can't comment on the taste. On a positive note, my daughter thoroughly enjoyed her penne alla vodka. While not every dish was a home run, there were enough highlights to make the meal enjoyable. Combined with the excellent service, I would definitely return and give the restaurant another visit.
