I ordered blueprints online. Got phone communication. They were delivered the same day. Exactly what I needed.

Bicycle Garage

What a wonderful small business right in the heart of Bloomington, Indiana. They were certainly…read morewelcoming to our family as we were preparing to drop off our freshman son at University of Indiana - all the way from California. There are lots of emotions involved in that process and the folks at The Bicycle Garage made it just a bit (well maybe a lot) easier to get ready for The Big Day; i.e., our departure date. But I digress. . . . It is clear by the size of the campus that students need a bike to get from class to class on time. Coming from California, we thought it would be better to get one in Bloomington but had put it off even when we got there due to all of the other things we needed to do. Two days before our departure, we stopped into The Bicycle Garage. We were met with warmth coupled with competency - a perfect mix when you are a mom who has no idea what she is doing when it comes to purchasing a bike and who is generally weepy at the thought of leaving her "baby boy" behind. We were first helped by an IU junior who talked about what a great experience he was having at the university - quashed my nerves about that and he didn't even know! They had a smaller than normal selection of bikes given the parental run on them all week, but he was able to pick the perfect one for my son - the fit, style, and mechanics of the bike were perfect for what he described as "commuting." He then helped with necessary accessories (the right lock, holder for the lock, helmet, basket, pump, etc.). We got everything we needed in short order. Once we purchased, the owner (I think - at least he acted like an owner who cares deeply about his business) took over. He tuned up the bike, put all attachments on it, let my son take it for a test ride, fixed the seat and handlebars for a perfect ergonomic fit, etc. I met my son at Memorial Union the day after we purchased the bike to get his books. Following the trip to the IU bookstore, I walked him to his bike which was securely locked. He loaded his books in his basket and I shed a tear as he rode off. But he's where he's supposed to be and I know he's got "wheels" so he won't be late to class (at least not because it took too long to walk).

I am new in town and this was the first bike shop I tried based on reviews online. Now I realize…read morethat there are sort of a handful only, probably from family and friends of the owner. My recommendation: trust your gut. If the person interacting with you looks miserable, rude, and does not want to talk about your bike...run away. The staff is not the most patient and friendly. Going there feels like going through a McDonald's Drive Through, even though there is no one in the store most of times. They did not want to discuss the details of the service or what could be the issue with the bike. When asked about the possibility to get a part replacement, they brushed it off as it would take too much time and did not stop moving forward with "it's going to be ready in 2 days" before I could follow up on the matter. I really needed the bike done, otherwise I would have just walked out the door. The service was very disappointing to say the least. My bike was dirty, and I assumed that paying for tune-up on top of the specific repair it needed would make them clean it up. Again, it is hard to have expectations for the service clear if the person seems unwilling to discuss it at drop off. To my surprise, the bike was as dirty as when I dropped it off. How can you make sure all mechanisms are running smoothly if you did not even clean the bike? I am pretty sure there was no tune-up there. It is frustrating to pay $100 for a ghost tune-up. Makes you wonder if the main repair was really done properly as well. I just did not give the lowest score because they were actually very fast and returned the bike in 2 days as promised. But it's kind of easy when you don't actually do much work on it.
