Federick is one of the old school original Indo Hakka restaurants in Toronto. I've eaten there many times over the years. This time, we went for lunch at their newer location off Markham Rd. Most in our party of seven were unfamiliar with this place. We ordered several dishes, including Chilli Chicken, Fried Rice, Tofu, Calamari, and more. My dining companions, especially the first-timers, loved it all. It was good but I prefer the food at the original location in Scarborough.

Once upon a time this place was hidden miss, but my last three visits here have been miss miss and miss. The rice is always overcooked and mushy, veggie items just taste like burnt oil, meat items have very little flavor and are just a goopy mess. Half the servers work hard while the other half loaf around and move across the floor like sloths. They definitely need a new cook and perhaps even new management. I have no plans to return in the near future. Lastly, even with all seats filled the place was freezing inside, and we had to eat with our coats on.

Passing through Markham , came upon Fredrick's ! Had heard a lot about it, so stopped in for lunch . Place was filling up fast, staff were busy making sure everyone was served. They were professional and friendly. The lunch specials are great - large selection, great price ($9.75 !!!) . Ordered chilli chicken as well as General Tao chicken with fried rice. Portions are good, food was delicious and well prepared.

Heard really good things about Frederick's. We were in the area and wanted some Hakka food. We ordered the chili chicken and crispy ginger beef. Our orders came with white rice. Sadly, the chili chicken was underwhelming and didn't have any strong flavours; it wasn't even spicy. The crispy ginger beef was almost too burnt to eat, but the flavours were somewhat decent. The rice is the worst part, it was like they had given us couple days old rice. It definitely was not fresh. As much as we hate wasting food, we had to throw much of it away. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

I think Federicks redeemed themselves, our waiter was super friendly and very attentive, luckily they weren't too busy when we were there. We ordered the American chip suey, garlic chicken, chicken pakora, chicken corn soup and chilli chicken. Everything was so fresh, and hot, the garlic chicken was sweet and spicy, the staff were attentive and listened to us that we wanted the soup and pakora first because before they never cared so I can see the service definitely improved as well as their food. The chicken corn soup was really flavourful especially with the red hot sauce, and the pakora was hot and squeeze that lemon it was crispy and juicy on the inside I can eat these all day, the American chop suey was so good with that crispy noodle and egg flavour bomb, and the garlic chicken oh my goodness they improved this like crazy, And the food wasn't that salty either, great job on Federick the staff have a smile on their face, this place will be around for generations upon generations RIP to the humble owner very kind soul but he lives on through this legacy.

Food is always hot, fresh and well seasoned. Portion size is good and value per dish is still in line compared to many well over processed restaurants. The place is clean and orderly. You always get a pitcher of water at the table. Their customer service seems to have improve as most of the staff was that friendly in the past. Hiring more females must have helped this as they are great.

The cooking aroma lured me in from the parking lot. Surprisingly, they are still offering great lunch deals (less than $10!) in February 2022, with a decent amount of protein and comes with a pop. Hakka cuisine can be similar to some traditional Chinese dishes with a hint(or a lot) of a Indian spices and chilli heat. Not my usual go to for cuisine but like I said the aroma shouted something good is being made here! I ordered three dishes to try from a Manchurian Beef(sweet red soy saucy?) Chili Fish and Shanghai noodles with Shrimp. The first two were medium spice and super saucey. The fish was drowning in spicy sauce so much so that I couldn't finish it and wanted some clean plain rice to soak up the palate. The Shanghai noodles were decent. A tad greasy, but I suppose that's a dish trade mark and great flavours. It had lots of shrimp and finely julienned veg sauté into it. I would come back again to try more lunch dishes again, it's a great deal here!

Beef chow mein and general Tao chicken.

I was so happy to find this place! I had been here years ago with friends and all was good. First time I went on my own to get takeout a few weeks ago I got beef chow mein and kung pao chicken. I asked if the chicken was spicy and the man taking my order said "no, not really" - the dish was literally covered in cut chillis!! It was sooo spicy I could hardly eat it. I had to pick out all the pieces of chilli. Went again yesterday and got beef chow mein again and general Tao chicken (knowing that wouldn't be as spicy). Food was delicious and the portion of noodles especially is insane for the price! Chicken was very fresh and not covered in batter like other places. Was happily enjoying my meal and then I bit into something hard. It was a piece of metal!! Looks like steel wool possibly? I checked the rest of my food carefully and didn't see anything else. I continued eating but just could not enjoy it the same way. I'm sure it's a fluke thing. I didn't bother to call to inform them as I know it wouldn't do anything. I trust this is not something that happens regularly. I can't feel the same way about this place though and if I did order again, I will always be eating with caution

It's a decent spot for Hakka. We got there at 1pm on a saturday and ordered 3 dishes for carry out. Only carry out available right now from covid restrictions. I would highly recommend the garlic chicken, chicken pakora and chicken chow mein noodle. We also ordered the chilli chicken and asked for saucey but I have had better in other locations. Pros: -Halal Meat -Fair prices (average $10/dish) -They give you a discount if you pay cash, so drop them dollar bills $$ Service was super fast, less than 20 min for our carry out.

The food here is very generous. We ordered the 4-person set with two side pots. Tomato Braised Beef Brisket and Chicken Stewed with Mushrooms and the portions were huge. Both pots arrived steaming hot and filled to the brim, clearly meant for sharing. The braised beef was rich and hearty, while the chicken pot was comforting and full of flavor, making it perfect for group dining or cold weather meals. Combined with the rustic, traditional décor, it really feels like authentic Northeast Chinese comfort food. The food and atmosphere were excellent, though the service was a bit lacking. Scallions, cucumber, hoisin sauce completed each wrap which highlighted the duck. Definitely the best traditional Peking Duck preparation I've had in a very very long time. The remains of the duck were used for make a duck fried rice and duck soup, again both were amazing. I had my food in my insulated bag, so the sauce leaked into the Fantuan bag and my insulated bag. Luckily, my car was fine. As a result, my rating is four stars. I wanted to try a new eatery. I looked at my Fantuan app and noticed He Bei Chinese Cuisine. It had dumplings and snacks that I enjoy, so I said yes to placing a dinner order from this eatery. I ordered these items: - Pork and chive steamed dumplings (large has 14 dumplings) - Tea eggs - Shredded potato salad On Fantuan, when you purchase $15 worth of food, you get the shredded potato salad for a cent. Deal! After placing my order near my home, I drove over to this eatery. The drive was ten minutes. I was given an estimated time of fifteen minutes. It was ready in ten minutes. I had no problem finding this eatery. There was plenty of parking. I pulled into a spot and walked in. I saw the Yubu sign. My heart sank, as I loved the Korean tofu pockets from this joint. I liked seeing places to sit down and eat at He Bei. Nice! A woman behind the counter came over. I said that I had a Fantuan order. She talked to me in Mandarin. I don't understand it, but we were fine communicating with each other in our languages. She pointed out the blue Fantuan bag on the table behind me. I thanked her and wished her a nice day. She said thanks right back. I put my food in my insulated bag. With the leak, I managed to launder the Fantuan bag and clean my insulated bag. After I cleaned up, I had dinner at home. The food was amazing and filling! I loved the shredded potato salad. Sure, a lot of the sesame-soy sauce was gone. However, it tasted yummy. It was worth the cent! The steamed pork and chive dumplings were so good. I didn't dunk them in soy sauce. The filling had so much moisture that I felt like I was eating soup dumplings. The filling had yummy flavour and the dumplings were steamed to perfection. Excellent! You can buy frozen dumplings from this place. I'll need to do it. The tea eggs were the perfect snack while streaming hockey games. I peeled the shells off both of them. The eggs were cracked to allow the amazing soy-based sauce to marinate and get into the eggs. Delicious! I'm a fan. I'll take a closer look at the lids on my food next time. I'm glad that I put food in my insulated bag. It saved cleaning my car's upholstery! (59)

So we ordered Maggi Lobster (~3lbs) for $34/lb, and stir fried beef with Chinese broccoli (gai lan). The lobster was cooked perfectly, with the Maggi sauce not being too salty. They definitely gave us all the pieces of the 3lbs lobster. The gai lan had a bitter aftertaste, which is common for this vegetable. I wished they had a way to get rid of that. They were generous with the amount of beef and was well marinated. The cut wasn't that great, but that is to be expected. I don't think they added much MSG or at least used good quality ones, as we did not feel overly thirsty later in the evening. They give free daily soup and dessert. What we were most impressive was with the service. The waiters were very attentive, changing our plates twice during our 1ish hour meal. The also gave us wet wipes and more napkins without us requesting it. They even offered us additional soup, which we declined as we were quite full.

The individual New Century slow boiled soup is hardest to share but secure some empty bowls and you can divide the hefty portion. In the winter, there's a silkiness to the piping hot consommé that sooths a dry throat and has an umami essence infused with abalone, ginseng, and pork. There's plenty to choose from in the house signature combo platter including roasted duck, soy sauce chicken, BBQ pork, pork slices, and seaweed salad. Saving my stomach for the later dishes, I had a taste of the duck (a good start with crispy skin) and BBQ pork (satisfactory and well flavoured). With the generous portion of chicken in the combo platter, the slow cooked chicken with abalone broth seemed like overkill. I've never been a huge fan of this dish that's served cold since I prefer chicken hot. Still, I understand it's the jelly layer between the skin and meat that people enjoy. And to be fair, the chicken was tender, and New Century certainly didn't skimp on the ginger and scallion oil. For those who tend to fill-up before the "main dishes", the stars of the combo arrive mid-meal. The stir-fried Vancouver crabs with silver fish in HK style spicy sauce needs to be eaten at arrival as the crunchy coating is best straight from the fryer. And despite not looking spicy, the dish has a light heat that permeates in the background. Additionally, the crab was fresh and meaty, cooked well so it remained delicately flakey. The amount of sweet and sticky sauce used in the stir-fried lobsters with scallion in Maggie sauce was well balanced, lightly covering the crustaceans. Both lobsters were substantial; even after eating many pieces, we still had plenty of leftovers. This is a long review head to Gastro World for the rest.

For the snack, we picked half Taiwanese sausage and half glutinous rice cake to get both savoury and dessert vibes. When the bowls came out, they looked huge, but the portion was kinda deceiving... it's a very wide, shallow bowl, so the amount of actual soup wasn't as generous as it looked. For a fish soup restaurant, I definitely expected a deeper bowl. But the fish itself was fresh with that nice bouncy texture, plus vermicelli and a solid amount of pickled veggies. They also have a self-serve rice station with both white rice and multigrain rice. The rice cookers even have little signs showing when a new batch is cooking, which I thought was cute and convenient. Overall, flavour wise, it was solid and the promo made it worth the visit. Dining style and dishes are all family style. You order a couple of dishes and then add rice. Spice level can be adjusted and even at 'less' the heat level was high. Definitely generous use of Szechwan peppercorns! Food is very flavourful and depending on preference some might find the oil level high. The clientele is mainly Mandarin speaking and if you are Asian they will immediately communicate in Mandarin with you but I did see the staff switch to English where needed. Service was patient and attentive.
