After 9 years, we had to come back for the pizza. It did not disappoint! This place is just a great spot in Sac! Vibes are great, customer service is really great too.
Met my SIL for lunch and decided on some good pizza. Federalist has some amazing pizza. We ordered some Wood Fired Rosemary Loaf and a Capitol Pizza along with a beer. There are several picnic tables and an area with a couch and chairs. There is an outside area but seemed to be off limits at the time. Food is always good and beers were cold. You pick up your food at the kitchen area and they ask that you bus your table when done.
Enjoyed some great pizza and drinks on a cool afternoon. We arrived shortly after they opened, and there wasnt much of a line or wait to be seated or order. The pizza options range across the board and allow for just about something for everyone. The pizzas can be shared and allow for left overs as well (which taste just as good the next day).
Such an interesting place in the nicest way possible lol It took us a minute to find the place since we didn't really think it was down an alleyway; look for a large container lol Very cool set up with a lounge area and some couches around a TV and then larger farmhouse tables through the sitting area. The outside patio has a firepit and some interesting seating options although with a mister for those really hot days. This is a self serve restaurant. Ordering at the counter and picking it up when it's ready. We visited on a Sunday evening around 5pm and there wasn't a whole lot of people around. I'm surprised this place doesn't have a higher rating, but also not really because people are super picky about how they like their pizzas. This was definitely more Neapolitan like; thinner, wood fired crust and in knowing that you have to semi expect a somewhat softer (maybe mushy) center. The crust was fantastic, chewy and soft in the middle. The outside edges had a slight crisp from the fire which added a good flavor to it. We ordered the Stanford and Southside -- added soy chorizo to one and pepperoni to the other. Both were fantastic in their own way. I loved the added arugula on to of the Stanford and the soy chorizo wasn't too spicy and added a nice depth of flavor. Overall we felt like the pizza was a good price for what we received. They do have a good selection of rotating beer, I opted for a sangria which was decent. I would have preferred it with some ice as it was only on the cool side
Visited friends in Sac and had dinner at the Federalist. I loved the setting and how open and airy it was, casual with picnic tables and self serve water, plates, silverware. It's an order at the counter and seat yourself established, though we reserved a spot the night before. The Ricky ricotta was delicious, fatty, cheesy, and sweet from the hot honey. The Stanford was fine but limp from the vegetables and under seasoned. Oddly, the mushrooms and salad were our favorite. The lemon vinaigrette for the salad was fire and those mushrooms were super tasty. I'd definitely return for a beer and pizza.
My first night in Sac and my group decided to check this place out as it was highly recommended. It's a decently sized space, tucked away in between an alley. Immediately upon entering, the menu is splayed across a green board. They have a nice selection of beers, pizzas, and other bites (salads, grazing foods and even ice cream!) Tucked under the board are even some games, which I would recommend you check out as the wait can be long. Ordering was smooth and quick and was given a buzzer for the order. There are plenty of benches to choose from but they may be filled with plates and trash from other patrons as it is a "buss yourself " kind of place. There are staff that do help clean it, but when it gets busy it not be a first priority. They have what seems to be a wood fired pizza oven, which was cool to watch. With that said- our pizzas took almost an hour to come out, with the salad taking about half that. There was a large party ahead and our buzzer seemed to be broken so we weren't alerted at all until a staff member brought it directly to our table. We ordered the Pepperoni, Chavez, and Southside with an arugula salad. They were out potatoes so we didn't have a true Chavez experience. Pepperoni was our top choice with Chavez and Southside falling behind. The pizza did a get a tad oily but the arugula added a nice peppery bite. Chili oil and pepper flakes can be found among benches and were nice additions. If you're a spice lover like I am, then the chili oil has just a hint of spice at the end with a mostly neutral flavor. It was definitely really great to try, but I may explore more of Sac before coming back. Tldr: lots of bench seating, wood fired pizza oven, longish wait, decent sizes and tasty overall. Get the arugula to top your pizza
Good vibes, great pizza! Friendly staff! It's a pick your own place to sit/clean up the table once you leave establishment! It gets busy quickly in the evening. Two single stall restrooms available, community board games as well. Feel free to ask for ranch, it matches the pizza perfectly. One complaint was that the music was very loud intermittently, it was hard to have conversations every now and then. Parking is a doozy since this place is a little hidden, but I parked near seasons coffee and walked a bit and it wasn't too bad.

The Federalist has a super cool and casual vibe with plenty of outdoor seating that makes it perfect for a relaxed hangout, date night, or catching up with friends. They specialize in woodfired pizzas, and everything I tried was spot-on. I had the arugula salad, which was super fresh and lightly dressed, a perfect starter. I also ordered a side of their fire-roasted mushrooms, sautéed with herbed butter, garlic and fresh herbs. But the real standout? The Canadian bacon and pickle pizza. If you're a pickle lover, do not skip this one. The balance of salty, tangy, and smoky was surprisingly addictive and unique -- definitely one of those combos that just works. The beer selection is small but solid. Just enough to pair well with your meal without overwhelming you with choices. Overall, The Federalist is a great little spot with good food, chill vibes, and a fun hidden-away location.
It was Friday night date night and we were looking to grab a pizza! Usually we do mod pizza but wanted to gamble on something new. So we came across Federalist and headed downtown. The parking lot is limited but we managed to squeeze in a spot. They serve many wood grilled pizzas, beers on tap and a few wines. I got the pepperoni pizza and my date got a build it yourself pizza. You get about six decent slices. I loved my pepperoni pizza because it came out hot and the pepperoni had some spice to it! They were playing some basketball games on the tv, they had bocci ball and plenty of seating with even some comfortable couches. The staff was helpful and suggested what wine might compliment my pizza.
Wood fired pizza, fantastic crackle and chew on the crust. I liked the topping, would have been nice if it was better distributed (on the Capitol). I love the butter they serve on the rosemary loaf. One suggestion in general is to rinse/quick soak the red onions with ice water or quick pickle them on the pizza and salad, as the raw red onion is just too much and completely overpowers the rest of the pizza or salad that it is on. The outdoor environment is great! Loved the benches, lights, and games they had on the side. We were quoted a wait of 1 hr for the pizza after ordering and it ended up being much less, maybe 25 minutes.
Had a great time here for the first time. Alyssa was very sweet and kind! The pizza was super good and the ranch is house made!!! The Ricky ricotta had a nice mix of flavors and the fresh basal is the best. Ordering meatballs can be off but they have the best ratio from cause to meat and they pair it with a side of bread also delicious. We order the white sangria on the side and their cider which paired well with our meal. The seating is plentiful and on cold nights they the heaters on but be sure to bundle up still!
What do you mean it's in the alley way? Yes girl, you got to park your car and make your way to a restaurant in the alley. Once your in the aroma of pizza and fresh air surround you. You order at the counter and then grab your pizzas at the kitchen window. Very cute space and delicious pizza! Did I mention they have vegan yum yums. Recommend for sure!

Came here to try for the first time & we were guided through an alley, but the parking was a little confusing so we decided to park on the street. Upon entering, the whole place was lit up & we were greeted immediately. We were offered recommendations as we browsed the menu. We decided on the special, which was a Hawaiian style pizza, & the Capitol for takeout. The place had a cute, cozy type of feeling to it. Honestly, it reminded me of a restaurant you would visit with your college friends to hang out & relax while enjoying some pizza & playing games. We sat near the kitchen area & grabbed some waters while we waited. Our food didn't take too long as it wasn't that busy inside, & we were offered their homemade ranch to take with us. The pizzas were a decent size, but I do think they're on the more pricier side for the amount that you get. The Capitol pizza was okay, we felt as though it was lacking something else as a topping. We wound up adding jalapeños to it & that helped, but it was still bland compared to the Hawaiian style pizza we had next. The special was cooked perfectly & paired amazing with their homemade ranch (dare I say.. best homemade ranch I've ever had?). Overall, I really did enjoy visiting this spot! It's a great hangout place & somewhere I'd want to come back to try more. read more
After a busy morning at the farmers market, we needed some lunch. After seeing a picture of the pizza online, we knew that The Federalist would be delicious. They have a wonderful outdoor seating area. It is nice with a 70-80 degree day, but any hotter than that, I fear it would be a little miserable. I do like that they have misters out there. They do also have a covered outdoor eating area too. They have games to share which would be perfect for a group dinner. There is also lots of beer and wine, including sangria, available to go with your meals. One of their pizzas was in Forbes Magazine for being one of the most creative pizzas in the US. As per usual, I felt like I needed some vegetables in my life. The arugula salad was what we decided on. This salad came with market arugula, capers, red onions, pecorino romano, and a lemon vinaigrette. It was a great serving size. The capers were a perfect addition to this salad. It was a refreshing salad and a perfect pairing for the pizzas here. The Ricky Ricotta pizza comes with deep dish sauce, fresh mozz, pepperoni, ricotta, fresh basil, mike's hot honey, pecorino romano. I am a sucker for hot honey on a pepperoni pizza. The pepperonis were the cute yummy little baby ones. And so many of them which was a major plus. The cheese/ toppings did slide off, but that could be because I did not for it to cool down. I really enjoyed the basil addition to this. The dough was delicious. Perfect thickness in my opinion. We also had the formaggio pizza which had crushed tomato, fresh mozz, shredded mozz, pecorino romano, and oregano. You could tell they used some quality cheese in this pie. It was a good balance to the other pizza we tried. Highly recommend visiting this spot. read more

Federalist is a unique spot tucked in an alley off 19th, but once you're inside, it opens up into a lively space built out of shipping containers with a great mix of open air and cozy charm. The wood-fired pizza oven fills the whole place with the most amazing smell, and the pizzas definitely live up to it. We ordered the Garfield, and after a few bites, I told my boyfriend it reminded me of lasagna. He laughed and pointed out the name, which made it even better. Rich, cheesy, and comforting, which hit the spot. However, I will note that the pizzas feel a bit pricey for the portion, one $18-$20 pizza was not enough to fill us both up, which was a little disappointing. Their IPAs are excellent. They're crisp, hoppy, and super drinkable. It's a great spot for local beer lovers. All around, a great place atmosphere to drink a beer, watch a sports game and hang out. read more

The Federalist is a vibe!! Love the open floor plan, with both indoor seating and outdoor benches near to fire pits. Very cozy feeling and the pizza is delicious! I'm usually not a big beer person, but I really enjoyed their cider! We paired our drinks with the Stanford (pesto pizza) and another pie I forget the name of, but it came with hot honey! Both were very tasty and the crust is definitely made in-house, not frozen. Make sure to check this place out! It's a great, chill spot for both small and large groups! read more

I will preface this by saying we were a large group and I understand that's hard to manage with a wood oven and a lot of pizzas ... BUT! We gave them our group reservation AND orders a week in advance. Then we called before we were heading over. And yet, as we arrived NOTHING had been started. They then had to ring up each order individually and started firing off pizzas one at a time. Some people waited two hours to get any food. And at least 4 of the pizzas had raw insides and had to be re-made. Some people didn't even get their food in the end because they waited so long and ended up sharing with another person who had food. It was ridiculous. The salads were fine, but not great. The meatballs were average. But the pizzas were terribly made. The cheese was too heavy for the thin crust and like I said earlier, many of the crusts were raw. I'm sorry to say, I would never go back here. read more
While visiting Sac and arriving in the evening, we looked for spots still open where we could sit down, unwind, and that weren't closing within the hour. Doing a couple of quick Yelp searches, would love to come back for a Sac brew tour! After the first two spots were closed for private holiday events, we saw a sign that had an arrow pointing to pizza..so naturally we took that as a "sign". What a fun surprise to be greeted by Federalist Pizza ~ converted storage container vibe serving pizza straight from the oven with heaters/a fire pit, brews, creative Za' selections and appetizers, and games/kid-friendly toys. What a score! We quickly got cozy after ordering a Margherita, Ricky Ricotta, and their version of meatballs called Cannonballs. Service was spot on and with the storm that was approaching, it seemed like others had the same idea to get warm here too. The Cannonballs were warm and hearty, felt like my Dad was working with them in the back of house (he makes excellent meatballs, secret recipe!) Served with a warm piece of bread to soak up the remainder "Sunday Sauce", this appetizer scored a homerun. The Margherita was tasty and quickly devoured, but I was a bit puzzled by the Ricky Ricotta. I wanted to try something different, so I went with something I've never had before...pepperoni, ricotta, and hot honey. Unfortunately I think my order fell a bit short. The excess of toppings while presentation was stellar, were almost too over-the-top to where the pizza underneath and/or toppings were cold. While picking up the slices everything toppled off, and while I love a good scoop, it missed the mark for me. Quality ingredients, but there may be another way to drive this concept home for the price paid. Would def come back to try other pizza creations with hometown brews in such fun digs. read more

Second time here just as good as the first! Ordered the focaccia and meatballs. Incredible flavor. Tomato sauce is perfect along with the garlic herb butter. 10/10 read more
Love this spot!!! The ambiance of the space was everything--we sat by the fire pit which had really good vibes. I love how they had games too (corn hole and maybe bocci?). Everything was so lively and fun--it felt like a summer night even though I came in February lol. It was easy to order right at the counter and then pick up your food when the buzzer buzzed. I ordered the margherita pizza and cannonballs--both were soooo good. I highly recommend! read more
Fun, casual place inside a complex of box car containers! They have a big wood fired oven, a great tap list, and some small plate options as well. You order at the counter, so it's easy to order separately with a big group if you don't want to deal with splitting a check. The inside has picnic tables, and a cozy couch area. There is also a fire pit and Adirondack chairs on the patio outdoors. read more

Came here on a Sunday evening, now that the weather is warm and nice out and it was such a cute vibe. They are in a niche spot inside of an alley. It wasn't too busy so I was able to order right away. They also do beer samples which is nice when figuring out what to order. We ordered a margarita pizza. The pizza was delicious! The crust was slightly risen, soft and crunchy which I appreciated. I wish there was a little more sauce but the flavor was there. The atmosphere was very nice outside too. We sat on one of the picnic tables and enjoyed the fresh air. The inside was a bit more lovely and full of larger groups but everyone had enough space for their groups. Would love to came back again and try more of their pizzas and beer. read more
Cool location! SERVICE: The staff was friendly! However, keep in mind you order at the counter so not much interaction with staff. They did bring out the pizza quickly. FOOD: The sauce was good but the rest of the pizza lacked the wow factor. We got the pepperoni pizza (forgot to take a pic). The crust was a little burnt (some people like that) and the pepperoni was too salty for me. AMBIANCE: The location is cool. It has a backyard vibe and is located down an ally way. Park in the lot across the street ($7). I thought the games they have sitting out was a nice touch. Overall, I can see how people like the vibe here but the pizza is not my taste so we won't be back. read more

The Federalist, My Go-To Hangout Spot! I have tried a decent portion of their menu and I can honestly say that I have never had a bad thing on their menu. I was honestly shocked that I haven't reviewed this place yet! First, you have to get their pizza! My personal favorite is the Santa Maria, but the margherita is also great because it has a Vegan Option Available! The cannonballs are spicy meatballs in a delicious red Casauce. If you get this, I would recommend that you also order the rosemary loaf too because the side of bread is too small for the amount of meatballs and sauce. Second - Drinks: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Sangria. They have two options a white (more of a peachy/ citrus flavor) and a red (more of a berry/citrus flavor). Both are delicious though and perfect for any wine drinker. They also have beers of course, but please try the Sangria :) read more

We came on a quiet weekday evening and ordered their stanford pizza at the counter before taking our seat. We were the only customers there and the food came out quickly. We thought the ingredients tasted fresh but the pizza was slightly bland. They do have chili oil to add for taste which helped. Love that they have quite a few vegetarian items on their menu! Would love to come back to try their beer on tap! read more

Is this pizza restaurant walkable of Sheraton 1230 J?
It's a little bit of a walk. Easy, flat walk in a very safe area, but probably a 15-20 minutes walk. Sac also has a bike share program that is easy and check. Look into JUMP bike app. $1 for 15 minutes. It is a very easy bike ride to there.
Do they have vegan burgers? I didn't see them on the menu but I thought I've heard this place does. Maybe I missed them? Thanks!
They are not part of the regular menu. On Thursdays they serve them until they run out.
Can you bring kids?
Yes kids are welcome. I bring my school aged kids all the time.
