We were on our way to Point Robinson Park to see the Troll but didn't know we had to take a Ferry to get there, hehe. Even though it was later during the day, I told the other half lets do it, lets go on the Ferry!! hehe. I always wanted to see how the Ferry works with vehicle, last Ferry ride we parked our car and hopped on the Ferry this time we got to try it out, pretty cool. Made me wish Oahu had the ferry- to go to the other islands, so junk that they had to stopped the ferry! I didn't see any info. posted for the cost to bring your car on the Ferry, there wasn't any info. on Ferry schedule either. After asking attendant, we paid $24.95 per car which includes the fare for driver and $14.90 additional per adult. This is for round trip. Need to let the attendant know where you are going, for us its Vashon Island with a V!! Staff will assist you on where to go and when to go on the ferry, pretty cool experience, once the Fauntleroy Ferry runs, I loved the scenic views of Olympic mountain, just loved the experience! So cool, upon arriving we drove off to see and explore Vashon Island. The junk part is we arrived late so not much time, will start bright and early to have an entire day. read more

I live on the island, so I use the Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal frequently and have a lot of experience with the ferry schedule. Overall, the terminal gets the job done, but there are definitely some areas that could be improved. One of the biggest issues is that the scheduled ferry times aren't always reliable. I would estimate that around 30% of the time, the ferry is running late, which can make planning around appointments, work, or other commitments difficult--especially when you rely on the ferry to get on and off the island regularly. That being said, I do appreciate that the staff generally do their best to prioritize people who need to board first and make accommodations for emergencies, particularly when someone needs to get off the island urgently. That can make a big difference for island residents. Another downside is the lack of shaded areas while waiting. During the warmer months, sitting in your car while waiting for the ferry can become incredibly hot, especially when there's no shade available. Overall, the terminal is an essential part of island life, and the staff do their best to keep things moving. However, more reliable scheduling and some sort of shaded waiting area would make the experience much better for the many people who use the ferry regularly. read more

I was a little stressed driving to Fauntleroy Ferry Terminal as it was my first time driving a vehicle aboard a ship, but the process was actually fairly straightforward. I would definitely recommend arriving early as the line to board can span the length of Fauntleroy St. Roundtrip tickets are reasonably priced, with adults being $6.75 pp and cars being $29.55 (price also includes driver). You are directed to a lane after purchasing your tickets, which you will stay in as it leads aboard to the ferry. There are also workers who will direct you in case you get confused. I thought it was a very cool experience and loved that you could turn your car off and go upstairs to the deck and take in the views. The ferry ride is pretty short-- about 20 minutes or so and there are restrooms, board games, and concessions available. I picked up some hummus and pretzels for $6.52. PS- The ferry terminal has two destinations; Vashon and Soundworth. Make sure you go to the right lane!!! read more

Taking this ferry is much much easier than we imagined. We had passed it many many times (our dog's veterinarian is just a mile or two away) and so we knew exactly how to get there - we'd also been the park nearby where some folks park to walk on and you will also see folks lined up along the road here waiting to board. We barely waited - just happened to time it right - there's a convenient ticket seller (x2) and then you're in line. Boom. Piece of cake. The ferry system is new to this California girl. But, as a new Washingtonian I am getting accustomed to using the ferry to go places I want to go. The ferry terminal is clearly marked and easy to board. The staff very friendly despite my confusion at which lane to enter. The hard part about the ferry? Other people. Someone decided they didn't have to wait in the lane for vehicles waiting. Be safe and considerate. Riding the ferry is a process. Ten minutes later, When I looked behind, there was a long line of cars that went around the corner onto the main road. Yesterday was my first time going on a ferry, with my car, by myself! Haha! I have been to other islands but with people who deal with the car and the ticket. If you're also a newbie, here are some tips: - arrive early! I got there early and was 3rd in line but the ferry line can go for blocks and blocks along Fauntleroy St. -you can't buy tickets online from here to Vashon so just pull up to the ticketing stand, similar to how you pay your ticket at a parking garage, and they'll charge you from your car -buying a ticket to Vashon is always a round trip -the ride is fast! By the time I got situated, I could already see the dock on the other side! It was a really easy experience! I can't wait to explore the ferry more this summer to other island. read more

Definitely the worst ferry to catch. You line up against Lincoln park (beware putting this terminal into your GPS, it'll take you the opposite way where you can't turn left to the terminal). I worked a day shift and had my car so I decided to battle thru Seattle traffic, saw there's a 1635 ferry to Southworth and drove to the terminal only to approach from the opposite end of the line and having to drive past a couple miles of cars wondering how the hell im gonna make the boat. Quick U turn and now the waiting game. Well, I didn't make the boat. You're gonna have to sit pretty until the next one. Absolutely trash. I'll deal with traffic next time! read more

This ferry terminal is off of 48th and Barton Street in Seattle. It's easy to get on the ferry. One major tip: make sure you get in the correct line to either Vashon or Southworth. They will load the ferry depending on which terminal you will he getting off at. You may yourself in a location you didn't want to be at. I feel it's quick and efficient when loading people, cyclists, and cars on and off the ferry. If you're headed to Vashon, the fare may be steeper. There are no fees on the way back from the Vashon Terminal. We have also taken this ferry all the way to Southworth. It makes a quick stop at Vashon. read more

Well I am a big defender of public transportation and the ferries do fall into that category, I feel like this terminal could do a lot better. The Washington State Department of Transportation has been running ferries for quite a long time. It's hard to believe that in all that time they could not make this little terminal a bit better. As a walk-on passenger, you walk into a very small room with some very old-fashioned benches. They have a couple of electronic vending machines to buy tickets as well as a person behind a glass window. There are also turnstyles with ticket scanners and ORCA card readers to let you through when you are ready to board. I'm glad they have all of that technology in place but the facility is old and in need of some very much TLC. When they direct you out, you scan your ticket or your ORCA card and proceed through the turnstile out to the ferry. Not too difficult but still very cramped especially at commuting times. You can either go to Vashon Island or Southworth on the Kitsap Peninsula. While the turnstiles are labeled for the different destination so they can charge you appropriately, I feel like it would be very easy to scan your car for Vashon Island and go all the way to Southworth and cheat the system in the end. There was no enforcement or anything and I could have paid cheaper for a Vashon ticket even though I went to Southworth. Hopefully someday the state will be able to upgrade this as they are with the terminal currently in downtown Seattle. read more

Fauntleroy!!!! Sounds like an angry mother screaming at her kids while on a roadtrip. This terminal is odd. It's small and only gets you to/from Vashon and Southworth while in West Seattle. Tip: Download the WA DOT app and use it for the ferry schedule along with warnings for weather and to see how many spots are left on the ferry. The ferry runs about every 40 min. leaving W. Sea. You buy your ticket at the booth, receive a ticket that you stick in your dash indicating your destination and head to the lane you're directed to by the booth agent. You use to have to go to a second booth to verify what lane to go into, but no longer as of Dec. 23rd. There is also a new bike only lane. read more

The ferry terminal at Fauntleroy in West Seattle is small. It has two destinations, Vashon Island and Southworth in Kitsap County. The terminal is nothing like the one in downtown Seattle. It is much smaller. Took a day trip to Vashon as a walk-on passenger. They do not have a passenger ramp here. Instead, you just walk onboard of the ferry when you are ready to board if you are not travelling in a car. There is a small terminal with a waiting area in which you can buy ferry tickets at one of two kiosks. You can also buy tickets from the ticket seller located at the front entrance. The trip is real short. Just 20 minutes to Vashon, but it seems like a tough place to get in and out from. If I did it again, I would have took a car. The town is not right next to ferry like Bainbridge Island and Bremerton are. You need a car or need to take a bus to get to town. Though I guess you could walk to town, it is a bit far. King County Metro has a stop next to the ferry and I believe they coordinate schedules to match the departure and arrival times for the ferry, but Metro has limited hours. Also, there is no service on Sunday. Overall, the ferry ride to Vashon was fine. It was short and sweet. The terminal at Fauntleroy is basic, but it does its job. read more

Love the ferries. After riding for six months now I consider myself an intermediate ferry rider. On a daily basis I'm amazed at how many truly clueless drivers I encounter. Here are a few. 1- Not sure where my money is guy. I get behind this guy on a regular basis. This is the guy who stops to buy a ticket but doesn't have his wallet ready and spend 3 minutes trying to find it, while I sit there with my pass just waiting like a shmuck. 2- Ms "oh there are other people here?" There are two entrances and this is the person who almost smashes into me getting to their lane. 3- captain Stallpants- You'd be amaze at how often someone's car stalls in one of the lanes. I don't know if they have really crappy cars or bad batteries or what. They just sit there while 200 cars wait for one of the ferry employees to bring out the mini tower. 4- Joe Talksalot. This is the guy who has to stop at the edge of the ramp to ask one of the Ferry employees for directions or what their favorite place to eat on Vashon is.. Simply the easiest way to Port Orchard. You leave from West Seattle, near Fauntleroy Cove and Lincoln Park. Our family has taken this trip many times and the traffic down to Tacoma is a bear. So why bother? Besides, the ferries are fun and the food is actually good. Enjoy! read more

I've been to vashon island a couple of times. The first time I walked on the ferry and the second time I drove with my sister. The price for my sister and I in the car was $28.50. it's free to come back whenever from vashon. The ferry comes pretty frequently like every half an hour. Beautiful view on a nice day! read more

These guys go through SO MUCH everyday. They're running transportation like it's a utility (which for commuters it IS) and they do a great job. The "ferry boat cafe" is over priced to a " fall of the decadent greco-roman empires" kind of way. As are all the vending machines. It's crazy. It has always been that way, except when on ONE run they had an actual restaurant provide great food for a competitive price. The ride itself varies greatly from run to run. ( That is: it depends on where you're going) The view is usually great and if you've never been or it's not regular for you to go on the ferry it will probably be something delightful you remember. If you are a visitor from the mainland- just ask somebody in a uniform what to do. Procedure varies from run to run but it's mostly dictated by common sense. There are also signs. Explaining everything you need to know. Same with anything you do on the boat. (ex: don't run on the deck, you could fall off. Don't leave your bags unattended - which would violate common sense anyway since most people don't leave their personal effects of valuables laying around to be stolen. etc etc ) And as Dani said, yep safest Ferry system in the world. read more

This was my first time traveling on a ferry with a vehicle, and I was very pleased. It was also my first ferry ride since moving to Washington. It was easy to find, the staff at the booth were very patient and explained how everything works (I was taking the Vashon/Southworth ferry and couldn't figure out if i had to get off the ferry and onto another one haha). This ferry terminal doesn't know what a schedule is, they're never on time and continually use the excuse of heavy vehicle traffic, the boats still hold the same cars. Only a state job like this can you always be late and there be no problems. If they were able to run on schedule this route would be amazing for the convenience but some days you almost waste more time waiting on late boats than if you were to drive around. read more

The ferry system needs to be more reliable. I gave up waiting for an hour with no end in site on Sat Aug 2. My co-worker who was ahead of me in line informed me that the boat he got on wasn't even at capacity. It was only about 2/3 full. The WSF system is fantastic! I was totally enamored with how many ferries there were in Istanbul and how frequented they were, but looking at our systems, we have a great one here! Where there is more foot traffic there, we apparently carry the largest number of cars in the world annually! That's pretty BIG time, if you ask me... The ferries are fairly comfortable. It's not like getting onto a Princess Cruises ship, but you have got decent seats, usually a little cafe area if it's open, restrooms, and gorgeous views! It seems like there's always an old video game or two, though I'm not sure if I just frequent the same routes more than others. The food's kind of rough, the games aren't new, and the seats aren't plush or velvety, but you get a beautiful ride to a "faraway" place and it makes a great bit of a date! Riding a ferry can def be a romantic way to spend an evening, especially if it's warm enough to spend the time outside enjoying the water and fresh air! I cannot get enough of the Edmonds-Kingston Ferry, since I live in Edmonds and there is a great crepe shop just on the other side of the ferry! I can walk on, grab lunch, and spend the day milling around for a bit to make a great relaxing restful day! Also, I love visiting Port Townsend and PA and heading to the peninsula! We should color ourselves lucky to have a system like this in Washington. On top of just living near all of this beautiful water, we are given the opportunity to travel out over it relatively easily and pretty affordably. read more

Going to say 3-1/2 stars but rounding up because it beats fighting the Tacoma bottleneck and the narrows bridge backup. If everything was smooth, no accidents, no fires, no incompetent drivers, driving to Port Orchard would take about an hour and 15 minutes, average. Making sure you get here early to get on, stopping at Vashon first, taking the ferry usually runs me an hour 30 to an hour 45 or so. I love the fact that I can put only 10 miles on my odometer though, relax and read in line at the terminal and on the boat, not have any traffic induced stress. Well worth the money and the few extra minutes of time. Specially since the "ideal" drive NEVER happens. It is a small terminal and not much of a waiting area, so cars often are lined up along the far right of Fauntleroy in front of Lincoln Park. Coming from my direction it sometimes requires driving down to the end of the line and turning around to wait, but not a big deal. Love it when I can catch a route, usually coming back, that doesn't stop at Vashon, then it's a super fast trip. Also, I love the WDOT smart phone App, not only will give you the ferry schedule, but has live updates on any traffic issues as well. For example Saturday heading over in debating whether to drive or ferry, the App reported a big fire in Tacoma with a bunch of lanes closed, so decision made for Ferry. Returning on Sunday, App reported accident in Tacoma with multiple lanes closed, once again, decision for ferry. So highly recommend the smart phone app as well as the ferry system. read more

I've ridden these ferries most of my life. If you're running late, they're on schedule. If you're on time, they're late.

You have two destinations to chose from at this terminal, either Vashon or Fauntleroy (west Seattle) and each sailing goes to a different destination and thus staging of cars is done with boarding cards that clearly name your destination so the dock workers don't put you on the wrong vessel if you are in the wrong queue after the ticketing booths. This terminal is very small and not much to it, which brings the challenges fir walk on passengers not having access to proper facilities to use while waiting for the departure time to the destination you chose. Fares are decent for the roughly 10 minute sailing, seeing as they take roughly 20 minutes to board and disembark at this terminal. I would say that a majority of the wait time comes from the smaller staging area and backup onto the main road. I would arrive if travelling by car at minimum 50 minutes before the scheduled sailing to guarantee a spot on the vessel of the departure time you're looking to get on. Roughly every hour there's a departure to Fauntleroy or Vashon so you have ample chances to get onboard a sailing before the last sailing of the night. If you miss the last sailing just hunker down in your car and be onboard the first sailing of the next morning to your destination or chance the time it takes to go down and around the peninsula to get to Fauntleroy and Vashon is only accessible by vessel and the scheduled departures for summer schedule is ample and with larger vessels, three in total sailing on the routes from here. Relax and enjoy the wait to board and the 10 minute or so sailing time! read more

First time using the Washington State Ferry System. As an out of state visitor I should have done more research. The cop at the street directed us to the booth on the left. The lady in the toll booth correctly sold us tickets from Fauntleroy to Southworth and said we would make the 2:15p. We were directed to lanes 1 or 2. 20 minutes go by and the lanes to the right and far left get on the ferry. The Ferry leaves. Apparently we were directed to the Vashon lanes NOT the Southworth lanes. I only learned this after asking another cars passengers. A whole hour later with two toddlers in the back, we finally get on. 1 extra star because of the excellent customer service provided by Tony and getting us on an earlier ferry. read more
