Located in a food court I was walking by and what caught my eye was the cervello fritto (fried brain), and the coccoli. These are both items I had read about to try while in Firenze. At the time they were out of the cervello fritto so I returned the next day.
I've had brain before. One of the best dishes I had while in India was brain curry. It was very rich and has a different texture, but oh so good. Fried brain was good because it gave it a crunch while still being creamy inside. It was fried to perfection, not too oily or overcooked. But it did turn out to be slightly bland. The squeezed lemon on it was good but I felt it needed just a little more, maybe a pinch of salt? But hey I guess my palette is just a little different.
The coccoli was ok. I misinterpreted what it would be. I was expecting it to be prosciutto and cheese inside of dough then fried instead of being fried dough with prosciutto and stracchino. Once again it was fried to perfection, not too oily. I was expecting to bite into a ball filled with meat and gooey cheese, but my mistake. The quality of the prosciutto and stracchino was good but I'm not an expert.
Overall I'm glad I got to try cervello fritto and coccoli. That is after all one of the reasons I travel. read more
