Unical Driving School is awesome and affordable. Signing up for the teen 6 hour behind-the-wheel…read moretraining was painless, thanks to the friendly staff. Instructor Edward Wu is a very cool and professional guy. He made me feel confident behind the wheel in just about every daily driving situation. You can often hear him telling you "No worries." Edward was also prompt to pick me up from home at the appointment time. Minus one star because like Helen D. mentioned in a previous review, he can be impatient at times. In my case, he wanted me to promptly take off from a stop sign as soon as I can to a stop (assuming it was clear, of course). Other than this minor incident, I would highly recommend Unical Driving School.

SHORT VERSION: If you wish to pass the driving test, I'd recommend Viva driving school in Pasadena…read more They will teach you everything you need to know about what the DMV will expect. If you wish for a cheap driving school, this school will do $60 per 2-hr session but you won't learn as much and you will probably get a lot of errors during the driving test. LONG VERSION: The overview of my scenario: I took two 2-hour driving sessions with 'Unical Driving School' and a 1-hour driving session + DMV servicing with another school called 'Viva Driving School'. 4 NOV 2013: Called to schedule my appointment, and the receptionist who I talked to wasn't rude, but didn't explain to me much about their programs either. All she said was "$60 for 2 hours". I made an appointment anyway because it was VERY cheap compared to other schools. 6 NOV 2013: It was the day of my appointment. The instructor was supposed to be here at 1:45pm, but he (Edward Wu) came 10 minutes late. He was very nice, so I decided not to mark him for being late. I told him it was my first time driving, so he drove around for 15 minutes, but he didn't really teach me anything while he was driving. It was my turn to drive, and I did "pretty well for a first time driver" (in the words of Mr. Wu). We drove around Monterey Park, and occasionally, he would tell me to slow down when no cars were around, and then tell me to speed up when cars started to line up behind me. It got pretty annoying. Occasionally, he would go on his phone and not really pay attention to how I was driving. At the end of the lesson, he wanted me to schedule another appointment, and I did it (which I knew I would regret) because I felt like I didn't really learn anything. 7 NOV 2013: This time, he was 20 minutes late... minus one star. He taught me how to change lanes, which was great, but he did the same thing as he did yesterday (telling me to slow down and speed up)... minus another star. That's all he taught me for that day... Same thing as yesterday, he was on his cellphone, plus, he would occasionally yawn. He wanted me to schedule another appointment, and that's when I felt that he was doing that on purpose to make more money. 12 NOV 2013: This was the day I had my DMV driving test. I decided to try 'Viva Driving School' in Pasadena because they had a special package where they do DMV Servicing (they take you to the DMV at the day of your test, and let you use their car to take the test) plus a 1-hr driving session prior to the test. They taught me a lot about what was expected on the test, things that weren't discussed from 'Unical Driving School'... minus TWO stars. I learned WAY more in 1 hour with 'Viva Driving School' than I did in 4 hours with this school.

Update: It has been almost 5 years and I passed my driver's test first try after hiring back our…read moreprevious driving instructor. Now the reason I am updating is that honestly my family cannot let it go that Robert hit me. Sure it was nothing painful but he cannot hit a student especially when I was 17 at the time. Now I will tell you what I did while driving Robert's car :) Disclaimer: I was 17 and this was 5 years ago, so I think that is past the statute of limitations. I knew Robert was bad and my mom was insisting that I tried him regardless of his 2-star business. My mom assumed United driving school was the driving school she took, but she wasn't sure. I read my mom all those past reviews and honestly she thought I was complaining to complain. I tried to think positive and maybe I could enjoy it or be on his good side. I was dead wrong when I drove a mile in Robert's car. Robert really likes to slam the teacher brakes and honestly it scares me every time and sometimes the drivers behind us too. I knew that Robert was notorious for pulling you over to review or lecture you. I found that was a time filler so you could spend more money, so instead of listening to him I thought of how to irritate him. First thing I did was question what would happen if I crashed his car? So all driving instructors have insurance obviously and brakes on the passenger side and I wondered what was stronger the gas pedal or his brakes? How good are Robert's reflexes? So, every time Robert braked, I floored it. Robert hit me after that and told me to pull over, which I didn't. In addition to accelerating, I also intentionally braked hard on stop signs. Next, he told me to go home and he couldn't teach me, so on almost every right turn, I went 40 mph so that I can give him a mini heart attack. He screamed every time. When I got home he lectured me and I ignored every word then when he asked me to pay him more than his rate of $60. I just threw the $60, left the car and slammed his door with the seatbelt on the frame of the door and went home. Roger kept ringing the doorbell and I told my mom he hit me. My mom ignored his constant ringing and then she called United Driving School office to yell at the secretary and said she will never come back. Looking back, I knew my actions were disrespectful and I could have hurt Robert or myself. But honestly, Roger was such a terrible human being and the other yelp reviews kind of justify my actions, but not really. My mom and dad still hate him

Do. Not. Want. Years…read moreago as a young lad, I used them to get the hours I needed for my drivers license. They assigned me an old Asian guy who always wore huge sunglasses and bragged that he was a former DMV tester and he was the best. Okay cool. The guy would have me pull over and start explaining things with pen and paper. Very slowly. Was he just slow and careful or was he dragging out the time? Hmmm. Then he would do the exact same thing my next lesson. Literally exact. As in, explain the same thing he explained last week. So does that mean I should just give you the same check I gave you last week since you taught me nothing new? He would then have me drive to places and he'd get out and buy a drink. Normally not a problem since I'm still learning how to drive, except he literally took 20 minutes to get his drink. I guess that's not as bad as him FALLING ASLEEP though. That's right, he fell asleep at LEAST 3 times while I was driving. And not just a nod either, but full on eyes closed asleep (is that what the sunglasses are for?). Now this was when I was a spineless teenager and didn't learn to speak up for myself. But if I was in this situation again, you bet I would've fired him on the spot. In the end, I got the hours I needed for my license, but learned almost nothing useful from him. Skip this place. Please. For your own good.
