This IS the beginning of the European History section . It goes from Ancient Greece to The Battle of Waterloo in two shelves ......

This is a much needed , overdue review , but a difficult one to write , as this once magnificent library has gone so frighteningly downhill over the last 20 years due to awful management dovetailed with a combination of public indifference and ignorance . Most people take libraries for granted , as if they manage themselves , but having served as a trustee for another local library , I am well aware that decisions made by directors , reference librarians and library boards are what make for huge differences in what is offered to the tax paying public . LIBRARIES WITHIN A SIX MILE RADIUS THAT ARE EVEN EVEN ONE FOURTH THE SIZE OF FARMINGDALE HAVE THREE OR FOUR TIMES THE SIZE OF ITS SCIENCE , ART AND HISTORY HOLDINGS ( check Plainedge , Wantagh , Seaford , Bethpage , Plainview , Hisksville ) ! Empty shelves are what characterize this visually stunning , physically comfortable building . Farmingdale Library is a " school district library " , which means that although it has a separate tax levy and elected board , the boundaries and polity of the district are identical with Farmingdale School District ; this is all the more reason why residents should be outraged at how horribly their library has been mismanaged . The set policy I was provided with by one senior reference librarian was that if a book had not circulated in three years , it would be removed and donated to venues that provided free books to other countries . But most of these books cost upwards of $30 , and every penny , taxpayer's money ! I took a lot of time last evening ( (4/13/22 ) to provide photographs illustrating what you will really see ...and not see....here . Please take a look , and pardon the glare from the ceiling lights ( as with most libraries , Farmingdale is certainly well lit ) . POSTSCRIPT : The photos did not upload in proper order , History , Fine Art and Science should be first , contrasted with the large SCi Fi , Manga and Mystery collection . There was no room left for my photograph of the huge Cooking section ( of which the library is very proud ) , the immaculate lavatory , the soaring roof or the beautiful basement display area , but again , the empty shelves are my only reason for having taken many hours to inform you , the public , about the reality of Farmingdale Public Library . I do hope this review rallies some public indignation over the gross mismanagement that has long characterized what was once the finest gem of a library within a 15 mile radius , Port Washington having been the only one north of Merrick Road equaling Farmingdale when this modern building first opened . THIS POSTING IS ABSOLUTELY A PUBLIC SERVICE , there being no issues at all with the patient and considerate ladies employed at the circulation desk .

One of the best libraries I have been in. Many community services. You should also check out the Library of Things.

Excellent selection of DVDs and children's material are located here, with a beautiful garden sitting area, as well as many "quiet" study areas.

Very disturbed to hear about the current plans to allocate all of the fiction to the first floor…read moreand move non-fiction to the second floor. Are there going to be workspaces, computers and copy machines up there as well, or do we have to keep taking our reference books up and down the stairs to work? This is not helpful for study. And to use taxpayer money to hire a company to do this is just plain wasteful, when that money could be spent on purchasing quality reading and study material. As for the decimation of the music and history collections, that is just a disgrace. Major decisions like these should be voted on by the community. I have lived in Plainedge for over 40 years and I have never seen the library in worse shape.

Out of the whole community , only 102 people have given this once great library a thumbs up on…read moreFacebook . What does that say ? I have loved this place for almost 50 years , but the decision of the present director to allow its exceptional classical music collection to be gutted , along with much of its history holdings , breaks my heart . I pray that the board will wake up and prevent the gutting of Plainedge's incomparable classic literature collection ( Jane Austen to Hemingway ) . While it is understood that space is not infinite , destroying the proud legacy of previous directors and staff is no way to serve the community or build one's own legacy . Libraries have traditionally been conservators of the best in our culture , quiet retreats as well as active workplaces . I do hope the Library Board wakes up !

My son really wanted his Captain Underpants book that he has wanted for a long time. 3 minutes is more than enough time to check out quickly one fictional book. Closing before proper closing time is just completely inappropriate. Never go to this library I am warning you now. Massapequa library is only a 5 minute drive from Seaford library and is much better quality and satisfies their citizens. Please never go to this library. I warn you

There are tables near the computers where you can do some work and a few places to sit within the book stacks. The staff is friendly and helpful as they know most of the patrons by name. The crown jewel of this library is downstairs - the children's department is excellent. From babies to teens they have a great collection of books and an awesome toy area for the younger kids. The children's librarians are excellent and they run a ton of different programs for all age groups. I give the basic library 3 stars and the children's library 5 stars for a 4 star average. If you want a great library to bring your kids then Seaford is for you!

And the 2nd floor, although it's not specifically a quiet floor, is usually quiet enough for me to not need headphones. Also, because there are 3 floors, I am almost always guaranteed to find a free table. There are over 30 tables throughout the library (not including cubicles). They also have a little eating area on the first floor which is great if you plan on being there for an extended period of time/during a meal time. They have some snacks you can buy there as well. You can eat non odorous snack foods in the library, but if you have a sandwich or got food delivered, you need to eat in the cafeteria area. Overall, this is my absolute favorite library. Plus all the staff has been very kind to me and super helpful. 10/10 would recommend if you need a quiet place to study for the day!
