I just had a beef brisket sandwich that was swimming in so much fat that I felt sort of ill afterwards. It was great quality meat, and the sandwich was presented and made very well. The counter guy was very nice and gave me sides of two different BBQ sauces to try. All great, but the meat. The meat was SO so fatty. I can hear you saying "hey, dude, brisket is pretty fatty!" And yes, yes, it is. I've had it before many times. But this was just SO much more fatty. Like, fat literally running down all over my hands as I was eating it. There was a pool of grease, no exaggeration, 1/4" deep in the bottom of the basket when all was said and done. I'm looking at another review complaining about dry brisket, and maybe they've overcorrected? I don't know. I've been to FarmEats before on a few occasions and had different things, and I think the common theme is "more is more". Get something smoked? It will be *really* smoked. Get a fatty brisket? We stood just a few feet away from the three employees at the counter, and not one of them acknowledged us -- no greeting, no "we'll be right with you," nothing. We waited for about 10 minutes before deciding to leave. I understand that restaurants can get busy, but basic customer service and communication go a long way. I got there early and wasn't disappointed. Ordered the pulled pork sandwich with baked beans. Pork was tasty (just a touch dry). Sauce was great and the baked beans could have been some of the most interesting I've ever had. I will most likely do a platter next time the bun was a little too soft and fell apart. FarmEats BBQ gets kudos for their 100% grass fed, locally sourced meats. And their location is a nifty little restaurant on the main drag of Irvington, near the Hudson (and train station). The owner is also very friendly and inviting. He's really doing his best to provide a pleasant dining experience in every respect, and I appreciate this dedication. However, the food is inconsistent. The ribs are small but fantastic, as is the mac & cheese. The collard greens are also noteworthy. But the brisket was lacking. It was dry and shredded and not worth the $16 (per half pound). It felt like I was being served the scraps that would normally be used in chili or on top of a hotdog. The pungent smoke flavor on the chicken was also not to my liking. I think the owner should also serve some actual paper plates, rather than small cardboard trays, which are difficult to use without spilling. Nonetheless, it's hard not to like FarmEats (overall) due to the upbeat vibe and friendly atmosphere. I suspect that weekends may be a good time to visit this restaurant if you're in the area. I also suspect that some of his sandwiches and burgers may be very good. If you're in Irvington, give FarmEats a try but keep your expectations reasonable. read more

I report, you decide. First off, we ordered the chili from the small bites and the menu literally says "our chili paired perfectly with our cornbread". Then I pay in cash and the cashier hands me short change and I said "wasn't this $6.50?" And she said "yeah but I don't have the change." So I guess do with that what you will. The chili comes and I asked about the cornbread and she said "no it doesn't come with it. It's a suggestion". In my opinion, your menu should SAY that, but it doesn't. It literally says "our beef and pork chili paired perfectly with our cornbread". Like if it's a suggestion then add the phrase "add a perfect pairing with cornbread for $x". The chili tasted burned and like it was sitting for a few hours. This was disappointing on multiple fronts and I won't be back. read more

so I really do try to never give one star. But this was really not a good experience. I've been trying to go to this place for a couple weeks, but the website always says "out of stock" on all the desireable items, even if you refresh the page RIGHT at noon when the place opens. So today I finally decided I'd just call the place and see if that's really the case. I call, and I will say, the owner is very nice. He put aside a pound of burnt ends and a pound of pastrami for me. Roll up to the place, nice little storefront with a few tables, a freezer for frozen meats, and a fridge for drinks. So all that was good. But the price was really out of line - 62 bucks for what I ordered. Okay, it's allegedly farm to table, ethically sourced, etc. Great. If it's good, no problem, I'm happy to pay a premium for slightly less destructive meat practices. But it wasn't good, so yes problem. The burnt ends weren't burnt? Just soft, flavorless pork belly. I like fatty cuts, that's no problem. But there was no flavor beyond fat, no crispiness, so a total miss on the texture, and overall just not what I felt like I ordered. The pastrami had the opposite problem - dry as hell. Nice smoke on it, and the flavor wasn't bad, but completely lacking in fat. I tried it with a little of the mustard that our nice owner provided - I guess that moistened it a bit, but I don't really like mustard. I'm not a believer in condiments being a neccesity for good BBQ - good BBQ meats should stand on their own. I write this review not to slam the restaurant - as I said, the owner was nice and the space was cute. But I do think potential customers should have an accurate sense of what you're trading your hard-earned dollars for. read more

I hate to give a one star review, especially because the owner/ manager is very nice but I think this place needs a reality check and customers have the right to know what they are getting if they come here. We patiently waited 20min to order and another 40min for our food to come out. When it finally did it was not in good condition/quality. Our "fries" were stale, over fried and burnt. The mac n' cheese had green mold on it. There were huge fat caps on the pork ribs and the chicken wings were dry. The sauces tasted old and rotten. The food could be good here but there's a HUGE quality control problem. Most of the food was not eatable. I do not leave these reviews lightly but the staff here is clearly in way over their head and it's not fair for paying customers. The owner of the shop was in smoking meats and despite the restaurant being closed he welcomed us in and made us two delicious and gigantic pulled pork sandwiches. The pork was mouthwatering and the spicy bbq sauce was a nice addition. They also have. Good selection of local craft beers, including one on tap. On paper this place seems amazing. It replaced one of my favorite BBQ places in Westchester, Revenge BBQ. Clearly the owner never ate at Revenge BBQ. Before we start with the bad, let's discuss the good. I had high hopes and ordered almost one of every item on the menu for dinner with my family. The Good - Great sourcing of meat which is grass fed and finished. - NYS based animals. - owner was present at the establishment The Bad - ribs that lacked bones, were dry, and extremely greasy - pulled pork which was over cooked and dry - brisket which was over cooked and dry as well - pork belly burnt ends were literally burnt - the sauce was basically ketchup. It was horrible. The owner should purchase either Bone Sucking Sauce or visit Whole Foods and get Organic Memphis Madness or Kansas City Love and make sauce based on that taste. - the order left off an item and forced me to drive back 20 min to get it. The owner didn't even offer me anything to apologize. - I also mentioned to the owner that I noticed the St Louis "ribs" did not have bones and was told sometimes this was the case from the butcher. What kind of non-sense is this? Overall it was a disaster. I would maybe try to give them a year and see if they get a new cook and the bbq improves but overall this is worse than Dallas BBQ. Whoever reviewed this place early on lied or clearly doesn't know bbq well except for the one reviewer who mentioned that the sauce is bad and the chef should try out new sauce. Exactly. But it was worse. I ended up tossing the leftover bbq. This was a first time ever. Just to show my BBQ seriousness. When my family went away for a weekend w/o me, I bought ribs and BBQ from a bbq place and eat them for every meal for 10 meals in a row (even breakfast I had brisket and ribs). It was awesome. Sure I probably shortened my life by a few years but damn was it good. So being so disappointed by this place was depressing. So sad. Skip this place and go to Tarrytown's Pik Nik BBQ. The pastrami sandwich was very good. The roll was tasty and fresh, but the roll is not the right shape for this sandwich as it is too thick and the width does not have enough surface area. The pastrami is smoked properly and the meat is tender The cole slaw is very good and the Mac & cheese has the right amount of gooeyness and seasoning, but the Mac was a little soft. I eat a lot of BBQ, and make more than my share in my home smoker. This food was about the worst food in general, I have ever eaten. BBQ or not, it was just BAD! The inside is small but they have some outdoor seating as well. The inside was really loud and I think it was kitchen noises. I remember having to speak really loudly multiple times to talk to my bf despite being one of two groups inside. We ordered 3 different 1/4 lbs of pulled pork, pulled beef, and pork belly. I liked the pulled pork best and so did my bf. We ordered the sloppy Joe Mac n cheese. I loved the Mac n cheese but could have done without the sloppy Joe portion. My bf loved both parts. We ordered the garlic bacon smoked potatoes and I didn't like these at all. I was expecting more of a fry consistently or something crispy at least but these were more of a soggy mess. My bf also didn't love these. I ordered a cornbread as well and it definitely didn't seem fresh and was a bit hard but did taste okay. My bf got the petunias red ale that he enjoyed. They have some meat in a cooler inside you can purchase which is kind of cool. Overall I didn't love my experience here, but I did see a really good looking sandwich come out when I was leaving so I'd be willing to give it another shot. read more

A couple of days ago we ordered online takeout for lunch. The process worked smoothly and the guys behind the counter were as sweet as could be. We got the pulled pork sandwich, pulled beef sandwich, smoked chicken, slaw, potato salad, and collard greens. As you might expect from their pedigree the meat was fantastic (the owners also run a grass fed/pasture raised butchery). Great buns on the sandwiches and the quality of the veg (slaw, potato salad, and greens) was also first rate. The problem is in the spicing - or more precisely the lack thereof. Thankfully, we ate at a home so we could correct. The slaw and collards badly needed acid and salt. Far, far worse were the BBQ sauces. There was an orange one and a red one and both were insipid - the orange kind of like a mild version of thousand island dressing and the red kind of like a finely chopped red mild salsa. I strongly encourage the owners to travel around and try some BBQ joints (or at least buy some of the more interesting bottled BBQ sauces out there). In a perfect world they would carry North Carolina (vinegar based), South Carolina (mustard based), Texas Hot (balanced with heat), Texas Mild (balanced w/o heat), and Kansas City (molasses based sweet and tangy). Though North Carolina is my favorite (and the granddaddy of American BBQ) they could get away with just offering a good Texas Hot and Texas Mild - their meat is that good. For the moment, I encourage you to buy from them and bring your own salt, pepper, vinegar, and favorite BBQ sauce. Perhaps in the future that won't be necessary. read more

They have a very unique spin on burnt ends that are absolutely amazing and worth the trip from NYC. So unique in fact I've no idea why they even call them that because they aren't even close to burnt, much less even dried out. The owner told me the burnt end would be crispy and they were. I would describe them more as a crispy burnt end and not traditional "burnt end". I agree with last reviewer. Delicious! I went there really because I needed change of a $10 and decided to just go for the chili. It was time to eat anyway and it was inexpensive enough. Chili is normally ground meat so I expected that. Well not here. There were chunks of meat... Mmmm so good. It was not oily or full of salt either. It tasted more like a variety of spices as a base with a few beans... so delicious. Then I went over to Roctoberfest down at the waterfront and they had a stand there too. Wow!
