By far the best place to get meat in the area. The guys behind the counter weigh up fresh meet and wrap it nice and tight. The large selection is on display and you choose the cuts that you want. Their produce section is always fresh and well cared for. I am almost always guaranteed quality produce (juice, crisp, no bruises) with each individual item. Prices throughout the store are reasonable and relatively inexpensive compared to another large Iowa grocery store chain. Finally, one of the best perks of the store....at checkout you don't have to unload! Cashier unloads, scans, bagger puts bags in cart, wheels groceries out to your car, and loads them in your car!!!!! YES!!! A couple of side notes.... *Fareway is closed on Sundays. *Weekends have large influx of local high school workers. As a former high school grocery store worker....please be patient as these youngsters are just learning the ropes of a job and responsibility. :) read more

Fareway is like the smaller, but equally delightful cousin of Hy-Vee in the Iowa City area! They've got a really great meat selection and some solid produce, though less than Hy-Vee. Their prices on meat are often better than Hy-Vee and it's equally as good! The cheese selection is good, not great and they've got a relatively small, but sufficient produce section. They've got a small wine and beer section, but have 90% of everything you're interested in. The checkers are super friendly and I'm always impressed that Chivalry is not dead at Fareway as the gentlemen checkers always help the ladies with their groceries and carry them out to their cars. Truly a place that will go above and beyond for customers! Great place to stop in for groceries and we tend to have better luck with them when stopping for a specific meal rather than shopping for the week - either way though, a place to check out! read more

The meat counter is something to write home to mom about. Not only do they have a wide selection of quality meat for reasonable prices, but their staff is extremely helpful and knowledgeable. It's a great place to go if you are looking for ideas to try something new. The store itself is pretty small, so there are definitely limitations to what products they offer. Though I often need to go elsewhere when I am looking to cook more complex dishes, this is my primary grocery store for all of the bare essentials. I only have eyes for one thing in this store, and that's the meat counter. You won't find pre-packaged cuts that have been sitting around for days. No, this is a straight-up, counter-only butcher service. And, boy, what service. You get one person helping you. You. Just you. No rush. No pressure (unless you do that to yourself). And, even better, you get good, friendly Iowa service. Meat the way you want. Cuts the way you want. In fact, on my last visit, I asked for something very specific and they were happy to oblige. No eye rolling. No acting as if it was an inconvenience. It was as if I was in customer service heaven. Will I be back? You bet your chicken wings. read more

Most of the grocery store gets about 3-4 stars, but the meat counter alone is with its weight in gold and bumps the entire grocery store up to 5 stars! They will get you any cut of meat, special order anything, special cut anything, help you find comparable cuts, etc. It is really outstanding. The rest of the grocery store is fine. They honor coupons from any store. Though they don't carry as many brands, you can generally find what you need. Freezer case is small, and I would say the fruits and veggies that they don't buy locally aren't that great. Service is always outstanding -- the kids who work there are really nice, will take your cart out and load the groceries for you if you need it. They are a family store and are not open on Sunday or major holidays -- something I find really nice, even if it is a little inconvenient. It's the only grocery store that we have in the area so far. They are not as cheap as Hyvee or Walmart but their meat counter is the best! Their meat is always fresh and yummy. Brats are awesome in the summer. Wish they were open on Sunday and closed sometime during the week instead. The people there are very nice as well. read more

Fareway has become my main source of grocery shopping due to its close proximity to home. As a staunch diy-er, it has taken some getting use to in regards to the friendly youngsters that carry your groceries out to the car. I can see where this job would become problematic, especially if you are a bright-eyed bushy-tailed highschool girl loading up three 30 packs of some grown man's MGD. I have seriously tried to push my own cart out of the store and load up my car by myself (ala five year old in the elevator screeching ' i wanna press the button'), but no dice. I guess that's just the fair way. Their prices are reasonable, however, hit your local co-op for items like TVP, and vegan delicacies. read more

Farewy is for MEAT!Your can't get better..fresher meat the way you want it. ..ANYWHERE within 100 miles of my hometown of Cedar Rapids,Ia!!! I can even call them up and get custom cuts the next day! Being from Texas originally....I LOVE that I can call and order chili grind and pick it up the next day! Their meat is SO PRETTY AND FRESH...I want to just go by when I don't have money JUST to look at the meat case!!! LOL Being 6'6" and 320lbs...sometimes I get off work and want a 2in thick boneless Ribeye...and they cut it for me! Oh...and not to forget-you have GOT to try some of their ham spread!!I have been ALL over the world....this ham spread ROCKS!!!! Smooth-smokey....AWESOME STUFF!!!Go there just for THIS! Sliced deli meat....OOHH...take some money with you! Great PEOPLE...great service.The old time greet you and serve you! GOD I love this place!!! Great prices! Tonight I went in to get some ground turkey and the line was HUGE! I saw a gentleman that looked like one of the butchers out away from the counter and asked him a question about whether there was already pre-packed ground turkey in another cooler (so I didn't have to wait in-line). He said it was only frozen but would be happy to get some ground turkey for me right then & there. I felt bad about getting pushed ahead in line but what a great way to end a shopping trip. Awesome company with awesome customer service. We have always enjoyed Fareway Food Stores from our time living in Iowa and we continue to shop there on our return trips to visit family. We had a small issue with a product and they took care of us better than any grocery store I have been to. We also learned that we can order our favorite cuts of meat online and have them shipped to us in Colorado. It is nice to see that in a world of lowered expectations and sub par service there is still a company that goes above and beyond to take care of their customers big or small. They have a good meat counter.... but watch out for mismarked grocery sales... the grocery manager states "you must read the fine print which is everywhere nowdays"... "it was not displayed." Secondly while going to the check out line you cannot pay for two different purchases using the same credit card. I never had a problem like this with other businesses. read more

Horrible customer service!!! Employees are always talking with each other and not paying attention to what they are doing. Today an employee was complaining they were scheduled for saturday when they had asked for it off. Save that for your breaks when you want to complain!!! My checker was so worried about that I should of put my money away because she nearly knocked it out of my hand when she turned around after their conversation.....I hate this store - hopefully we can get a Hyvee in North Liberty - always more than great customer service there. read more
