The people brought in at the time they were going to do inventory were nasty and outspoken to an employee while she was helping a customer. Snide remarks aren't to be said to employee's; especially in front of customers. The present manager really doesn't seem to do alot and misses alot of work due to illness, etc. We go to Riverside or Wellman Dollar Generals instead of the one in Kalona. Well worth the extra mileage. It seems when they do get good employees they are not treated fairly so they quit.

I had the pleasure of meeting a few of them and even walking away with a beautiful piece from one of them, Chris Sell. There is a parking lot right outside the door and a ramp to support accessibility. If you like the the antiquing experience of digging for new finds, you'll like this store. Piles of things haphazardly on shelves and piled on the floor in front of them. Many items had slight imperfections, breaks and flaws- so make sure to check them over. My mom almost bought a bell before she realized it didn't have the all important hanging piece that makes it an actual bell, and I was looking at glass perfume bottles before I noticed the tips were chipped or they didn't spray. There is a variety of items, everything from Native American goods to figurines to newer dishes (Rae Dunn, Fiestaware, etc.) I did find a neat vintage suitcase in good condition! All in all, a decent place to spend some time if you are in town.

We had my 8 month old daughter in a stroller and my 2 year old niece was walking and being watched very closely not only by myself but also by my parents. As soon as we came in the door the clerk at the desk began eyeing us as if we were doing something wrong. There were strands of colored beads hanging from a board that caught my nieces eye. She walked over and said "pretty" and lightly touched them. Within seconds the clerk behind the desk said "I'm going to have to ask you to hold that one" in a very snide manner. We are frequent fliers in Kalona and The Pink Begonia is a shop that we always try to hit but needless to say that will be changing. We will not go back and the staff/owners of the establishment might consider how they approach patrons with young children. Especially when the young children are well behaved and doing NOTHING wrong.
