Before the town of Ponoka was named, it was Siding 14 of the Calgary-Edmonton Railway Company. The name of the brewery celebrates Alberta railway heritage. So cool! I stopped in to do some tasting and fill my growler. If you forget your growler, they sell not only growlers but they also have howlers which are a scaled down versions of a growler. They have cans kept in a cooler if you looking to buy cold beer. You can also have a pint of your favorite beer on tap if that is more your style. The ingredients are locally grown and sourced. Siding 14 is proud to talk about our their beer's journey from Field to Glass. The tasting room is large, and well decorated. The staff was very friendly and inviting. One of the ladies had just started and didn't have a whole ton of product knowledge, but the other employee did, and all my questions were answered. I did a flight taster and picked 4 different brews to try. All were very good. My absolute favorite taster was the Southern Express: Taking Your Minutes, which was a coffee infused stout. Such a good combination! I ended up with a growler of Pullman Pale Ale. A nice easy drinking pale ale. If passing by on highway 2, I highly recommend stopping in at Siding 14 Brewing. Solo Liquor isn't a very big liquor store, like Coop or Safeway, so the selection is smaller, but it isn't as small as some of the other liquor stores in town (and there are quite few liquor stores in Leduc). Prices seems okay compared to other places I've been to, but of course that depends on what type of liquor you are buying. My bottle of Spanish Red Wine (because I was making tinto verano) was $12. It wasn't the best wine I've had, but not the worst either. I usually shop at Safeway because of Airmiles or Coop because of the selection, but for convenience Solo Liquor is nice. Prices are good even if the selection is small. If I have another bad day at work I'll be back here again, purchasing a bigger bottle of wine.

Fifteen minutes (or so) south of the city makes Leduc feel more like a suburb and very much a part of the greater Edmonton area. It didn't take me much convincing to jump in the car when I heard that a little cafe was home to the Best Dessert 2024 as named by EDify Magazine. What delicious secrets were being kept in Leduc and how could I taste them?? Step one is to drive yourself to Leduc, which I did on a Saturday morning. While nearby, I haven't spent a whole lot of time in Leduc and found myself pleasantly surprised when the navigation took me to a quaint and cute small-town-style main street area. I really don't think that I'd ever been there before. Sweet little independent shops lined both sides of the street, lending to an idyllic pedestrian experience. Shopping areas like these always feel good to stroll through. Leduc Coffee Shop is located within two other stores; Magpies Collection and Playing For Keeps Toys. So don't get confused when you enter into a retail space; home decor and gifts on the left and children's toys on the right. Head to the back of the store and keep going until you find yourself surrounded by bistro tables and can smell the coffee. The space is cozy and cafe-like with chocolate-coloured walls and pieces of local art as decoration. I noted that each table was adorned with a vase of fresh flowers - a lovely touch. I also noticed a very adorable China cabinet filled with antique cups and saucers. The idea is that you can choose your own teacup to use, select your tea of choice, and then sit down to enjoy! What a beautiful idea that only adds to the experience! I was surprised by how large the menu is - the whole thing is posted right on the wall and it's huge both in physical size and in terms of content. In the end, the offerings include; drinks, eats, and sweets n treats. If you're looking for visual guidance most of the food items are on display in the glass case, which is helpful. I knew that I wanted to order a coffee-based beverage - it is a coffee shop after all - and I was delighted to find a special "Winter Drinks" menu. I am someone who loves a seasonal beverage, to the point of ordering off of these types of menus almost exclusively. I just like trying new things and enjoying flavours that compliment the season. This menu included six different choices, each sounding perfectly appropriate for the winter. The Gingerbread Spiced Mocha (Espresso, white chocolate, topped with whip cream & cinnamon) stood out to me, which I ordered in the small size. The girl at the counter was pleasant and got to work on preparing our drinks and eats. The drink looked like everything that I wanted it to be (AKA more like dessert than coffee) but unfortunately the flavour didn't really hit the mark for me. It mostly just tasted like a mediocre, watered down cup of coffee and didn't deliver on all of the gingerbread and spice and mocha that was promised. It just seemed like this coffee was supposed to have a lot of exciting stuff going on and I felt disappointed as I sipped it. The food menu includes a whole array of sandwiches that look really appetizing - many on croissants or bagels. And each sandwich is served with a side of corn chips which is something that I can totally get behind! I would recommend taking a look in the case and choosing whatever appears the most delicious on that particular day. However, I was visiting for one item and one item only: the Orange Bun ($3.50). This is the current best dessert in the Edmonton area and I couldn't wait to try it. These golden twirly rounds are baked in-house from scratch using real butter. The orange buns are served warm and seem to be a member of the cinnamon roll family. I know that this isn't a popular opinion but I'm not much of a cinnamon roll fan (unless we're talking about the ones at Sugarbowl, in which case I love them). This, however, is not a cinnamon roll. The homemade dough is hand-stretched every morning and the freshness is evident in every bite. There's a gooey mix of orange zest and coconut within every warm layer, bringing a sweet and unique flavour all its own. I loved this comforting bun, like something that a grandma would make. The flavour of the dough itself was almost the best part because it wasn't too sweet and it held the orange and coconut together so well. An absolute delight! I totally understand why this orange bun is on the foodie radar. It's wonderful that a little cafe like this, off the beaten path, is getting some notice. The food is the highlight at Leduc Coffee Shop but it would be nice if the coffee beverages were up to the same level. Delivering every bit the cozy cafe experience, this is the type of space that you'll be happy to spend some time in.

Ah the Co-op liquor store…read more There are a lot of liquor stores in Leduc. Like I think there must be a bylaw to have 1 liquor store per 20 people or something ridiculous because you can't drive down any main road in Leduc, without running into a liquor store at some point. Normally I like to go to Safeway, just because they offer Airmiles and have a good selection, but my new choice for a liquor store in Leduc is the Co-op liquor store. It's located west of the common on Deer Valley Drive in a little strip mall (complete with a nail salon; Leduc also has a lot of those). Co-op liquor store doesn't offer airmiles, but if you are a local co-op member you can give them your card number and you'll get back some money at the end of the year. I wouldn't say Co-op is super cheap for liquor, some of their selection is a bit pricey (depending on what you're looking at), but for the most part the prices are comparable to most other liquor stores out there. What I really like about Co-op is their selection. For Leduc they probably have the best liquor selection, and I can often find special or limited edition flavours here, moreso than at other liquor stores. On my last visit I picked up a bottle of cinnamon vanilla Baileys. Yum.They also have a good size selection of wines and a pretty large beer and cooler cooler. I also noticed, at the back of the wine section, there's a little wine cooler fridge that lets you sample wines by pushing a button. Most are about $1 per glass, so it's a good way to try before you buy. The other thing I like about Co-op is the staff. They're friendly and will ask if you need any help finding anything, but aren't stalking your every move and being super pushy...good thing. When I came here with my parents to buy some liquor my mom was talking to my dad about how cute the Santa boot wine holders on display were. Out of nowhere the cashier was like, "here you can have this one." So, that was kind of nice. I mean it was after Christmas, and I'm sure they were trying to get rid of the holders, but the cashier didn't have to give one to my mom for free. It was just a totally nice, and unexpected gesture. For the great selection, staff, and pretty reasonable prices I'll definitely be back to the Co-op Liquor store in Leduc.
