Muto Construction - The scuffed up roof

    Muto Construction

Muto Construction is my go-to Contractor for large and small projects…read more Over the years they have done several additions and renovations for us. Their prices are very reasonable and their team satisfied all of our needs. Dillon and Lisa were responsible for the last small project (a clam bulkhead door). It is superior to the normal steel bulkhead doors and looks beautiful. It was scheduled and performed quickly with great skill and courtesy. Everything a homeowner could ask for.

We wish our story was similar to the rest. We spoke with both Dillon and Jasen before signing a…read morecontract for a metal roof. We told them we had two priorities, 1) roof longevity, and 2) to have the older section of the house super well-insulated before we put on a permanent metal roof. They told us the metal roof has a 50-year life and warranty, and that they have a spray foam insulation expert who's the best, and uses "forms" on the exterior to prevent any spray foam from adhering to the inside building materials, which would otherwise make future renovations challenging. What happened was quite different. A very young person came to install the spray foam, and when foam started spraying through cracks into our interior bedroom and into the under-eave closets, we were left scrambling to stop it. No one on the crew knew about "forms" and we wound up spending days removing foam from our walls and floors and had to toss out our bed linens and some of our clothing. At the end of the insulation day, we noticed the spray truck had left but there was plenty of room for more insulation. We assumed they weren't done and would return later or the next day to finish. Jasen came by while we were out, and decided it was adequate. He had the crew close up the roof which shut down our one opportunity to super insulate the roof. There was no rain in the forecast and the amount installed doesn't meet building code. Our roof is now featured on the Muto website (without asking us), but what is not featured are the scratches in the protective coating that is supposed to ensure longevity of the material. These scratches were made by a skeleton crew while installing the ridge boards and chimney flashing. Despite both Dillon and Jasen saying they've done metal roofs for 20 years, their most experienced roofer said this was the first time he had done metal chimney flashing. Upon probing Jasen about specific previous jobs, he described how they'd done metal edges, or "eyelashes" on roofs for a long time. We should have realized their inexperience at the outset when they couldn't provide photos of other completed metal roofs, but we trusted that the online reviews reflected well on their integrity. In June we sent Jasen photos of the scratches his crew inadvertently made on the roof and he said he'd come by to look and would reach out to the manufacturer and get back to us with our options. He flew a drone over the house 3 months ago to take images of the entire roof, but never told us what the manufacturer said could be done. We've sent two reminders and have heard nothing. We fear there's no way to repair the protective coating, short of replacing the scratched roofing panels. We don't regret installing a metal roof but if we end up seeing early deterioration on the sections his crew damaged and he doesn't take responsibility, then we'll have serious regrets. At the end of our job we were only given a warranty from the materials manufacturer, and when we objected given the sales pitch and the high cost of the roof, Muto pulled together a more comprehensive warranty that includes their workmanship. This has yet to be honored. On the positive side, Muto's crews work long and hard days. They were considerate, cleaned at the end of each day, and deserve all the credit others have described on this site. At no charge, Muto also replaced four window screens that they had sprayed with foam insulation and addressed other damage to the inside ceilings from the roofing job. If you have an asphalt or shingled roof that needs replacing, Muto could be an excellent choice. We cannot recommend them for metal roofs or for work below the roofline given our experience.
