Some of the urchins and sea stars looked in bad shape. I've also been told before that sea stars are very sensitive and their suction cups are easily damaged, not to mention repeated stress can be deadly to them. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and I enjoyed my visit as a solo adult.

It offers two floors of galleries , exhibits and displays . The museum also offers interactive activities for both kids and adults like a museum scavenger hunt and activities in the museum courtyard. On the day we visited I was able to use indigo to dye a small planter and then plant a tomato seed in the planter . Nice , clean bathrooms and free parking . Plan to spend at least an hour or so here depending on how much you read and any activities you do .

A. and Josephine Poe. Mr. Poe owned Poe Brick Company. The house is on the National Register of Historic Places. The house is currently getting some much needed maintenance and painting done so make sure to check in advance if it will be open the day you want to visit. The guided tour takes about an hour. The house is a Victorian Style and built from a kit. The wrap around porch and the intricate detailing outside is impressive. The inside of the house is in great condition and has tall ceilings; wide doors and the woodwork is very impressive. It gives a glimpse into early 20th century life. The house has two staircases one for the family and another for the servants. The servants were provided living quarters. The kitchen is detached from the house as the oven was on all day. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful house.

I'm not a big history buff, so I breezed through in less than 10 minutes, but found it fits in perfectly for a small town on the water like Southport. It also helps that it's right behind the visitors center and just off the core of the historic business district of Southport. I'd recommend a visit if you had some free time in Southport or if you're interested in the maritime history of the area. There's a small gift shop near the entrance and adjacent restrooms.

While driving home on Hwy 17 going through Georgetown I saw a sign that said Rice Museum. Yippee . Next thing I know we are in this historic section. The Rice Museum has many steps, and I have a bad back and hip right now so we could not go on the tour but we did get to look around the gift shop area. The gentleman working this shop/museum was so nice and friendly. I bought my rice and he made sure I was aware of how to store it....in the freezer. Who would have thought? (2 lb bag $14.95 and a 1 lb bag 10.95) They also have a yellow and a brown rice. The whole area is cute. If you are driving through pull off and stop and look around. You will be delighted.

I really can't believe how well everything was laid out, pictures, information and more. We spent a little more than an hour in the museum. Then he took us into the large room where he spoke to us about all the displays from the different wars. There was a map on the wall from Nam and I showed my wife where i was. I discussed with the owner and he told us some stories about the vets that go there. They raise money to help vets and have meals there. My wife and I bought a couple of things from their store. Plenty of parking for all sizes of RV's and I would recommend going here even with children. Look up and see a Cessna crop duster hanging from the ceiling. If you are a vet or not make sure you see his displays and hear his stories.

This is as historical as it gets in the Sandhills and I enjoy it every time I see it. From their website: The Shaw House is typical of the antebellum houses which followed the cabins of the early Sandhills settlers. It is less elaborate than the seacoast plantations and has the charm and sturdy simplicity which was characteristic of the Scottish families who settled in this region. The interior is highlighted by fine detail on two hand-carved fireplace mantels of unusual beauty, and by many outstanding early examples of Moore County pottery and "plain-style" pine furniture. A wing was added to the house in the mid-1800s and a kitchen was added sometime in the 1920s. Charles C. Shaw, a first-generation Scottish settler, acquired 2,500 acres and built the house around 1820. The date of 1842 on the chimney is thought to have been the year that the front porch and the two attached "travelers' rooms" were added. One of his 12 children, Charles Washington Shaw, inherited the property and lived in the house, becoming the first mayor of Southern Pines in 1887. The house remained in the Shaw family until it was acquired in 1946 by the newly formed Moore County Historical Association in a grassroots effort to ensure its preservation.
