I forgot to ask what brand oatmilk they use... my fault since I am particular. It has a somewhat chalky feel/taste. I just looked that up. It can be caused by several things:1. Brand of oatmilk, 2. Barista blend yes/no, 3. Temp too high on oatmilk, or 4. Oatmilk not shaken or sediment turning powder on bottom of container. Interesting reading. Anyway, I would come back if I lived here... maybe explore what brand they are using... the setting is idyllic!

The Robeson County Museum is located in Downtown Lumberton, NC. Parking is available on the street…read moreor in the parking lot directly across the street. Admission is free, but they accept donations. Operating hours are limited, so check the schedule ahead of time. The museum is located inside a 1908 railway express station, which adds to the area's history. The building retains some of its charm even though it was renovated. There are still the brick walls and rooms that house the exhibits. Docents will guide you through the museum and the themed rooms. Scott was my docent. I like that the exhibits were well labeled and that similar items were kept together. There were medical, aviation, military and natural resource rooms. The industries in the area were agricultural, cotton and tobacco. There is a mini replica of a tobacco curing barn. The top of it comes off so you can see the details of how the building would have looked, even the tiered poles where the tobacco would have hung. This is where I learned of the three individuals on the America 250 mural, as they have memorabilia from pioneer aviator Ida Van Smith. Malcom McLean is also in the museum, as he invented the current shipping containers. He is known as the "Father of Containerization" for his role in transforming global trade. Thomas Oxendine is also honored here as he was both a Lumbee Indian and the first Native American to be commissioned as a Navy pilot. James D. McRacken has a small display here as well. He is known as the "Savior of Mayenne" for giving up his life to save a bridge and a town in France during WWII. You will also find a 100-year-old cash register. The cash register had a drawer for each employee per shift. Vintage Mt Dew bottles are another highlight. Lumberton is to have saved Mt. Dew. The Minges family stood behind the product and convinced Pepsi to bottle it, refined the soda and created a slogan. Ed Allen's bike is a unique item in the museum. He used to ride around town with items like jumper cables to help neighbors in need. The medical room has an exam table, medical instruments, apothecary jars, and X-ray tubes. Shark teeth are in the geological history room. Sharks can lose 50,000 teeth in a lifetime. This is why they think that Lumberton was once underwater. The teeth came from the Lumber River. Some of these teeth are from a Megalodon. A 1,000-year-old canoe was pulled from the Lumber River. It is the oldest of its kind in North Carolina. The museum grounds have some garden space, and from the museum porch, you can see the railroad tracks. The porch even has a scale that would have been used to weigh heavy loads that arrived by train. Robeson County was my 95th county in North Carolina to visit. If you are looking to learn about North Carolina history and the role Robeson County played, this is the museum to check out. The museum is well done, with excellent exhibits and a friendly, genuine staff.

From the moment we walked in, they came across as cold, arrogant, and completely uninterested in the people keeping their business open. No smile, no welcome, no warmth. Instead, the atmosphere felt tense, as if customers were an inconvenience rather than guests. Ironically, most of the staff were genuinely pleasant and friendly. Unfortunately, that wasn't true of the family member working there, whose attitude was just as hostile. It seems the culture starts at the top, and it shows. The saddest part is that this area is full of wonderful wineries where you're treated like you're appreciated. Those owners are welcoming, personable, and grateful for your business. There's simply no reason to spend your time or money at a place where you're made to feel unwelcome. Great hospitality costs nothing. Sadly, it's something this winery seems unwilling to provide. We won't be back, and I'd encourage others to support the many nearby wineries that understand customer service and know how to make visitors feel welcome.

Toni, our server, was very nice and understanding when we told her the fish from the fish and chips order just wasn't very good. According to the eater, it was "too fishy tasting," and the texture was different than typical deep fried fish. My son-in-law had the steak tips, and he cleaned his plate, so I'm guessing they were good. I had the Po' Boy sandwich, the third one I've had in the last few weeks!! Mine was good, but instead of a hoagie-like bun, it came on hamburger buns, so not quite as big as I thought it'd be. Still pretty good, though! The sweet tater fries were excellent!

All of the items in the museum were donated by local citizens, many by the family members of the volunteers who started it and keep it running. This means that if you want a personal tour these folks are thrilled to oblige, taking things out of the cases sometimes to show you small details, and telling you interesting tidbits or anecdotes you never would have guessed about the history of this area. Mrs. Betty is usually around on Tuesdays and I think she must know the history of every person who has passed through Fair Bluff since it was founded in the 1700s, and of every single item in that museum. A train runs through a replica of the town overhead and there are a number of objects you can touch and examine- personally the old dental chair and equipment creeps me out and my favorite cases are the ones from the 1900s to 50s because each item spurs a fascinating history lesson straight from the lives of the curators... e.g. "Well, during the depression... Back before we bought a tractor for the farm.... My daddy would use this strange contraption for this.. The men knew their wives would be mad if they didn't come home with some of these seed bag patterns that matched so they could sew these types of dresses... During rationing, we'd trade this for that..." Seriously, even if you are not much of one for history / museums, it's a treat. Ask to see the old fire truck.
