All of the items in the museum were donated by local citizens, many by the family members of the volunteers who started it and keep it running. This means that if you want a personal tour these folks are thrilled to oblige, taking things out of the cases sometimes to show you small details, and telling you interesting tidbits or anecdotes you never would have guessed about the history of this area. Mrs. Betty is usually around on Tuesdays and I think she must know the history of every person who has passed through Fair Bluff since it was founded in the 1700s, and of every single item in that museum. A train runs through a replica of the town overhead and there are a number of objects you can touch and examine- personally the old dental chair and equipment creeps me out and my favorite cases are the ones from the 1900s to 50s because each item spurs a fascinating history lesson straight from the lives of the curators... e.g. "Well, during the depression... Back before we bought a tractor for the farm.... My daddy would use this strange contraption for this.. The men knew their wives would be mad if they didn't come home with some of these seed bag patterns that matched so they could sew these types of dresses... During rationing, we'd trade this for that..." Seriously, even if you are not much of one for history / museums, it's a treat. Ask to see the old fire truck.

Located just a quarter mile south of I-95 on South Carolina Highway 38, this marker has a small…read morespace for parking and a view. There is a "historical marker ahead" sign and you shouldn't miss the hulking shape of the machinery it points out. The marker reads, "This cotton press, built in 1798 according to tradition, is thought by many to be the oldest in existence. It was first owned and used by John Bethea, III, and later by Henry Berry. Powered by oxen or mules rotating the beam to tighten the press, it was rendered obsolete by modern machinery. A Berry descendant moved it to this site about 1948 to preserve it." The marker was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It had been built in 1798 for bailing ginned cotton and is made of pegged and doweled oak. Turning the screw (powered by mules) compressed the cotton into a wooden frame to form a bale. A very clever piece of machinery, all built by hand well prior to modern power tools. Except for minor repairs of the base and roof, it is still the original materials and is the only press of this era in South Carolina. The library space inside downstairs has kids section, meeting room, new arrival books, non fiction, books for sale on honor system. Upstairs has the South Carolina room which is the history area with microfiche machines. In addition there is a small art gallery, public computers, study rooms, newspapers. I came here to get library card so could use Libby app for audio books. The employee I spoke to was very pleasant in explaining the library set up.

I've stayed in Ritz that bored me compared to this opulent experience at the Rosewood Manor. My husband and I stumbled across Rosewood while looking for a way to celebrate our anniversary and set off some fireworks in our relationship. Thank goodness we found Gary. Driving up to a dimly lit paradise at sunset, greeted by a glass of wine and a wonderful ray of sunshine, Donna, was a good start. We were exhausted and hadn't been having a good week. The mood changed instantly when arriving. The atmosphere is flawless. You feel at home, except better. The house is breathtaking. Gary, the owner, is a brilliant and accommodating host. His attention to detail pulls together the whole experience. Not only is it a remarkable home to begin with, but the way it has been dressed is the key. You can have a beautiful home and a lot of money...and still have no taste. Gary has impeccable taste. Now when it comes to his precious antiques, an outstanding collection of marvelous artwork and to top it all off, he's a gourmet chef... it's safe to say he knows what he's doing. He's also a walking encyclopedia. Our stay was extended due to car trouble. Thank you, Jesus. Gary continued to accommodate us by letting us stay two more unexpected nights, and helped us find a mechanic. He cooked multiple breathtaking meals, that we are still craving. He actually changed breakfast for us in our home. Guests now ask us where we got all these amazing ideas. We of course say "Gary." After a day of great conversation, and lounging by the pool, we would go to sleep in the most comfortable bed my husband and I have ever slept in. Every night we would say "something has got to happen... it can't all be perfect." The following evening Gary and Donna made us an exquisite anniversary dinner. Finally, I said "it's all perfect." Around every corner is a surprise, and a pleasant one at that. There's always something new to learn or a story to be heard. My family and I are already planning a summer trip to go visit Dr. Chef and Miss Donna. While I did take several photos, they aren't photos I would post. You need to go see for yourself how truly magnetic and affluent a weekend away can be. I would rather drive hours out of my way to stay here, than at any hotel. On a scale of one to ten, Rosewood Manor is a strong one billion.

This well-kept marker sits in front of the current Wilson High School. The small print indicates…read morethat it was erected by the Wilson High School Alumni Association, Inc., 2010. The grounds near the marker are in good shape and it's right in front of what looks like a well maintained and successful educational institution. The marker is on two sides. Here's what it says, front and back: Wilson School, later Wilson High School, was the first public school in Florence, and stood here from 1866 to 1906. At first a private school for black children, it was established by the New England Branch of the Freedmen´s Union Commission and operated by the Freedmen´s Bureau. Thomas C. Cox, its first principal, later served as Darlington County sheriff. The school became a public school after the S.C. Constitution of 1868 authorized a system of free public schools. Rev. Joshua E. Wilson (1844-1915), a Methodist minister, was an early principal of what was long called "the Colored Graded School." It was most likely named Wilson School for him. The school on this site, a frame building, was torn down in 1906 to make way for Central School. A new Wilson School was built on Athens Street. Wilson High School was on Athens Street 1906-1956 and on North Irby Street 1956-1982. It has been on Old Marion Highway since 1982.

The Florence Cinco de Mayo Festival is held every year in Florence, SC on or around May 5th…read more Regardless of what you may think, it's not a festival celebrating people sinking a jar of Duke's mayo. It's a celebration of the Mexican victory over the French in the Battle of Puebla. It's odd that it's more of a celebration in the U.S. than it is in Mexico. I guess we just alway look for something to celebrate. The one in Florence is on the 100 block of Dargon Street and features numerous food trucks, live entertainment, children's fun zone, a Chihuahua costume contest and Chihuahua race. Of course beer is a available as well. This festival mark the beginning of Florence After Five where a block party is held in the same location the final Friday of every month throughout the summer. The proceeds for Cinco de Mayo Fiesta benefit Habitat for Humanity.
