The Japanese architect who designed this building is extraordinary having won every architectural award in the world, and the Richard Serra sculpture alone is worth spending some time with. Olga's weaving is currently on display, and it is incredible. If you're a textile art person, put this on your list. And, fun fact, she's still weaving in Bogota, Columbia at 94 years old. This isn't a place you rush through. You actually get to stand there, look at something beautiful and let your brain be quiet for a minute. There are no plagues. Your eyes see the art first and you can access the explanation pamphlets at the entrance of each gallery. Spring Church, a permanent outside exhibit, is also a lovely relic that shouldn't be missed. Bring your camera and get creative.

This is also another free museum! It can seem intimidating especially for us since we had our very inquisitive toddler with us. His voice echoed through and bounced off the walls but art is for everyone! So we continued walking through as my toddler commented on many things he saw lol There were two active floors and two outside installations that were across the street. The ones outside were interesting as it was a garden and a chapel covered in vines. It was peaceful, even with the small buzz of a bee going by. Traffic also isn't prevalent in this area so it really makes it serene!

Upon arriving my friend and I walked in and noticed that all the people from gallery night were obviously here as well. There must have been 50 people in the front room alone! As I began browsing I saw such unique pieces of artwork and caught myself staring at some for what felt like hours. I was honestly lost in his artwork! We made our way through the gallery discovering pieces of art on every wall. The vibe was so casual and the crowd was just great. I really enjoyed the artwork I saw as well as the interactions I had with some of the crowd. I know I want to go back another day when it isn't so crowded so that I can explore the gallery again.

Located in Lafayette Square, Forrest Gallery is a jewel. The space is small but has an expansive…read morefeel, featuring stained glass details, a sparkling crystal chandelier, and an array of landscape paintings by the gallery's owner, Barbara Forrest. In addition to strikingly rendered landscapes, the gallery features jewelry and ceramic pieces, all invitingly exhibited and fairly priced. When I visited Barbara was not present but her husband was on site. I enjoyed hearing about the specific inspirations behind each of the artworks and plans for future work. Many of the landscapes are rooted to nature and the artist is currently at work on a variety of scenes of St. Louis to commemorate the city's 250th anniversary. One thing that I noticed upon entering the gallery is a book featuring prints of landmarks - The Gateway Arch, Fox Theatre, Forest Park, Busch Stadium, and many others - from which customers can select to build their own, customized triptychs. Prints are available in a variety of formats- from minis to larger prints and framed/matted or unframed. The primary medium is watercolor, although one of the paintings on display features special, Japanese paper that lends an almost quiltlike effect to the composition. The level of detail is striking, in some cases arresting, and invites the viewer to become immersed in the subject. I was drawn to a watercolor of Lafayette Square houses in a row. The frame and mat perfectly offset the painting and make it one-of-a-kind. For those unable to make it to the gallery, or who want to get a feel for the works on offer before visiting, I recommend the artist's web site as a good starting point.

Such beautiful art -…read more- - - - - - - August, 2026 Visit We wanted to explore one afternoon and selected the SLU Art Museum and we're glad we did. We started on the third floor, the top floor, the one with religious art; the positioning at the top is similar to the reason some churches / cathedrals (churches with the seat of the bishop) are tall... to guide our sight, our minds, toward heaven. This top floor has wonderful art clearly inspired by the Divine; as St. Augustine wrote and spoke... "our souls are restless until they rest in the Lord..." There is much truth in that. There is also much truth in God's infinite love for each of us, and much truth in that there is beauty in holiness, and there is even beauty that comes from persecution, and in Jesus' sacrifice for us. The art here demonstrates some of all of these points. In addition, there are items from Catholic Churches, items used to celebrate the sacrament of Communion in the holy sacrifice of the Mass; people use gold and other items to be as reverent as possible in our devotion to Jesus, and the pieces here reflect that reverence, in their own beauty, and in how the museum presents them for visitors to see. In one room, on a classroom blackboard / chalkboard, one sees Latin and English, noting "A beautiful oratorial style, my close Brutus, is simply nothing more than the expression of noble thought in exquisite diction." True, and inspiring. This floor is someplace everyone should visit, to help each of us appreciate the Love God has of each of us. The second floor has secular, comteporary art. The glass items from Dale Chihuly beautifully present images similar to nature, to God's Creation, and at least for me, were by far the art that made the strongest impression, in particular: "Persian, Cobalt Blue with Red Lip Wrap Series, 1994" "Baghdad Blue Persian Set with Russet Lip Wrap" (1996) Thank you to the staff who provides us the change to see such beautiful art!!

On the second floor is the contemporary art, and on the third floor, the level I spend the most time on, is the traditional and religious art, as well as the Jesuit historical artifacts and sets. When I say sets, I mean that they have "classrooms," "bedrooms," etc. indicating what the life of a Jesuit seminarian might have been like, up to and including some Latin lessons on a prop blackboard.
