I was bummed but my experience. First tattoo, I was really nervous. I got it done and I noticed it was uneven, but I thought, "I'm not an expert, he knows what he's doing, right?" And then it was over. Afterward, my sister (who is covered in tattoos) told me it looked awful. The lines aren't all fully connected and they are uneven. When I emailed the artist about it, he pointed out out that no one whatsoever has ever contacted him for a fix. At that point, I didn't want him holding a needle to me again. I was really disappointed with my experience here, especially after reading such stellar reviews. On the plus side, got my nose pierced here, and Chloe was great. read more

It is a little intimidating walking into a tattoo shop you've never been to, but I was immediately greeted and checked in upon arrival. The workers were very friendly. Phil was very attentive and patient when drawing up my tattoo. I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted for my design, and he worked with me until we came up with something I liked. Once the design was done, the tattoo itself only took about an hour (maybe less) and was a breeze. I would say the only downside to this shop is the location unfortunately. Yesss I just popped my tattoo cherry with Walter (aka nametaken_tattooer) at self-inflicted studios. I came in to make an appointment a week ago and left a deposit of $50. I also sent an email about the ink quality and they replied quickly, letting me know that their inks are high quality and vegan. They most often use Eternal Ink, Dynamic, and Fusion. Deposits are not refundable. The process was pleasant, seamless, quick, yet detailed. Walter really cares about his clients and the quality of work he delivers. He is also a sweet family man. My small tattoo consists of two Chinese characters and it took a total of 40 minutes. He told me it will take roughly an hour so I felt better that it was over sooner. I am definitely coming back. Thank you. My tattoo is healing very quickly and I bled very little. Super content. P.s. if you park in the streets, make sure to pay the meter. You'll get a fine if you don't. read more

First off I want to give a shout out to Phil Wahby. He is not only a great tattoo artist, but he is a good person and genuinely cares about his work and his craft. You can see in the end result. My inner ankle was a rough rough spot but he talked me through it and we got it done, and is one of my most well done pieces I have still. Since then I've gone back for a total of three by Phil and it will be more. It's easy to book and saturdays are walk ins for Phil :) I had my dice done here as well by a different artist which I love. The pricing is so reasonable and fair for the quality of work that you will get. After reading multiple Yelp reviews and seeing their ratings, we decided to try them out. What an awesome choice. We called ahead and they said they could do 3 walk ins. We didn't have very big tattoos. They are very organized and clean. We had Panda and Jeff as our artists. They did amazing jobs! We all walked away pleased. Parking can be a little tricky but that is what you get when you are downtown. If we are ever back in town we will definitely use them again. read more

This place was awesome. My best friend and I wanted to get matching tattoos, but our idea for them was a little odd, so I worried about finding an artist that could do our idea justice and make the tattoo a great memory that my now-long-distance best friend and I could treasure. We didn't make an appointment, just came in as walk-ins, but everyone was super welcoming. We told the guy up front our idea for the tattoos, and he told us that a guy named Nate would love to do them for us and he to us they'd be $70. Nate was super nice and talkative, and he joked with us about the little soot sprites we were getting the entire time we were there. After the tattoos were done, he instructed us on properly caring for them, and he was very clear. Both my best friend and I tipped Nate personally, $10 each, and he followed us back up front and told the guy to only charge us $50. It goes to show what appreciation can do :) My best friend and I love our tattoos. They're a reminder of a friendship that has lasted 15 years, and hopefully will last for many more, as well as representing something special and odd about ourselves. I have to echo the reviewer below me, I absolutely cannot say enough good things about this studio. In 2021 I went on a little bit of what I would consider a, "tattoo spree," I was working through a lot of trauma and getting my tattoos really helped the healing process. That being said, I have been to a majority of the popular studios in the larger St. Louis and St. Charles County area pretty recently. Time, and time again, I will absolutely recommend Self Inflicted Downtown to anyone, over any other shop in the area. I have gotten several pieces here, they are absolutely the cleanest, and best healed pieces of artwork I have. In the future, I will not be going anywhere else. The energy is always absolutely wonderful, the artists are kind, talented, and informative, absolutely love them. I will say, my experiences at Downtown are not at all comparable to the St. Peters location. I would HIGHLY recommend making the drive to downtown if you live a little farther out, you will not regret it. read more

I scheduled an appointment in advance as I would be in from out of town and wanted to get a matching tattoo with my fiance while we were on our trip. Of all the shops in St. Louis, I am so happy I ended up here and could not be happier with my artist Zach/Panda! He is young but definitely talented and I would recommend you check him out. I could write a lot more about my experience but I'll just say that from start to finish, from my first phone call to our final tattoo, we were treated very nicely and we got exactly what we were looking for. As for the price, this is not a "cheap" tattoo shop. If you're looking for a cheap tattoo, go elsewhere. I have 13 tattoos and I paid about what I would have expected for this one, based on past experiences. Maybe a little more. They always listen to my stories. My first tattoo was from Berk I came in wanting something absolutely unrealistic for a first tattoo and he talked to me and we decided on something that represented my late grandpa and uncle and it was beautiful and so meaningful. To date I believe I have a tattoo from every artist that is currently there and they are all great I get so many compliments. They always go above and beyond. Came here for my first tattoo and couldn't be happier. I'd had plenty of people warn me about getting ripped off as a newbie, and walking into this shop, I had about everything working against me - it was me and my 60+ year old mom, both from out-of-town, both getting our first tattoos. We had a rough idea and some pics of what we wanted, but needed some guidance on design, placement... you know, "little" stuff like that. It couldn't have been a better experience. Mikah Webb was amazing. After a quick chat, he worked up a couple different options for us. We consulted again, then he came back with stencils that were dead-on perfect. His work was fast and clean; we'd planned on +2hrs, but Mikah had us both done in about an hour and a half. He's got a great eye and does beautiful line and shading work. Whole thing was super comfortable and easy. Plus I couldn't believe the price for such gorgeous work. Crazy reasonable. 10/10 ... can't wait to come back. read more

This is the best tattoo shop in St. Louis, surpassing the long heralded Iron Age in the Loop. The staff has some of the best tattoo artists in the city, and they can customize designs for you based off of very limited specifications or vague and abstract ideas. They charge by the hour, every artist has a different rate - the atmosphere is laid back, the studio looks fantastic (especially after they installed their new windowfront). Ian Arseneau is my tattoo guy now after he drew up the sickest tattoo for me after I came in and said, "I want a mechanical cardinal". He mocked something up, it looked great, I wanted to change a few things and he was really easy to work with - and also... the tattoo artists is the expert - when I said I wanted something changed he told me: hey, I think it'll look better like this. I recently traveled from Austin, TX to St. Louis, MO for an anthropology conference. While visiting I decided I wanted a new tattoo to commemorate the trip. Before flying over I called a couple of places around town, but was not having luck finding someone I wanted to work with - most places were not friendly or helpful at all over the phone. When I got to St. Louis I decided I would give it one more shot, So, I walked the 15 blocks to visit Self Inflicted. As soon as I walked in I was SO glad none of the other places I previously tried worked out. The artists were very friendly and professional, and the shop was clean and welcoming. I wanted a honeybee (state insect of MO!) on my arm and Tom was willing to work on me even with the short notice. After hearing me out he did his own research on the morphological characteristics of honeybees and drew me up a stencil...which was amazing! He even added a really cool watercolor-like background. So far it is healing perfectly. Redness went down overnight, and after a day it is already looking perfect and smooth - so far it doesn't seem like there will be any trouble spots. This is likely because Tom was attentive and is good at what he does. All that being said....if you want a kick-ass, colorful, and stylish tattoo, go see Tom. He is worth every cent. What really impresses me about this studio is that each tattoo and piercing artist there is multifaceted, having talents in painting, sculpting and more. I haven't gotten a tattoo from this shop yet though I will. I had my tounge and industrial bar done by the piercer here and both are great a year later. I cannot remember the guys name but he knows what he's doing and is clean and professional. There's no other piercer I would use! My friend has gotten countless piercings from him and all his work is top notch and pretty cheap! I plan to get my first tattoo by Xmas because the corresponding super hero tattoos my friend and her bf got look great! They were done by Zach and turned out great! This is by far the best shop in town for percings (personal experience as well as friends experience) and the tattoo artists know what they are doing (friends experience) I wouldn't recommend any other shop and when people ask where I got my percings I am happy to let them know and tell them to check these guys out! read more
