I had such a great experience yesterday, I have to Yelp about it. I'm a huge scaredy cat of getting my hair done because I've had some bad experiences. I've never been one of those people who has a person they always go to because.. I actually don't know why, just non committal that way. You'd think hair would be something to commit to, but I just never found a hair dresser who was available when I was or nearby, or didn't charge an arm and a leg, or whatever the case was, it just never happened. So I've resorted to home highlighting when my hair gets dishwatery colored, and forcing my boyfriend to trim my hair in the bathroom, yeesh. Yesterday I got desperate after seeing that my hair was looking raggedy and uneven, so started browsing Yelp for a place that takes online appointments for the same day. I psych myself out of going at all if it's too far in advance and I have too much time to think of all the reasons not to go. Found Face It and decided it was time for me to stop leaning on my old way and finally face it (ha!). Dropped in after work and before my workout class and met the lovely Nicole. This girl is awesome. She made me feel so pretty: complimenting how healthy my hair is and dissuading me from getting a pricey dye job because the color is nice and natural. She dry cut my hair to the length I wanted (long bob) and then straightened it so I could see the real length. I loved this whole experience; quick so I was able to get to my class, Nicole was super friendly, the salon is right off Castro Station. Easy peasy, highly recommend! read more

THEY F*ED UP MY EYEBROWS SO BAD, IT BROUGHT ME TO TEARS AND I WAS LITERALLY CRYING. PICTURE IN REVIEW. NOTE THAT I STOPPED HER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WAXING, BECAUSE I COULD TELL THAT SHE WAS THINNING IT OUT. SHE ASKED ME TO LET HER EVEN THEM OUT BUT I TOLD HER TO PUT DOWN THE WAX. IMAGINE THE DAMAGE SHE WOULD HAVE DONE IF I DID NOT STOP HER. I joined the gym around the corner, and decided to give this place a try for some emergency eyebrow/lip wax. 4.5 stars on Yelp, what could go wrong? Well basically, EVERYTHING. I walk in and there are two woman at the counter. One of them was my esthetician, I think her name was Janny or something like that. ( I might be wrong with the name, but for the pursposes of this review, her name will be Janny.) The receptionist made a point of telling me, as I walked away for my services, how amazing Janny was. In retrospect that remark now pisses me off even more after everything that went down. Janny takes me upstairs to the waxing room. As we are walking in, she asks if I want a clean up or shaping. I mention that I need a clean up but might need a little shaping for the fuzzies on the top of my brow. I told her 2 or 3 times to make sure to NOT THIN OUT MY EYEBROWS. I was very adamant about this, explaining to her that my face is very round and I do not want thin eyebrows. She does my lip first- everything went fine there. Then she starts on my brows. Things start feeling weird. I start feeling wax on places that I know there should not be wax. I actually stop her after she rips off some wax and i feel some hairs go with it that should not have gone. I ask her to stop and to give me a mirror so I could see what she is doing. She actually has the audacity to try to proceed with the waxing AFTER i told her to stop. She refused to give me a mirror, I actually had to jump out of the room across to a big mirror outside of the room. I see the f*ing disaster number she just pulled on my face, and demand that I speak to her manager. I'm waiting downstairs, the manager comes down. She asks me what she can do to fix the problem. At this point, I crying and telling her that I need her to remove the glump of wax the esthetician left on most of my right eyebrow, and to give me something to fix or fill the eyebrows in until they grow back. The manager takes me upstairs to the esthetician room. Janny is still following us closely, I had to turn around and ask her to stay out of this because I'm just about ready to blow up at her. Manager gives me a used old N.Y.C. eyebrow pencil in Black. I ask her if she has anything different, and she tells me no, this is all she can give me. Oh, I did get a coupon for one free brow wax, to come back when I grow them out. The Manager said she will fix them-LOL. She tried to tell me that would be 3 weeks from now, but its going to take much longer than three weeks to grow this mess out. I am just flabbergasted and will definitely not be back. read more

I received a gift certificate for a facial hear back in April. I've been meaning to use it and just yesterday, saw where it was located in the Castro. So today was my errand, get laundry done, grocery shop, workout, shower, etc., day. I've only worked out, showered and will be picking up groceries soon. After I took a shower, I figured maybe I'll try and trek to the Castro to get a facial before I have to go pick up my little Zipcar for my grocery trip. I dash out of the shower and ring these folks wondering if I could get in today. The guy said they closed at 7pm and said it was okay if I came in at 4:30 for a "Facial on the go!" facial. Sweet sauce. I checked the lovely Next Bus stupid thing online to see when my bus would arrive. I also had to factor in that I'd transfer AND that the freakin' Outside Lands traffic was an added delay issue. I hopped on the bus and the stupid festival traffic delayed my trip. I got off at Divisidaro to get the 24 to get to Castro, but was none in sight. So I hauled ass (been hauling ass walking the last 2 days because of that little Outside Lands festival ... bastards.) and arrive at exactly 4:30pm! Patrick greeted me and led me upstairs for my facial. He asked if I had any issues or concerns regarding my skin and said that once he looked at my skin under those high beam lights, he'd give me an idea on what's going on. After changing, he came in and assessed my skin under the bright light and said that apart from the usual clogging, the skin looked well. He explained all the applications he applied to my face and was very gentle. He even applied a hydrating mask where he massaged my face to work in the mask because my face has been dry lately (damn Sunset District air!). I LOVE when he applied the hot towel and pressed it against my face. It's SOOOOOOOOOOO nice! I almost want to fall asleep when they do that during facials. Patrick recommended I exfoliate once a week, maybe twice if I'm feeling oily, to help with the clogging of my pores. He said that the dead skin (I'm sure you want to know all this) doesn't fall off so it gets stuck in the pores which then eventually clogs them and blackhead begin to form. Yeck! The facial was about 25 minutes long for the "On the Go!" facial, but it felt longer. That's a plus when getting anything that's meant to replenish your body and mind. You never want to feel like it goes by face because how often do get pampered (ok, me, not so much) and get to just relax?? After he was done, I met him outside. He asked how I felt (I feel awesome!) and showed me the daily exfoliate he used on my face. I paid and decided to make another appointment in a month or so for a full facial as the last time I had a full one was back in December. He had suggested it's good to get a full facial which involves extractions, 2-3 times a year and use the quick facials for regular maintenance. I can't wait to come back here to get my full facial. Patrick was super nice, and very profession. He was more than willing to answer any questions or concerns I had and wasn't trying to push me to make another appointment or to buy products like some people do. Nothing worse than a pushy person, so you won't feel guilty if you don't buy or make another appointment here. You can do walk-ins which is cool and they said they're open till 7pm on Saturday (don't know about Sundays) and stay open till 8pm during the week. Woot! The place is nice. The facial was done in a small room with dim lighting so you feel relaxed. They offer waxing, haircuts, coloring, facials and lots of ego boosting (woot). I don't know how long indoor haircuts are still going to be allowed but if they are you have the chance, get in there; you will feel safe and pampered with Helen! I've gone to a few medical appts since COVID and they take more care with their intake than doc offices do, questionnaire and temp and sanitizer (and they even spray the bottom of your shoes and have you wipe them to keep the salon clean!) I was lucky enough to be the only customer there for my haircut, very relaxing - and it actually appears like I care how I look again! read more

I've lived in SF three times for a total of 15 years since 1979, and before last year had never given this place a second thought as I passed by. Through a fortunate confluence of events, I did drop in one day to buy an Aveda product and found myself surrounded with friendly and welcoming, knowledgeable professionals. My own stylist had left the City to return to France; thus I was of course bereft and adrift as I faced the prospect of breaking-in a new stylist. (You KNOW how scary that can be!) So, as Joe was enlightening me to the specificities of products that might be good for me and commented on the quality and - at that moment - abundance of silver hair on my head; I Looked...and Leaped. And I have never looked back. Joe is an exceptional master of the cutting of hair; I was happy with his first go-through and have only been happier with each successive cut. (His dark secret is that he owned an auto-body shop for decades before switching to hair. Who knew?! "Expelliamus Stereotypes!") When Joe has been on vacation, the gently sassy Nicole (hm, I wonder how she'll take being called, "sassy") has stepped-in and performed her welcome and personal artistry. I'm telling you, one cannot go wrong, here. Seriously, Face It is an oasis of peace and quality in the Castro. The prices are eminently accessible especially for San Francisco. They gave us bullsh*t excuses, as if they're not responsible. How embarassing for us to give out these useless gifts plus we are losing out on $50 on each certificate. So Bambi has been on mission to take care of the skin and headed here for a face cream...yest you heard me "A FACE CREAM". As soon as I walked in a lady who was giving a massage to a customer directed me to the case where I can find this miracle cream which I have yet to use. So with that said I go to the register to pay and hand my ATM card to the lady at the register who gave me this look like "YOU DON'T BELONG HERE AND THIS IS NOT YOUR ATM CARD". So she slides the card and nothing happens... another slide and she said .. well it is not taking. OKAY... I just used the card 5 minutes ago to by some leather gloves down the street... That's fine I will go get cash. I exit and there is an ATM right outside so I get CASH and enter back. Now there is another person "A QUEEN of course" at the register... whom I will call "MS THING". Unfortunately at the time of this writing he has been in hiatus for a while. Helen is great at what she does. Waxing: So fast! You'll be out in record time! She is the least painful esthetician out of the 6+ I have seen, and would be a good recommendation for a first timer. Facials: Very comprehensive and relaxing Pedicures: A bit pricier than those high turnover manicure shops. Maybe it is because they use all Aveda. Very clean with lined tub and lemon slices. She also uses a brand new pumice on each customer. My boyfriend also drives here from the peninsula to get he his hair cut. There has been some turnover and he is on his 3rd stylist there, but is happy with it every time. They are usual open for a last minute appointment and believe they take walk-ins too. read more

I'm not sure why it's taken me so long to write a review but better late than never. I've been coming to this establishment for about 3 years and Helen always hooks me up with an incredible haircut. She cared for my hair when it was long and gave me a great look when it was time to lose my long locks. The staff is incredible. I love me some Nicole. I wouldn't go anywhere else. When it comes to looks/hair....do not spare - any expense. Prices are competitive but the quality is unmatched. I always leave feeling like a million bucks. My partner and I have been going to Helen for about two years for haircuts. The cost is very reasonable for the quality of cut we receive. She does a great job! And she works weekends - even Sunday! I never have to wait long to get an appointment. Review for a KGB voucher for a Spa-like Reflexology Mani & Pedi 4 stars for Ann(a) who did the Mani & Pedi, she was very detailed. The staff was nice too. 0-1 star for: - there was sadly nothing spa-like about that experience, the Nailcare space is 3 chairs pushed into a corner of the salon with a really basic nail polish selection - the process took around 2 hours (understandable since only one person does both Mani & Pedi), the chairs were not the most comfortable if sitting for 2 hours straight... - because the process took so long and I went there right after work, Anna finished at around 8.30pm when the salon closed and I believe they were ready to leave and wanted me to leave too, that said my finger nails did not have the time to dry at all and by the time I got home they were ruined. I could have gone there on a weekend as to have more time but the voucher was valid only for Mo-Th. - the cuticle tool was not the sharpest I guess because it pulled rather then cut the skin, so now I have loose parts of skin around my nails, not pretty... - the Reflexology was a basic foot (max 3min) and hand (max 1min) massage one gets at any other Nailsalon. I asked Anna about it but she did not respond, so I'm not sure if she was too tired to talk or did not understand English... - the decor (nothing spa like about it) and the music made me feel like being in a store rather then a salon - the original price for that service was supposedly $81 which is a joke if you ask me, it was a standard Mani & Pedi I usually get for $30 in my neighborhood. The voucher was $25 but they expect you to tip on the original price, so really the whole thing was not worth it and I won't come back. read more

At first, I thought it looked better but once I was in the sun, I could see it was still orange. Okay, first, let me say that "getting a pedicure" is not one of my normal day-to-day activities. My normal activities include "not shaving" or "belching." But I'm ambling through the Castro with a female friend who, excitedly, decides we're going to get pedicures. ... So, like I said, I'm not a pedicure guy. "Foot care," in my mind, is associated with "Odor Eaters" or "touch actin' Tenactin." But I'm also a good sport. We find a spa and walk in. The host was friendly and really smiley. We ask for our pedicures and are led to a pair of chairs in the back. I remove my shoes and socks (my prized Green Bay Packer socks, to be specific). The pedicurist fills a foot bath for me to soak my feet in. When my feet are good and softened, the pedicurist begins her work (and there's plenty to be done with the monster claws I've developed after years of neglect). The declawing begins. Things are clipped, sanded, scoured, rubbed, lotioned, and massaged. Very disgusting things are dug out. The nearby stylist chuckles at my lost pedicure virginity. The result? I've been admiring my feet the rest of the weekend. They're very soft, the nails are nicely rounded, and I don't think I could even cut other people when wearing sandals anymore. The whole process cost $25. I'll be wearing sandals to work a few times this week, and I might even go back for another pedicure in the future. In fact, as of late, I've started to be disgusted by the hangnails and unsightly cuticles on my fingernails. Perhaps a manicure is in store... read more

I've been a loyal customer to Face-it for many years. My friend was a stylist there for years but had left for a different job, so I went with Helen Woo, the owner. She is simply FANTASTIC. She uses 3 different styles when cutting my hair, scissors, razor and texturizing. She knows how to do everything in her salon too: Hair, facials, waxing, nails...and on and on. She also showed be about getting my lashes tinted, as it pops your eyes. Boy does that work! I have had my haircut by Helen for the past 26 years! I was so happy when she purchased Face It a few years ago as it was much more convenient than going to her other store. Face It is easily accessible by public transportation, so there is really no need to worry about parking. Helen is the ultimate pro when it comes to haircuts! She shapes the haircut to your head. She knows where to cut and how much to cut, which results in a terrific-looking haircut. For me, her haircuts last 7 weeks before I get it cut again. I've been on this 7 week cycle for two decades. If I have to extend a week, because Helen takes a vacation, no problem! The hair may be long, but still looks good! I can't vouch for any of the other employees, but I recommend Helen highly. August 2007 I want to write another review on this place because they are that good in my opinion. I was really upset when Mario left because he was my regular hair stylist. One day I was a little desperate for a haircut, so I just trusted another Face-It employee and had a nice guy named Stanley cut my hair. Well... I definitely was not disappointed!! Stanley made my hair look soooo beautiful! My hair is really really thin and he made it look fuller and thicker. I just totally loved my hair, and my boyfriend even said I should go back to Stanley. Although I'm upset Mario's gone, I'm so so happy I had Stanley cut my hair. He is now my new hair stylist. I love Face-It Salon! **************************************************************************** March 2007 I'm surprised the review below mine gave a bad rating. Before finding Face It Salon, I didn't think I could find a high quality salon that offered not only GREAT hair services but also GREAT massages, facials, and everything you can think of. I mean don't get me wrong... there are MANY salons in the city that offer all these services, but most are Asian-owned that mainly do nails and suck at massages. After getting my hair highlighted for the first time at Face It, I loooooved it!!! My hair was so beautiful!! Mario had become my new barber. He even offered me tea and cookies while my highlights were sinking in. Oh... and I can't forget the massages. Maggie gives such a reeeelllaaaaaxxxing massage...she is one of my regular masseuses. And the prices are not bad either. My only complaint is that the massage room is next to the sinks where people are getting their hair washed during haircuts. So you basically hear every conversation... a little distracting to keep peace during your massage, but then Maggie does such a WONDERFUL job that it eventually doesn't matter. So my overall grading of each service they offer: HAIRCUTS -- A HIGHLIGHTING -- A+ COLOR -- A+ MASSAGE -- A+ NAILS -- A EYEBROW WAXING -- B- CUSTOMER SERVICE -- A++!! I've only been here for their eyebrow waxing services; I'm a huge fan of Helen. I've got blonde eyebrows with hard-to-see hairs, Helen is very meticulous in a great way. Unlike some other places (*cough* *cough* Benefit's Brow Bar *cough* *cough*), she doesn't rely on trimming to get your shape. Trimming is a lazy way to give you half a solution, since it'll grow out of shape MUCH sooner than properly waxing. Helen waxes and tweezes strays and only does a tiny amount of finishing trimming at the end. She's also good on shaping brows. I've seen her the last three times I needed my brows done, and I'm sure I'll continue going--she does a great job! read more

I really liked the eyebrow wax I got at face it. my waxer was the cutest thing , very nice. My one issue though is if you are getting waxed i feel its the waxers job to remove and leftover waxy gunk that may have gotten on you. well my very nice waxer , got a lot of wax in my hair and left it on my eyebrows .party foul clean facilities. friendly staff. i will probably go back again but make sure they get that shit off my grill afterwards better. word read more

THIS PLACE ROCKS!! I was recomended by a co-worker only to meet Stanley and realize we know one another from someplace (doesn't that always happen?). Besides feeling extremely welcome he did an AMAZING job with my hair. Instead of asking what I wanted done he "took charge" (in a good way) and let me know what would be best for my hair. AN OUTSTANDING JOB. Highly recommend booking Ken for a massage - best massage I've ever had. He works wonders on my tight neck and back, and I walk out feeling energized. He was trained as a doctor in Chinese medicine where he grew up and has offered some useful tips to help me with circulation. This is not a fancy spa, but rather a hair salon. I went there a few weeks ago looking for aveda products. Ended up talking to the girl that work there, her name is Nicole I think. She's a sweet heart. Great attitude. I wanted to schedule an appointment w her. I went back a week later and I specifically told the man I wanted Nicole but the lady that runs this shop said to book with her. So I did. I wanted some highlights and a hair cut. She completely botched the highlights. Independent of what she understood I wanted what she did was not good. Her technique was wrong and resulted in several spots that didn't have any color and clear lines where the color started and ended. It was a poorly done job. Lazy and the technique was bad. She had 2 other people come in while I'm getting my color done and I had to wait for her to now finish with them before cutting my hair. When she was done with the first girl she just told me to sit in this chair covered with someone else's hair without even cleaning it first.. she did that twice. This place is dirty. And Helen, the lady that did my hair color is stuck in the 90s. Old technique, bad manners, terrible service. When I said it wasn't right and pointed out where things were wrong she didn't see it. She's bad. She didn't charge me which was nice of her but man I wasted 3 hours of my life. She tried to fix it and it made it better but not much better.Horrible place. About 3.5 years ago I moved into the Castro neighborhood and tried several salons searching for a good stylist. I'm so glad I found this salon. Helen is one of the best and certainly my favorite hair stylist I know in the bay area (lived in sunnyvale/alameda/campbell/sf). Over the last 3 years she is very consistent, versatile, and edgy when it comes to hairstyles. I can tell (compared to other stylists) that she tailors the cut to your face-shape and head-shape. I've done james dean coifs, pompadours, bieber bangs, asymmetric side-parts, wavey fringes, and now recently a high-fade cut. I get compliments on my style, especially my recent cut being the most dramatic. I haven't had her color services yet, but judging from her coworker Fuscia's ever changing hair color (platinum, blue, green, purple, pink...) I'm willing to bet she's an expert at that too. Nicole did a wonderful job with my cut and blow out today! I'm new to SF and needed to find a regular place for a cut. Tried this place out and had a great time with Nicole! She's super sweet, funny and gave me a bunch of tips on how to keep my hair healthy. They're prices are great, open on Sundays and cool with walk-ins. Over all, a great experience!
