Went today and was told I could only be there for twenty minutes so people would not have to wait outside for a long time in the heat. But, there was no one waiting outside (which I reported) and there was no one else in the store, either! And, I was not allowed to buy quarter yards of anything. The fellow said the policy had been changed to half yard minimum cuts. (Would have been nice to know before driving all the way there. Online stores may do this, but I have never run into a brick and mortar fabric shop being unwilling to cut quarter yards.) Needing many colors for a wedding quilt, I was prepared to pay the higher (50%) per yard price for less than one yard cuts, but I was not prepared to buy twice as much fabric as needed just because they changed their minds about how to sell the fabric. So, rather than sell me many quarter yard cuts, he preferred to lose my business forever. Why would anyone return to a store that treats customers like this? Okay. If you are looking for a fabric store in the Boston area that has gorgeous, tasteful, high-quality prints, brights, batiks, cottons and silks then look no further. I have visited, LITERALLY, every fabric store in the Boston area (yes, even the ones in Chinatown, they suck) and I'm here to tell you that this is as good as it gets. I could see myself making beatiful flowing a-line skirts, cute little summer blouses, and retro geometric cotton dresses with pretty much EVERY fabric in this store. Nothing else comes close to their selection, and prices are pretty reasonable. Also they are extremely helpful and friendly and will do their best to answer any questions you have. The pattern selection could be better, but oh well, you can't have it all! Seriously, skip Jo-Anne's fabric unless you're looking for something REALLY ugly. Don't be fooled by the jinky website - this place has terrific fabrics. Adorable modern prints, vintage prints, really great selection overall. I went in with my mother. I'm in my late twenties, she's in her late fifties, and we both found a ton of fabric that we loved. And the service was great - really nice people, very knowledgeable, honest, and helpful. Sometimes you go into a big craft store and they have a huge selection but the people there don't know anything about the products. This store has a good selection and the staff clearly knew a ton. Also, the prices were competitive. There was a great sale going on that day. I will definitely be coming back. read more

I sew most of my clothes on quite a tight budget, and finding attractive and affordable apparel fabrics in Boston is...quite a challenge. Sew-Low and Sewfisticated are cheap but usually pretty low quality, and mostly colors and prints that I would never wear. Gather Here has beautiful eye candy but is totally out of my price range and doesn't make apparel fabrics a priority. I finally visited Fabric Corner, and I'm totally sold. The space is medium-sized and put to good use--compact without being too terribly crowded. The service was terrific--both employees present when I visited were helpful without breathing down my neck, and also super proud of this family-owned business. What really sets Fabric Corner apart is the beautifully curated selection of fabrics. Their apparel fabrics section isn't huge, but everything I saw was of decent-to-excellent quality at a good price, with a nice balance of classic and on-trend prints and colors. Basically, everything I saw, I wanted to take home. I didn't pay too much attention to the quilting cottons and home decor fabrics (which had much larger selections), but what I saw was dreamy. Also, at least half of the store seemed to be on sale. The prices for most fabrics ranged from $11-17/yard, but everything seemed to be at least 30% off. I walked out with fabric and notions for three new dresses for around $100. Still a splurge for me, but very reasonable for what I got--a beautiful rayon, a lightweight cotton in a Mondrian-type print, and a midweight cotton jersey. read more

Great inventory! Really, some of their cottons are to die for. There's Alexander Henry as far as the eye can see. I also love the coupons (10% off full priced items almost all the time) and they often have sales of 20-30% off per yard. -1 star because they don't really carry any sewing patterns, perhaps they focus much more on quilting. Solid fabric store, a quilter's delight. Not a good place for people looking for clothing fabric really, this is much more domestic, focusing on some exquisite quilting fabrics and a nice variety of upholstery fabrics for all your home decorating wants. I got a lot of quilting ideas when I walked in here. They have an excellent wall of Japanese pattern fabrics, which aren't easy to find! read more

I'm new to sewing and stopped here as my first fabric store foray primarily because it's on a route I frequently travel. One person (I think, based on the way he phrased things, that it was the owner) was working when i walked in and popped out from the back of the store to ask if he could help me find anything. I was just looking for leftover bits to practice with and he directed me towards them; when I walked past them without noticing them, his head popped out again and he said, "Oh, you went too far! Turn around and walk back a couple of feet. (pause) Yeah, there they are!" I used to do crafting with fabric scraps and am used to random fabric bits being boring patterns in odd colors, but these were really lovely - some of the nicest patterns I've ever seen in scraps. I had anticipated just grabbing a handful of fairly random scraps and heading out, but I ended up spending a lot more time there than I'd planned, going through all the little boxes of them to see all the patterns available, and ended up picking some that I really liked. While I was browsing through the fabric scraps and the notions, a staff member came in to work and the two started amicably chatting, conversing partway across the quiet store. The owner(?) prefaced all of his comments to her with the other staff member's name, which I appreciated as it was an easy verbal cue to know when he wasn't talking to me. As a newbie, I was too shy to ask their advice about anything, but I got the feeling that they'd happily offer it if I did. In the end I left with several gorgeous large scraps of fabric, some lovely all-cotton thread, and a really nifty looking little handmade wooden needle case. The owner(?) said he was going to go in the back of the store right as I started walking up to check out, and said, "right after this" when he noticed me, walked back and checked me out, enthusing about one of the fabrics I'd picked out (something like "This is one of my favorites!"). I mentioned how I was used to ugly scraps (phrasing it more politely) and really liked the scrap selection they had, and he said that he thought that was because most stores just put out random scraps but his were the leftover bits from fabric that had sold out, thus being a selection of the most popular fabrics. When I got home and unrolled my scraps, I realized they were even bigger than I'd thought. I'm really happy with my purchases and plan to stop in here again when I need something else. By the way, in response to some of the other reviews: I'm very sensitive to chemical smells and didn't notice any odd smell in here, but perhaps I went on a day or time that the nail salon is closed. read more

When it comes to furniture, I am not a "do it yourself" kind of guy. I would much rather take the easy path and buy furniture at completion. However, my girlfriend loves to make fun gifts and furniture. Going with her to the furniture could have been a very boring experience for me. I have to say, this was about as painless as it could have been for me. The staff really seems to enjoy what they are doing. My girlfriend has trouble making decisions sometimes, the staff really helped her to pick the right fabrics for what she was trying to accomplish. Additionally, the store is not so big that it is overwhelming. Furthermore, the prices seemed very reasonable for what she got. In the end, we got fabric to make a headboard, upholster an ottoman, make stuffed elephants for kids, and mousepads for friends. Highly recommended for crafty folks looking for fabrics. read more

To say the staff is helpful is an under statement. Nancy not only helped me pick out fabric for my t-shirt quilt, she gave me lessons! She helped me create my own pattern, let me borrow her walking foot and 12 inch cutting square, consoled me when I screwed up and praised me when I came in with my new quilt! The store has so many options, reasonably priced fabric and great staff who will help you figure out what you need. I don't get to Fabric Corner very often. Without a car, it's a little bit of a hike from JP, but every time I do go there, it's a good experience. Their collection of batiks is amazing, if not a little overwhelming. They have a small collection of patterns (New Look, which are about $3, and some more expensive Amy Butler), and a wide range of fabric prices (more traditional and cheaper quilting fabric, along with more expensive fabrics like Amy Butler and Michael Miller). Lots of awesome flannel (look below the batiks) -- and not just stuff most suitable for babies. Their selection of home dec fabrics is quite good given the size of the store, and they have a bunch of sample books, so I assume they can order you anything that's not already there. They also have a large thread selection and all sorts of notions that you never knew you "needed"! But it is what happened today that convinced me to create a yelp account so that I could rave about them: I acquired some silk fabric and wanted to make a dress but was definitely not going to use polyester for the lining. Someone had suggested bemberg rayon (a.k.a. Ambience), but I had a hard time finding it around Boston, so I had come to grips with the fact that I'd probably have to pony up the money for silk or buy the rayon online without knowing for sure how the color would work with my fabric. Still, I hoped I had other options. When I called Fabric Corner to see what suggestions they had, the woman who answered the phone had the smiling-est voice I've ever heard, which put me in a wonderful mood (she has made me a customer for life). We chatted about what I was looking for, and she had a few ideas. She then said, "We also have rayon lining." "Bemberg?" I asked. When she said yes, I asked how many colors, figuring it would be just a few, and nothing to go with my weirdly colored silk. Well, she rattled off about 4 different reds/purples, a couple blues and greens, then something like, "dark brown, light brown, tan, ivory, off-white, snow white...." I stopped her before she went any further. Just that many neutrals pushed me over the edge. Seriously...did they get rid of their batiks to make room for all this rayon? ;-) Tomorrow I'm heading to Fabric Corner to check out their selection. I don't know how many colors they actually have, but I have my fingers crossed that I'll find what I need. At the very least I can thank the woman on the phone in person. read more

If there was an accessible entrance I sure as heck couldn't find it anywhere! The service was just as good as JoAnn's, perhaps a bit worse... the prices were high in my opinion for basic quilting fabrics, and I didn't find much for patterns that I liked. I wish I could give this store 7 stars for its fabulous staff, who spent a really REALLY long time with me helping me to understand quilting terms and picking out fat quarters. However, their prices are soooo high. I bought the quilting tools I needed there rather than at Jo-Ann and they were more than twice as much, even though there is a 10% off coupon on the website that I used. Also, they have the most beautiful quilting fabrics I've ever seen, but given that they START at about $10/yard, it's unlikely that I'll be buying them. They mostly have the type of fabrics used for quilting, not apparel. Apparently, they do send out coupons via their email list, which I've joined. Also, parking might be difficult at times - street parking in Lexington. I didn't have a problem. read more

Ohhhhh I'm in trouble. I just caught the sewing bug (quilting, home decor, clothing, anything at this point) and went to this store just looking for good quality quilting solids, and now I think I've found a paradise. Fabric Corner had the ENTIRE line of Robert Kauffman Kona Cotton all arranged by number/color family so it was really easy to find the perfect shades. Also spotted: a big selection of Japanese fabrics (both the gold-detailed cotton flower prints and a few that were more folksy blends), solid-feeling manly flannels that I'm going to use for a quilt for my dad (there are girly flannels too but the manly ones I had not seen offered elsewhere), tons and tons of printed quilter cottons in both traditional and modern designs all arranged nicely by color, lots of batiks, walls of notions, some Essex linen and shot cottons, and a ton of home dec that was all 50% off that day. Quilting cottons were about $10-12/yd for prints and $7/yd I think for the Kona solids which seemed fair - maybe a few dollars more than online (or a certain chain store) but I am learning how different fabrics look in person so it's worth the cost to know you're getting exactly what you want and that it's good quality. They told me to sign up for their newsletter so I can get a 40% off coupon monthly. And equally importantly - the people there were so great! They seemed truly excited to have a newbie come in and poke around for an hour-plus (not kidding) and they helped me when I wanted it and not when I didn't. They even referred me to another store in the area when I asked about classes, which I always think is a really good business practice because now I know they'll give me good advice, not just try to push a sale. I walked out with just the solids I came for plus a quarter yard I couldn't pass up, but I know I'll be back over and over. Just off Mass Ave, free street parking. read more

This has become my go-to store for quilting fabrics. They carry a great selection of batiks, Asian prints, and Kaffe Fasset prints, and a good selection of other fabrics, including some wonderful Australian fabrics. The prices are typical for an independent fabric store - around $8-11 per yard - but the key is to get on their email list. The first day of every month they send you a coupon for 40% off one cut, and that makes it worthwhile, especially if you are buying a large amount for a backing or other project. While they may not come up to you in the store to see if you need help, the people who work there are very helpful and friendly if you seek them out. read more

I really like this store. I would not really say they are a quilting store as some reviewers have mentioned, they do not cater to the small quantities or fat quarters. I love their selections of children's fabrics,and Asian fabrics. They also have some super cute flannels. I don't care about batiks which is the majority of their fabrics. The selection of Cotton fabrics for crafts or quilting is great. Since this is a small store they are pricier than JoAnn, so if you just want something cheap this is probably not the place to go, but they sell quality fabrics at good non-chain prices. They also usually have sales going on. If you join their mailing list you will get a coupon every month as well as notifications of their sales (which almost always require 1 yard minimum purchase). The staff seem to know and talk to regulars a lot, they may seem to ignore you but are willing to answer questions when you have them. read more

I had low expectations going into this store based on the other fabric shops in the area and the look of the building from the outside. I was pleasantly surprised! There are a lot of bolts in this store and a lot of home dec fabrics too. They had "designer" fabric that you can't find at JoAnn's (Amy Butler, Kaffe Fassett, etc.) and the employees were hands-off but friendly and chatty. Overall a good experience.
