This place is another hipster joke. The former restaurant "Reno's" was a real diner with good quality food for 50% of the price. This place has done nothing to change the interior but charges outrageous prices for less food than was served before. I can make better at home. Hope these hipster restaurants all go broke. read more

Was looking for somewhere to grab brunch before an optometry visit at Mt. Pleasant Optometry and I'm so glad that I did. I was able to snag a place at the counter, being alone, and bypass the line-up. I had the BBQ pulled pork bennie and a hot chocolate. This place is worth the line-up. Goddamn the bennie was good, and the potato thingy with sour cream (can't remember the name, lol). Wow! First time I have eaten a potato offering for breakfast and actually loved it in for like...ever. I have another appt in the area next weekend and guess where I'm going to try to get in for lunch? This place is dope. As for the hot chocolate, they offered a boozy whipped cream or normal. I opted for "normal," which turned out to be Nutella flavored. Ahhhhh! The hot choc itself was far more basic, but the whipped cream made it worth it. read more

Just opened and destined to become a new fave. The tomato soup is out of this world, as is the accompanying grilled cheese bread. Plenty of vegetarian and GF options. Can't wait to try the poutine (if I can), chick pea fries, onion rings, grilled cheese and breakfast (I'm the vegetarian, not the Celiac). read more

(excerpt from my food blog review, full review can be found here: http://deliciousdestinations.weebly.com/casual-chews/fable-diner) Classic diner food aside, many of the dishes that are on Fable Diner's menu are just classic, comfort foods to begin with. To start, we shared their Baked Macaroni & Cheese, a new item on their menu that was recommended to us. Mac & Cheese is my jam, so I was looking forward to trying this one. This particular version was not totally flawed - the cheese sauce, which was made up of cheddar, parmesan and swiss cheeses, was super creamy and flavourful. In all honesty, they should have stopped it right there, and if they wanted to bake it, top it with some breadcrumbs and maybe some more parmesan, throw it in the oven and voila, there's your baked Mac. However, the chefs went to great lengths for this one - the dish was baked and topped with breadcrumbs, feta cheese, and corn nuts. The feta cheese was a little off, and this is coming from someone who likes feta cheese. The flavour was too strong and frankly distracted me from the cheese sauce. But when I wasn't being distracted by the feta, the corn nuts got me: crunchy chip like chunks that were completely out of place and just ruined the overall texture. I feared that I would chip a tooth with this one. I tried a few bites of the Veggie BLT, which obviously doesn't have any bacon in it since it's veggie. But the bacon was replaced with something out of the blue - smoked shiitake mushrooms. If you've ever had any dishes with shiitake mushrooms in them, you'll know that they are slimy and slippery and just unpleasant. Biting into that in a sandwich was not a good day. The FD Burger was a standard burger that allowed you the option of a variety of add-ons ranging from $1-2 in price. We're talking basic stuff like a cheddar slice or bacon and really wacky stuff like cola onions and kimchi. I just went classic with a cheese slice in my housemade, double pattied burger that had lettuce, tomato, pickles and a special housemade sauce. There is nothing special about this burger; but then again, I'm not sure what I was expecting. However, the biggest problem that arose with this burger was the fact that the patties are cooked at medium-well. Ground beef in any kind of manifestation should always be cooked well done to avoid food poisoning. Apparently, medium-well burger patties were at one point taboo (because hello, salmonella?), but are now making a comeback as the new hip thing. I didn't notice this on the menu until afterwards. Needless to say, I had a stomach ache afterwards and felt overall very squeamish. We could potentially point fingers in a couple different places, but I think we can all agree on the undercooked ground beef. The one saving grace was the creamy tomato soup. Step aside, Campbell's, Fable has this down. A delicious little soup that is not too sour and just creamy enough to the point where it is so light. There are no words, which might be a good thing after all of the disappointment that I felt already. All the desserts and the milkshakes looked and sounded delicious, but unfortunately (or maybe not?) we were too full to try any of them, nor did we try any of their cute little cocktails. I say cute because each of the cocktails are named after a fable. I will say that the server we had was incredible, answering all of our questions and was super friendly. Also, it was super busy and the service was still very friendly and the food arrived quite promptly, so kudos to them. read more

Really great atmosphere with super friendly staff, unfortunately the kitchen doesn't get Gluten Free. They offer Udi's bread for an extra $2, however they totally don't get cross contamination, so not a good choice for Celiacs. Second time eating there this year, it's one of daughter's favorite spot, sadly got "glutened" both times. read more

Might be the best breakfast in the city. Best Huevos Rancheros I've ever had! Service is a bit slow because it's so packed and popular. Be patient and you'll have one of the best meals of your life. read more

I've been to Fable Diner a few times now and the food is a refined twist on classic comfort food. The fries are perfect. The chickpea fritters are also delicious and I'll try the chickpea burger next time. Last time I was there I had the Veg BLT (with smoked shitake schrooms) and it was nice and tasty. My only complaint was that the schrooms were chucks and kept falling out of the bread. I suggest switching it up to portobello mushrooms and slicing them lengthwise. Would hold up in the sandwich better and sorta look like bacon ;) read more

Came to Fable Diner tonight for the first time, and I was not disappointed. I had the FD Burger which, when it arrived, seemed almost too simple when I lifted the top bun - but once I took a bite I realized they've perfected the amount of condiments and toppings to a point where everything compliments each other. We also shared the tempura onions... which were BEYOND. I preferred them over the fries to be honest. The service was extremely fast, our waitress was quick and very likeable, and the interior of the diner was everything I've wanted in this space for a looong time. We've already decided to come back tomorrow for brunch. I'm in love! read more

I've been here a few times now. The amazing service and food keeps me coming back! Such a great value for the quality of food you are receiving. read more

We've been here twice now and had a great experience both times. The food is diner fare but with the same quality and farm to table approach of the original fable. The decor is modern and clean. The location is great and prices are fair. read more

Great brunch spot. Classic diner feel with a hip and modern outfit on. Service is great and food is quite enjoyable. Brunch runs me around $20 every time I come here including coffee meal and tip. Bit of a wait on weekends but it's worth it. read more

I frequent this location almost weekly and I have to say I have an incredible experience every single time. The food is delicious and the service is impeccable. This restaurant is very consistent. I am especially partial to their eggs benedict and the potato roastis you can substitute for the regular cubed potatoes. Nothing but great things to say. The servers actually now know my friend and I by name as we are there all the time. Highly recommend if you're local or visiting from out of town! You can't go wrong here. read more

Great food. Perfect portions. Well priced. Lovely staff. My go to is the sausage n egger. So simple but so good. Their little potato Rosti things are delish. Their bacon & jam and fried chicken bennies are sooooo good too. The meatloaf!!!! Ahhh! Can't go wrong read more

Great atmosphere and good food. Quick service. We ordered the coffee shake, Cobb salad and the FD burger with poutine. Order did have mistakes but manager very professional and took care of situation. Prices were not cheap but as expected. Gotta come back to try the breakfast. read more

Yum! Came here with some friends for Sunday brunch and it was delightful. We took quite a while to decide on our dishes because they all sounded so delicious - thankfully, our server was not only patient, but hung around the table giving us her advice on what to pick :) Needless to say, we were all super happy with our choices and felt that it was worth the price. Nice to finally find a trendy Vancouver restaurant that actually also has quite a few tables too. It appeared to be busy, but we didn't have to wait for a seat at all. The menu is also tweaked with the seasons, featuring seasonal ingredients and produce which is a nice touch. We'll be back! read more

Great taste POOR execution. Good service nice atmosphere. I'll be back on a not so busy Saturday. Thanks for checking on us mod!

I don't usually review after a single visit but I must say this place had all the making's of a "go to". The roast duck pancake was absolutely delicious and was definitely had the table envy. I had the pulled pork sandwich with fries as a main. The fries were crispy and the sandwich was on point. The best part of this experience was the milk shake. Don't be shy.... try one. It's going to be the best thing you do for yourself all week. Trust me. Oh and the paper spiral straw is a nice touch. That scores and enviro point! All around the atmosphere was welcoming. There is a subtle 1950's touch which i quite liked. The menu was easy and reasonable on the back pocket. The seating was a bit tight at our table but it looked like we just got the one tight spot as we were a group of 8. The service was expeditious and attentive through the experience. We were also encouraged to sign up for the glance pay app which saved each of us $10 on our bill. Can't wait to go back! read more

This was a very disappointing dining experience. I am a big fan of Fable so had high expectations regarding Fable Diner. I understand the "diner" means I will be getting more casual food but I had expected it to be slightly elevated from fast food. I ordered the breakfast sandwich and it said it came with cheddar and potatoes, so that is what I expected. What I got was a greasy fried egg on white bread with PROCESSED CHEESE, (not cheddar) and French fries. Yes, I understand French fries are technically potatoes but then why not say French fries. My husband ordered the bacon Benny and his came with a breakfast style potato so they obviously do them. My husband kindly switched "potatoes" with me but the neither of us were impressed as both were boring and unseasoned. Overall, it was very uninspiring and we won't be going back to Fable Diner, we will only be going to Fable going forward. read more

Read about the re-vamped diner location of Fable over the summer and have been looking forward to trying it. Fable has taken over the old Reno's Diner location at the base of the historic Lee Building at Main and Broadway. The interior has been completely renovated, and it's a clean, warm, inviting space with a slightly retro-diner feel. It was hopping busy when I arrived, but I was seated promptly by a friendly hostess. Service was a bit slow to start, but understandable given how crowded the restaurant was. I was craving a hamburger and was initially unsure which one to choose, as there are two on the menu: The Reno Burger is a plain single burger that comes on it's own, and the FD Burger comes with TWO patties & all kinds of trimmings with a side of fries. I didn't think I was hungry enough to tackle two patties, so I opted for the smaller Reno Burger, and added a side of fries to go with. Service was super friendly and personable. Burger was plain but tasty. My side of fries was extremely small - really just a scant handful. This was fine for me as I wasn't famished, but would have probably been disappointing to someone who had wandered in with a big appetite. My word of advice would be to think of the Reno Burger as a nice snack-like option if you're a in a burger mood but not up to eating something full-sized. If you've come in hungry, then definitely go for the FD Burger option! Since I had a bit of room left, I opted to order dessert. I decided to go for the mini-donuts, which are served with a dulce de leche caramel sauce. I waited a fairly long time for the dessert before a server checked on me. Not sure exactly what happened there, but I'm guessing my order had been forgotten/lost. My server got my order back on track & my mini-donuts arrived piping hot. Caramel dipping sauce was delicious! In the end, without me having mentioned anything about it, my server and the Manager very kindly decided to comp my dessert due to the long wait. I very much appreciated the gesture, which came completely unprompted. Since I frequent this part of town a lot, I look forward returning for future visits and trying some of the other tasty looking items on the menu. A neighbouring table was munching on a delicious looking fried chicken appetizer (it was all I could do not to swipe a piece off their plate!). They also have a lemon meringue parfait which I hope sticks around on the menu for awhile - eager to try that one too! read more

Came here for late lunch. Despite the lesser items on the menu, the selection was all great. We tried truckers breakfast and tomato soup, both were the best we ever had. ..The toilet smells good too! read more

My boyfriend and I went to this place after we had seen their website. The price was ok, so we decided to check it out. When we got there we had to wait in line for about 10 - 15. Surprisingly nobody was coordinating the line. As soon as a table were empty they would call the first person waiting and take them to the table. In our turn a guy, (with a tie) probably the person who should be coordinating the line, came up, asked how many people were in total and quickly find a sit for us. It was so nice having somebody explaining the place and telling us about the specials. He probably were busy, or during his dinner brake, but we did missed having someone up front. It is weird get in a place and wait in the line just because people in front of you are doing the same. So it was great when he materialized himself there. The service was great. A blond girl with an unsymmetrical hair (saved in one side) help us. She was so adorable and so helpful. She clearly knew everything about the menu, suggested some stuff and was very funny. I loved her. The food was fine. Not the best hamburger I ever had, but fair (I had the main one with fries). It wasn't memorable. Like, something like Tacofino's crispy chicken burrito (just an explanation what I consider memorable) that days later, after eating it, you can still feel the taste of the dish just by thinking about it. They probably have better things to try. The 4 starts are more for the service and the place itself. Beautiful decoration, clean, great services, price ok. I would go back again to try the food and maybe change my review about it. read more

Just a quick review here after dining there. Tried the Roast Duck Pancake and also the FD Burger. The duck was dry and somewhat lacking in flavor, although the kimchi is a nice addition. The burger was very meh. The patty was a decent cut of meat, but the chef put way too much salt on it, really gross. Also I didn't like the buns they use, which are what you would expect from a school bbq not a 4 star restaurant. The coconut curry soup was OK, but once again nothing special, there wasn't even a tiny bit of vegetable or even garnish to accompany it. Just very uninspiring overall. Although service with a warm smile is one of their better features. read more

This place is pretty awesome, the service was excellent and a great busy atmosphere. The brunch menu for me is better than the breakfast menu and all our food was delicious and fresh made, eggs we're perfectly to our liking. Well done Fable team, keep it up! Pricing is pretty reasonable too!! read more

Got a full egg covered in hollandaise sauce dropped on my shorts today and all they said was you get the bacon free when o wasn't even the one who ordered. I'm not saying give me a free meal but at least have the class and take a milk shake off or actually care. And this is after going 3 days in a row. Horrible experience. read more

Affordable but the food is amazing! I have discovered a little hidden treasure and will be coming back soon. The decor is nostalgic but has a modern touch ;) read more

Burger was mediocre. No lettuce, no tomato, just a small, sad onion with a tiny pickle and some "special sauce". Decor was nice and so was the waitress who served us. The food is bottom of the barrel. Even a McDonald's burger has more on it. read more

I've been living and working in this neighbourhood for nearly two years and had no idea Fable Diner was on my doorstep! Although a big place, the exterior is kind of closed off / hidden by the size of the building, so it's not obvious it's there (just making an excuse for not knowing it was there). Great space, open, light and modern. I love diners and this is one to check out. Menu small and simple but lots of must haves. Food delicious and service great. It's a great people watching spot and you can have a great view of your food being made depending on where you sit. Old school works!!! read more

I don't normally write reviews but I have tried this restaurant 3 times and all 3 times were disappointing. I went the first time because it was new and all the hype. The food was really sweet and the French toast was soggy. The second time I decided to get the handyman special and the potatoes were dry and tasteless. The 3rd time I got the vegetarian burger and it had been cooked to death and burnt. Each time I have told the server. Nothing was done. I work in the kitchen and I know they can do better than this. read more

Stopped for brunch with friends and of course there was a lineup. Fortunately, we avoided the lineup as there were three of us. Server was friendly and personable. Our order took 30 minutes to arrive which I find way too long for breakfast/brunch ordering. The food was very good though. Almost all the choices were savoury dishes and the only sweet tooth choice was the delicious Nutella French Toast. Portion sizes are smallish so in terms of value for your money you won't get it here. Given the food was so good that is why I gave this place a decent amount of stars. read more

I came here with friends. Great-looking place here! Good ambience with lots of natural light from all the windows. I ordered the gnocchi, which was extremely delicious. The pasta was cooked just right and even had a bit of crisp exterior from the pan, which I love. The veggies it was served with and the tomato sauce were perfect. The only problem was the very small portion size. I would have expected more food for $15, and I didn't feel full afterward. Still, I would eat here again. read more

Before we went here for the first time, I read and reviews and was looking forward to the fried chicken. When we got there it turned out they only offer fried chicken on the weekend. Came back the second time on the weekend and had the fried chicken and was worth coming back for. Would highly recommend having the fried chicken Benny. read more

Showed up here to an early dinner. Opted for the duck pancake and FD burger. Both did not disappoint. Kimchi was less pungent and sweeter than usual but provided a nice crunch to both dishes. It's a little pricier for diner food but there is finesse here. read more

Overall a good experience. Was able to get a seat right away. Service was friendly. Ordered the trucker breakfast. It was very good. Very tasty. Everything seemed fresh. The downside is that the portions are rather small. I feel like for a similar price you can get more food elsewhere. read more

Nice atmosphere, super friendly staff, clean bathrooms but the food was just okay. Price point was very high for the size of the meal. We were also charged for the lettuce to wrap our burgers instead of the buns. For the amount of options in Vancouver this misses the mark. read more

Went for brunch on a Sunday. Great service - friendly and coffee was never empty. Food was better than expected. Good portion sizes (read: not just filling the plate for the sake of it, which seems to be an awful brunch tradition) and well presented. Eggs were poached medium as requested. Loved the house made jam. Will definitely be back again, hopefully for a booze brunch as the cocktail menu looked fantastic. read more

Grilled cheezus was decent but my 2 egg breakfast was horrible. $8 for 2 small eggs, one piece of toast, and small piece of overdone hashbrown. Gave me the wrong eggs but I didn't want to bother changing. Not very inspiring. I don't mind paying for good food but even for a hip diner style it needs to provide better value. Also it wasn't very busy and we went around 2pm on a weekday yet they sat us in the row of very tight tables instead of the many open booths. It was only 2 of us but still would have given us a better experience l. read more
