Looking for something to do in the area, I was informed to check this brewery for a tour. Parking is in a private lot, located next to the gift shop. Tours are every 1 pm and 3 pm Monday to Saturday from June to August. Tours are every 1 pm and 3 pm Friday and Saturday from September to May. In order to get to the tour, enter the gift shop and make an immediate left up the small stairs. Despite not being a huge fan of beer, it was interesting listening to the tour and how the Matt family developed the Saranac company from the time of Prohibition! Great history to the Utica community and props to my guide who entertained us. The tour is $5 per person with children under 12 years of age are free. Be sure to swap cash for two tickets to get two full sized samples of the beers on tap or non alcoholic beverages. In addition, you can try sample cups of about 8 beers that are on tap! I tried two sample cups and kept my two tickets. The bartender was kind enough to notify that I was able to use my tickets for a future date at the bar without going through the tour again. I believe the bar inside this brewery is open until 8 PM. If in doubt, call ahead before the tour. I do recommend it!

Man, I sure do love brewery tours and this is one of the best ones I've ever been on. The brewery has so much history within its walls and the tour is really great. Tour and tastings are only $5 a person, so it's a complete steal. The tour lasts around 1 hour and you get to explore the various areas of the brewery including a really interesting area concerning the brewery during prohibition and the Matt Family who started and continue to run the brewery. We got to see an active bottling line as well and that was a blast to see in person. They truly make a ton more products than I ever knew and I had no idea that The Matt Brewing Company actually brews most of Brooklyn's beers and they were also the first place that Sam Adams had a large production made. Neat! The tour itself is worth $5 and the tasting at the end is such a huge bonus. With the tour admission, you get 2 (count 'em, 2) tickets for full pints in the tasting room. They have about 8 beers on tap and about 12-15 bottles that you can choose from too. Translation = amazing selection! Not only that, but you can sample as many as you want in addition to the 2 pints! Yay! beer heaven! This brewery is a wonderful mix of truly interesting history and great beers. Utica is not exactly a destination spot for most people, but if you're planning on driving through the area and have the time, definitely stop in and enjoy yourself for a few hours!

    Great selection

Great! Awesome beyond words. Tour was so nice. Duff was so informative and fun as a tour guide. Gave great recommendations where to get apps. The history behind this company is wonderful. The soda options were great for a non-drinker Would recommended! We go to many brew tours this was amazing

Cool brewery for Saranac beers. The bartenders were super cool and super nice. The beers were okay. Merchandise is insanely expensive. The tour is only on weekends, but it takes you through a really cool history of the place and even takes you to the speakeasy built during prohibition. Cool place to tour if you're ever in the area.

Love this brewery. Finally took the tour and it was fantastic! It was super informative and so interesting! All of their craft beers are delicious. The limited edition Blueberry Ale is so light and refreshing, perfect for summer. I love the historic location, it is really beautiful.

I came to visit the Brewery on a Friday night to see the Flaming Lips perform a concert there. Everything was great! There were no lines for the beers (ticket system). They offered about 8 different beers, all from local breweries (Saranac, Utica Club). There were tons of portajohns which made lines very small. The food line was large but it moved very quickly. I was very impressed. I tried the fried cheese curds which were excellent and also had the chicken quesadilla which was decent, but nothing special. Food prices were very cheap for a concert which made everything taste even better. It was my first time in Utica and i loved it. Also the Flaming Lips were incredible, they put on a great show.

I've been wanting to take the brewery tour ever since I turned 21, and after 14 years I've finally managed to cross it off my bucket list! Whether you like beer or not, it doesn't matter. This tour is one of the most interesting things I have ever done. There is an incredible amount of local history with in the walls, which I found fascinating. Matt's produces way more products than I ever realized, including ginger beer and sodas. The actual tour was about an hour or so, followed by a tasting. They take your through old tasting rooms, talk about the local prohibition era, bottling, fermentation and more. The tour guides are knowledgeable, fun and can answer just about every question you throw at them. Again, this tour was a blast, and i wouldn't mind doing it again. $ 5 admission.

The last time we visited family in Utica we wanted to spice up our trip, so we decided to stop in at Matt Brewing to take a tour of the complex try out some beers, as well as to pick up some Saranac beers in their coolers. When we arrived we didn't know what to expect, but when we walked in the door we were impressed by the brewery store as well as all shirts and mugs they had in stock. The building itself is very unique and the history behind this brewery was cool. We ultimately didn't have a chance to take the full tour because of our time frame, but the staff here let us walk through some of the building which was intense and gorgeous. In the end, we hope to stop here again in the future when we can take the tour and sample some more of their beers.

I have taken quite a few brewery tours. This was by far the best one. It was like being Charlie in Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The tour guide, Tom, would open a door and usher us in and it would be a new motif. I was waiting for the beer river, where I would then decide to pull an Augustus Gloop. The guide waa knowledgeable, and entertaining. For the $5 tour price yoy receive two drink tickets. Since I was driving back to Buffalo, I couldn't have two alcoholic beverages. I opted to try the Prism White Ale by Prism. It as delicious with its delicate flavors. Pretzels were on the bar to cleanse your palette. My second drink was their root beer, which just like the ginger beer, I fell in love with. I ended up buying a 6pack with 3 each of the pops. If you take any brewery tour, take this one. It's not just here is the process, it's about the traditions and the history.

Perhaps I'm a bit biased, like many of the other local folks that have reviewed the brewery. Either way, my review echoes the same message--the brewery is fabulous! It's amazing how deeply engrained this brewery has become in the local community. They have a huge presence at the annual Boilermaker 15K road race. They offer Saranac Thursdays with live music and brew during the summer months. And.. the brewery tours? They're a local tradition. From the small corner of wallpaper that's peeling in the "hall of presidents" (from the time beer was leaking from the tavern above) to the freezing cold storage cellars, everything about this tour is endearing. Try to go on a weekday during the spring or summer--when the bottling works is in full-swing. Watching the bottles go round-and-round is mesmerizing. If you're lucky (and it's the summer), you may even get a ride around the block on the trolley at the end of the tour. (I believe it's an old bread truck that they converted some time ago.. but believe me, it's a hoot!) After the tour, they lead you up into the tavern, where you get two free drinks (included in the the cost of the tour). They've got bottles and brew on tap, as well as ginger beer and root beer for the under-21 set. Be sure to check out the gift shop afterwards! Tip: Call the tour center ahead of time before showing up for a tour. The hours of the tour center differ depending on the season.

One of the very best places on earth! Such an amazing story. Cheers to the Matt family many many more generations of success!

Took a tour and tasting at the Saranac brewery. Interesting history and a large variety of products they make. Tour actually takes you through the real process (need to make sure you don't trip on large hoses in the chilling room!) Guide woman was personable, crowd we were with were reserved so she didn't have a lot to interact with. Afterwards you get to taste your choice of product in a really cool old converted house. Must do if you are in the area! They are part of a group promoting upstate beverage touring: @HeartNYBevTrail heartofnewyorkbeveragetrail.com

This was a really cool brewery tour! Our guide was a little dry, but did throw in some fun facts and a little bit of humor. Saranac is one of the largest breweries I have ever been to (Yuengling and Anheuser Busch being the biggest, of course). The bottling line was enormous. It was also cool to see the huge brew kettles and big room of fermenting tanks. I wish I gained a lot more information though. I love brewery tours for the academic aspect (because I'm a nerd like that). They talked a little bit about beer brewing (generally the basics) but didn't say anything about their soda production. The only thing they mentioned was that the soda and "club" drinks gained popularity during the Prohibition Era. The tour is $5 but you see a lot, learn a little bit, and receive two free beverage coupons. The free "samples" were generous - full pint glasses full of whatever you wanted! Beer, draft root beer, basically any of their beverages on tap or bottled. Really nice selection. The gift shop is great and has a huge selection of goods, gifts, and bottled beverages. So glad we went here!

Any other time, if you are not a regular, this place might not be for you. I've been here several times with mixed experiences. The last time I was there was a Thursday in the summer of 2024. My husband, brother and I were excited to find seats at the bar and order dinner. The bartender was a short blonde woman and there was a male bar back. The bartender did not acknowledge us for over 15 minutes. We were actively looking at the menu on our phones and talking about what we wanted to try and attempted to make eye contact with her as she walked by us with no luck. She didn't even say "I will be right with you", literally no interaction. She was very friendly with everyone else around us seeming to know exactly what they were drinking and happy to get it for them. We left as we felt very unwelcome there and ended up having excellent service down the street at Lukin's.

There were a few regular tables along the perimeter among the high top tables but I chose to sit at the bar. The other patrons were very friendly and included me in their conversation. The beer was crisp and cold. The food came out rather quickly. The nachos were topped with beer cheese, fresh pico de gallo, sour cream, and scallions. There was a very generous amount of sour cream so I didn't have to worry about just eating chips. The bartender kept everyone served and knew what the regulars drank. She checked on me regularly. My only disappointment is that as summer comes to an end I will have to wait until next year to attend the events they have at the brewery.
