Our experience with this company--particularly with the assigned project manager--was deeply upsetting and unacceptable from start to finish. The project manager Brandon Mazzacco, was consistently unprofessional, failed to communicate clearly, and generally did not appear to know what he was doing. He provided an inaccurate timeline at the outset and failed to consult with the work crews responsible for carrying out the job to ensure it was feasible. As a result, the timeline was extended at the very last minute--not once, but three separate times--which left our family displaced from our home for three times longer than we were originally told. The quality of the work performed was equally unacceptable. Much of the work was done poorly, and in several instances, it was completely incorrect. We repeatedly raised these concerns with the project manager, who failed to address them adequately. As a result, areas of our home were damaged--damage that could have and should have been avoided had the work been done with care, competence, respect and proper oversight. What is most disturbing, however, is the growing belief my wife and I share that this mistreatment and negligence were not just about incompetence, but deliberate. As a mixed-race gay couple, we could not help but notice the dismissive tone, condescension, and blatant lack of respect we received throughout the process. We cannot ignore the pattern of disregard and the persistent failure to correct mistakes that, in our view, went beyond negligence and bordered on discriminatory behavior. We expected a professional experience. What we received instead was disrespect, broken promises, poor workmanship, damage to our home, and a lingering sense that we were never treated as equal or worthy clients. No family should have to experience this--especially in their own home. read more

What they promised would take 2 months took 6 and that was because they installed laminate floors incorrectly, tiled with spacers still in grout. All had to be taken out reordered and redone correctly. It still looks not correct but I wanted them out of my house! read more

I had a kitchen fire in my new home. The smoke traveled through the whole house, and we had to move out for months for restoration. It was a disruptive, unfamiliar and upsetting day to day process, for months to get my home cleaned, restored and beautiful again. Luckily for me my insurance company appointed a team to restore my house, called F. Lax Construction lead by Allen Jawad. They came in so professionally, with great expertise and really exceeded my expectations with a beautiful end product. They facilitated permits, inspections, sub-contractors, and provided highly skilled and talented in house trades. They also worked side by side with the cabinet shop of my choice to build me an upscale gourmet kitchen. Allen Jawad's other company X-cel Restoration, worked simultaneously with F. Lax Construction to clean restore, replace, and dispose of my personal property. They also handled the total loss inventory and listed thousands of items in an organized manner so that I could price things to get myself reimbursed. They brought my personal items back to my home upon completion of repairs in an organized and systematic manner. This was an overwhelming experience, made bearable by Allen and his staff's expertise and professionalism. They provided me with a beautiful end product. I would highly recommend F. I am very pleased with the window replacement project at the home of my mom. All staff went out of their way to make sure my mom was not stressed during the project. Contractor-recommended change in the middle of the demolition resulted in a very nicely finished project at no additional cost. Follow up work that was not related to the window replacement, which was delayed due to our busy schedules, was completed to our satisfaction. This is the second time I have used this company for repair and/or insurance related work. Both projects were well coordinated, completed on time, completed to my satisfaction, and on budget. I had the pleasure of dealing with this company before closing on a house in early December 2014. Right before closing the pipes burst and flooded the whole house causing extensive damage. The seller made the mistake of hiring this company to do the restoration. They didn't even start demo work till after the new year, nearly a month after they were selected to do the job. Since I had to communicate with them through the seller it's hard to tell exactly what was going on, but I fully believe the contractor was actively lying to the seller and those lies were forwarded on to me. The original estimate was 30 days of work, we didn't close till mid-April. When we finally did close, we discovered that the work was not even finished. They hadn't finished repairing the water heater, and they failed inspection due to switching hot/cold on the faucet. Neither were serious issues, but they also were not disclosed to me at closing which was infuriating.and fraudulent. They took several days after closing to correct the issues as well. Once we were in most of the work done wasn't too bad of quality, but one of the counter tops in the kitchen was damaged by the contractor or one of his subs and then left. After the nightmare I had to deal with with this contractor I would seriously suggest shopping somewhere else. read more

Find another company. I would give zero stars if possible. We waited four months for quote for bathroom remodel for handicapped accessability. In the meanwhile, my mother in law fell four times in her bathroom; thank goodness with no serious injuries. F Lax kept making excuses and telling us we'd have the quote in "two weeks." Four months went by and we finally called Great Lakes Restore at 800.354.7545. Reliable and great quality. 3 weeks to start job after quote. Although I can write a book on my experiences with this company, I will keep it short for the benefit of others. If you want to see the full complaint, go to BBB website and look up this company. I mistakenly contracted this company to work on my basement for some renovations after water damage. My insurance company paid for the work. The quality of the work is absolutely horrendous. I am not joking when I say this but I sincerely feel that small children can do a better job than this company. I don't know where they hire the workers but prior experience doesn't seem to be necessary. Everything that this company worked on is sloppy. Roller marks on paint, crooked drywall lines, moulding crooked, crappy mud job on drywall, no corner bead used on drywall when it should have, carpet not trimmed properly, etc. I do not see one thing that they did professionally. Also, they billed for work that they did not even do. They even charged for new materials when in fact they did not buy anything new and just re-used the existing materials. They took way too long to do the work. Any other company would have finished in a few weeks. This company took over 4 months! The prices were also outrageous. I'd give negative stars if I could. Was required through an FHA mortgage to have a few small things done to the house to pass for closing. On that list was a section of 8 foot railing to be installed, 2 closet doors to be installed, a 1 square foot section of drywall to be patched, and a water leak fixed on my back door. Seems simple enough. Wrong. The price we were quoted was $1,423. For what?! And we weren't at a point where we could shop around because we needed to close on the house in a week and a half. This was the beginning of December 2012 and they knew that. They knew that the bank was paying the bill up front and that we had to pay it back at closing. They told us the work would be done in a week. No such luck. The weeks went by and nothing. Then on Christmas Eve we decided to drive by and look at the house and guess who was finally there. A full week after our actual closing date. The hell with it I thought. At least try are FINALLY there. So now we are out the 1400 and another month of rent because we obviously couldn't close on the original date. Oh well. At least the work is done.... Wrong. The railing is there. But with how shoddy it was put in it has very large gaps in the metal that I alone have cut my hands on at least 4 times.i also researched pricing on this railing and 8 foot sections of it are for sale at Home Depot for $17. The closet doors are up ( honestly can't complain about those) the drywall patch is god awful. And the big thing, the water leaking in the back door. The door was cased in. And the most horrendous ugly sloppy caulk job around most of the siding around my door. I seriously look at it and imagine my dog doing a better job. The water still leaks in. Of course it does. I called the company to come out and look at it seeming as they did have to sign off on documents to the state and the bank saying that there wasn't a water problem with the door. They send a guy out and he looks around and says, that's too much roof for that small of a gutter! Ding ding ding! I'm sooo glad you figured that out now instead of when it was actually your job to fix it. Especially for $1,423!!!!!!!! What is the company doing about it? Absolutely nothing. Absolutely. Nothing. With over $3,000 in legal fee's and climbing up to be expected around $6,000 or more. With their phone call's on speaker phone harassing us, we wish we would have done our homework on this company. This company has been nothing but a nightmare that wont end. Unless you have large amount of funds to fight this company good luck with them. They have harassed us, threatened our family, destroyed our driveway, put a kitchen that was a mid grade basic builder in our home full of defects and substandard and told us to be happy with it and it was new. Compared to our Mid grade custom kitchen that was in our home before our fire and took the lowest and first bid from the insurance company, lowering our home's value. They started to gut our upstairs and came back after it was done telling us they would just seal off our upstairs making our 4 bedroom home now a 1 bedroom. When in our home they used a chemical that was not approved and caused our son who has lung disease to have a medical emergency. Our floors have yet to be addressed next to the dishwasher. The packing company who was responsible for taking our items brought a few items that were not ours and others didn't come back. I was required by the City of Detroit to perform some Lead Abatement on the outside windows and door trim of my four-unit apartment building. I contracted F. Lax Construction to perform this service for $14,000.00. They said they would follow all EPA guidelines with regard to containment practices, clean-up, and would scrape, prime, paint (using the matching color), and caulk. Neither myself or my tenants ever saw caution tape or tarping performed (until the last day when they came back after I complained about the terrible job they did). Scraping was minimal and poorly done, NO priming occurred (when I made this statement the contractor claimed they tinted the primer to match the paint-which is why the primer was not in evidence - right) on the one day when I was required to be there for them to gain access to certain areas, I watched as the painter just one coated with paint over several filthy window sills. They painted shut every window in the building and I had to ask them to prize them all loose. The paint was flat white, not semi-gloss, neo-colonial, white as required by my historic district. And no caulking was performed, until again I had to complain and the contractor didn't believe me that they were supposed to until I showed him the e-mail from the salesman saying they would. When they did do the caulking it was minimal and performed only on areas on the ground floor, until I complained and pointed out specific areas. I had hoped they would caulk around every area, but they didn't. There were two interior doors identified in the report to be painted and I had to show thjem in the report in order for them to attend to them. Basically it appears as if I received a $7,000 job for $14,000. My usual contractor, who is not lead abatement certified, as well as several other individuals who I know that own property all think I was way overcharged and that the company did a terrible job! read more
