I want to recognize the sales manager, Chad, for being straightforward and honoring the trade-in value we had agreed upon before arriving. We drove over an hour to the dealership, so it was important to know that the numbers wouldn't suddenly change when we got there. Chad honored the agreed-upon value, and I genuinely appreciated that transparency.
Nick, our sales representative, also deserves recognition. He made the buying process smooth and pleasant, and working with him was a positive experience. We did encounter a small hiccup when the dealership's systems went down, but the issue was resolved within about an hour. Although it delayed the process, we understood that technical issues happen.
Unfortunately, there were two significant issues that took away from what should have been a great purchase.
First, shortly after purchasing the truck, we discovered that the interior rear passenger door handle was broken. The handle would move but wouldn't open the door, despite the vehicle having passed the dealership's inspection. Fortunately, I was able to get it repaired under Toyota's factory warranty, so I didn't have to pay out of pocket. However, discovering a problem like this so soon after purchasing a vehicle that had supposedly been inspected was disappointing and raised concerns about the thoroughness of that inspection.
The bigger issue, however, was with Chris, the finance manager, and the extended warranty we purchased.
Chris discussed and sold us what we understood to be Ford Protect PremiumCARE coverage. After getting home and carefully reviewing the paperwork, I discovered that the contract listed ExtraCARE instead, a lower level of coverage that covers significantly fewer components than the PremiumCARE plan we had discussed.
We contacted Chris to address the discrepancy, and he told my husband he would fix it and that there was no problem. Based on that conversation, we expected the paperwork to be corrected to reflect the coverage we had agreed to purchase. Instead, we heard nothing from him for several days, and we had to follow up ourselves.
When I finally called back, Chris acknowledged that it was his mistake and that he had selected the wrong coverage. However, he then told me that if we wanted PremiumCARE, we would have to pay more.
That was extremely frustrating. We had already purchased the warranty based on our understanding of what was being sold to us. To discover that we had received a lower level of coverage, be told the mistake would be corrected, receive no follow-up for days, and then be asked to pay more for the coverage we originally discussed felt deceptive. The lack of communication and accountability made the situation even worse. Ultimately, I canceled the warranty because I no longer felt comfortable proceeding with the transaction.
It's unfortunate because Chad and Nick made the vehicle purchase itself a positive experience, and I want to give credit where it's due. However, the broken door handle and, especially, the way the warranty discrepancy was handled significantly undermined my confidence in the dealership.
Buying a vehicle is a major financial decision, and customers should be able to trust that the products being explained and sold to them match the contracts they receive. I appreciate the professionalism shown by Chad and Nick, but the experience with Chris left a lasting negative impression. I hope Jim Burke Ford takes this feedback seriously and improves its inspection process, communication, and transparency in the finance department.
