Eyelab IPL treatment - exceeded my expectations! Highly recommended procedure! Early September 2024 after my routine eye exam and contact lens fitting, Dr Sherman Tung suggested that I consider the IPL dry eye treatments available from the team at Eyelab Kerrisdale. Over the past decade, dry eye symptoms including grainy sensations, tired eyelids, circles under the eyes and now bags under the eyes were increasingly concerning. After a follow up initial consultation with the Eyelab IPL team that included assessment, detailed explanation of the procedures over 4 visits spaced 2 weeks apart, and reasonable expectations both my wife and I made the decision that maintaining good eyesight means more than just glasses! Relief from daily/nightly eye drops, un-clogging the oil glands maybe even cosmetic improvements to reversing the dark circles and droopy eyelids had a very strong appeal. The first 1hr visit / treatment wasn't uncomfortable at all. The highly skilled team of technicians and doctors walked me through the entire process and the effects were almost immediate for vision comfort. I drove over 1.5hrs back to our Whistler home that night and that drive alone was a revelation - no more scattered starry oncoming headlights to distract or add to the stress on an otherwise pitch dark mountain highway. Once home, we applied the warm eye compress for 10 minutes before bedtime and surprisingly, that night there was no need for eye drops! Then over the next few days I started to notice the dark circles that had been forming under my eyes disappeared and after subsequent sessions it continues to improve. And the bags that I was seeing under the eyes started to recede and flatten - the skin is still stretched a little, but no more puffiness. The second and third treatments were basically a repeat of the first - a little more intensity but not uncomfortable at all - certainly the results far exceed the few minutes of nominal discomfort. The improvements are incremental and with little added daily effort (heated eye mask before bedtime for 10 minutes) and the results are very, very good. No more dry scratchy eyes, itchy eyes, reluctance to blink, even opening the eyes wider now - the eyes are lubricated naturally as nature intended! I'm looking forward to completing the fourth round of treatment and the annual follow up. This procedure most definitely improves vision and the quality of life. My friend and her family have lived in Van for 30-odd years, and she is my go-to resource for referrals. She highly recommended this eye doctor practice, saying they are terrific. I visited yesterday and, for the most part, I agree with her. They were excellent. Here are some of the many positive features of this practice: -excellent, easy-to-navigate website which clearly goes over their practice's policies, services, location, and more, with links to book an appointment, easy-to-use contact page if you need to ask further questions, etc. -prompt and reliable customer service. I really liked how they responded to my emailed question about scheduling right away - like, within an hour. Nice! -lots of free parking in the area (which is clearly mapped out on their website. I'm not that familiar with Kerrisdale and even I found the free 2-hour parking areas, thanks to their clear maps on their site). -I have not experienced any business or even any medical specialist who takes as many COVID precautions as this practice, and I really appreciated it! Especially now, when masks aren't mandated anywhere, this office requires them. And they sanitize your hands upon entry, and they limit customers in their office, and seats are reserved, and more. The place was immaculate and it's clear they take COVID seriously. WTG, Eye Lab! -They have state-of-the-art machines, and all the bells and whistles here. And they have an in-house eye glass department, too. -I really appreciated how they do direct billing with your supplemental insurance companies. Not a lot of places do that and it can be a hassle to pay upfront and then remit all the forms and wait for reimbursement. This place eliminates all that hassle for you. Nice! I have friends who are mobility-challenged, so I feel compelled to note that this practice is accessible only by walking up a flight of stairs. (They mention this on their website). FYI. My only gripe, and why I'm giving this practice 4 stars instead of 5, pertains to a pet-peeve of mine: I take issue with people I'm working with - especially medical people who get intimately into my personal space - who don't introduce themselves. Don't get me wrong, the staff here were all nice and professional in every other way, but the guy who initially greeted me and sanitized my hands and escorted me to the exam machines and did my initial eye exams...he never introduced himself. And the doctor who got me from the waiting area and escorted me to the private exam room never introduced herself, either. After a few minutes, I flat-out asked her, "are you the doctor?". When she replied in the affirmative, I said "Hi, nice to meet you!". It's just a little thing but without an introduction, the relationship seems so impersonal and one-sided. They know my name, I think it only right we should know theirs. (I used to be a paramedic, and after I worked in a doctor's office for a year, and then in a hospital for a few years, and we ALWAYS introduced ourselves right away. Puts people at ease). I had a major traumatic brain injury in 2014. I have had difficulty with reading literature ever since then. My eyes would skip words and lines when they got tired which was usually around 5-10 minutes. I have been devastated by the loss of reading as it was a big part of enjoying life. I went to check in on the health of my eyes and it was then that Dr. Sherman Tung suggested that I consider vision therapy. I am now 6 sessions in with Dr. Melody Tong and am wondering why I didn't start earlier! It has been eye-opening to learn more about the different functions of how an eye works and correlates with the brain. I am very happy with the service as they communicate reminders with me the way that works for me. I know the clinic shut down for several weeks due to COVID-19 but even then, the staff has continued to check on my progress and my rehab. I have just started vision therapy again and they have implemented many safety measures for clients and staff. It's been awhile since my last checkup with Dr. Sherman Tung and it was so good to see him and his new clinic space. He's always been attentive, detail oriented in his process and passionate about his work. With covid, him and his staff exercised every precaution possible to make me feel safe throughout my whole appointment. They were constantly sanitzing the equipment used. I was so impressed and pleased with my visit to Eye Lab. My partner recommended them, as she's been going there for years, but I had my first visit today. I really loved that I could do all of the booking via email -- I found the office staff to be really prompt and clear via email about what I would need for my visit (forms, etc) and how much it would all cost. My optometrist changed locations and Dr. Tung is now at Eye Lab. As most people are already aware, Dr. Tung is by far the best optometrist in the lower mainland and I made sure to follow him where he went. As mentioned in my previous review, Dr. Tung always listened intently to my concerns and he even explained all my questions with answers that I could understand, unlike some other optometrists. Also, the staff are friendly and very helpful and offer great advice when choosing frames. The frame selections are very nice as they carry a bunch of designer brands, which by the way, don't cost an arm and a leg. They also do contact orders by phone/email and Gene who manages that is super helpful and friendly. I'll definitely be coming back to do regular check-ups and I highly recommend Eye Lab. I was nervous at the thought of taking my son to a clinic, but he needed his eyes evaluated and we took the leap and I was wow'd from the jump!
