I absolutely love this office staff and each experience my 'Ohana and I have had with them! I am sad we will be leaving a place such as this! The care here is real and personal! I love the lobby such a beautiful way to bring nature inside to keep a custom personal touch while dividing the open space but keeping it open and the flow of patient care and the process of seeing the doctor and getting your glasses fitted is perfect! Buyer Beware!! I would give no stars if possible. After 3 tries to get my glasses to where I CAN SEE, I have given up. They don't seem to care or understand that the progressive area only allows a tiny spot of clarity, the sides are blurry. I even had another eye exam to be sure my rx was correct. I cannot use them for reading or computer work at all. They have a no refund policy so I'm stuck with them As my insurance will only pay for glasses every 3 years. I had better luck online with Zenni (and way faster than this clown show) And have 3 pairs now & still have not equaled the over inflated fee I paid them. read more

I brought my broken frames and was told my insurance company provides once a year for broken lenses broken frames whatever needs to be replaced great then I was told my prescription is no good when it clearly said on there that it was good for two years. I had to go back to my doctor and have it prescription rewritten. I was told initially it could take up to three weeks to make my glasses. At 3 1/2 weeks I decided to stop by and ask where my glasses were. The woman behind the counter said they're ready right now she went to go in the back and get them for me. Everything's great I walk out to my car I get in my driver seat. The left lens falls out of my glasses. Bottom line don't waste your time here. They also quoted me approximately $250 for a pair of sunglasses the same thing Walmart so they can make for me for approximately $110.00 While I was in the store, I could not help over here. Another customer said there's something wrong with my glasses they're too tight. She asked if she could have the lenses put in a different frame or did you need a different frame? The person behind the counter says yes, you should buy another frame a more expensive one. That way you won't have this problem. The only thing island Hawaii wants is money they do not care about your eyes. They do not care about your glasses. They prove that to me over the last three years, never going back there again . read more

Every time that I have visited in the past, I was there for at least 2 hours just for an eye exam. I promise, you'll spend the majority of your visit here just waiting to be served. On top of this, the lady that sits right up front (I believe her name is Kamreyn) is so rude! They'll ask you if you'd like to buy your contacts through them. If you refuse, (I usually say "no ty, I get them cheaper using walmart.com") she'll roll her eyes and huff and puff every time! The first time, I did order through them and they were going to charge me for shipping and I said, "nevermind, I'll just order through walmart with free shipping" and she got so mad and then with an attitude told the receptionist to "Just take shipping off!" like I was a bother but she still needed my money. Whoa. After her unprofessionalism, I refused to get my contacts through them ever again. Last week however, they lost me as a customer for good. They texted me to confirm my appointment (10 days ahead of my appointment, mind you) and I confirmed within 45 min. I then I received a text saying that I lost my appt since I didn't confirm. Huh? But tbh, I was actually relieved!! To me, they seem to be more interested in filling up time slots to make as much money as possible rather than providing quality service to their customers. I can spend my money elsewhere, where they'll actually appreciate my business and give better service and treatment. Luckily, Big Island Vision Center was kind enough to fit me in last minute. Super unprofessional, they will add warranties onto their overpriced frames without telling you. Make sure to check your invoices to avoid being fraudulently charged. Also, the workers seem to show favorites with the customers, treating some like VIPs and others like irritants. Go anywhere else, your money will go twice as far. This is the absolute worst eye doctor I have ever been to in my life. First of all, the doctor completely messed up my prescription. I could not see at all with the script she came up with. I had to beg her to just refill my previous contact prescription and not change a thing just so I could guarantee vision this year. On top of that, this ghetto business has a contact lens gimmick I couldn't believe. I was told every contact lens appointment costs $110 right off the bat. Their justification for this is that they are giving you a free trial pair when you leave. I have had contacts for decades and I have never been charged for a trial pair before! On top of it, I could not believe I got another bill in the mail for more charges afterwards. They charged me and my insurance for visit fees that came in the mail and It turns out that $110 actually turned in to $200 and I still hadn't even gotten my contacts. (Also, please note I have amazing insurance coverage.) Two months later, I started getting threatening emails from Eye Care Hawaii telling me I would lose my prescription. I was told my contact lens quote was going to expire within a week if I didn't order contacts through them immediately. That didn't make sense to me at all because these prescriptions last for a year. Glasses and contact lens prescriptions last a year and you should be able to get them filled anywhere you like. Their emails made it seem like if I didn't order my contacts through them, immediately, then I was going to lose my $200 investment and be without the ability to order elsewhere. This is just completely wrong. This business is ripping off the good people of Hilo! I don't know how they can sleep at night. I'm totally disgusted! read more

I walked in for an eyeglass adjustment, saw the optician and signed a waiver for the FREE adjustment. Paris, the optician, worked my crooked eyeglasses back into straight - - in less than five minutes-- and saved me a lot of $$ by not having to buy new Eyewear. Mahalo for the great service. I waited an hour for service. Had to alert the staff twice even with 2 employees sitting 10 feet away. I have good insurance. The staff told me so and offered me progressive lenses. I accepted and paid $100. over my insurance coverage. Two weeks later I get bifocals instead of progressive, staff gives me excuses and now I'm on my third trip to the store-on public transportation!! I'm 68 and walk with a cane! They seem to have advanced exam equipment but their staff isn't worth their technolog. read more

My experience was pretty good unlike many of the other reviews. Staff was polite. I will say that we waited quite a while, and I was there for my kids check-up. The staff did periodically check-in with me and was very open with what was happing. We lived, no big deal, but it should be noted that we were on a cancelation list which is how we got in there. Somehow they said this took a while since it was considered a "walk-in" which didn't really make sense. I imagine the cancelation list is tied to scheduled appointment and you're just changing the name tied to the one on the calendar. We lived, thanks to Youtube. Other than that, things were perfectly fine. However, I will say this, my biggest eye roll is that they didn't accept ANY private vision insurance for a standard exam/vision test. That's pretty silly. Their focus was on those who could provide a supported health insurance plan which I suspect they could try to bill for bigger claims. I've never actually used my health insurance for a standard eye exam when trying to see an optometrist. Standard optometry related visits include testing the health of your eyes, which is covered by vision insurance. The only time I've used that type of plan was to see an ophthalmologist for a medical related eye issue. The exam my daughters health plan was billed for, was no different that a standard optometry appointment. I definitely think the office has worked on fixing things based on the reviews. I could see they were definitely trying. Again, my main vice was the plans they refused to support read more

Optical department reps Alika and Jenny were rude to a local family while I was awaiting my optical exam. The local family were visibly upset due to the lack of customer service. Few minutes later, a Caucasian family visited the optical department and were given the royal treatment and joking & laughing amongst themselves like family. Thats the problem having a waiting room that overlooks / integrated into the whole business. Nice acoustics though... can hear every conversation while waiting, no matter how petty or trivial... They should treat every customer how they wanted to be treated as a customer at a business... as equals. read more

I had the most painful experience in Hawaii, I had torn corneas in both eyes at night. Opening my eyes hurt! Closing my eyes even hurt! I was scared but knew I would have to see an eye specialist. I called for an emergency appt early in the morning. They were so kind over the phone and took me on the same day. I saw Dr. Kawamoto and he was very patient and upbeat. He helped with the pain, calmed me down, and reassured me that my vision wasn't permanently gone. I would highly recommend Dr. Kawamoto! read more

I was visiting the Big Island, and my eyeglasses had an accident and were horribly bent (luckily the lenses were undamaged). I struggled to get them back into shape, without success. Took them to Eye Care Hawaii (no appointment). No waiting, spoke with Kaylynn immediately. She wasn't sure they could be fixed, but offered to try. I'm happy with the doctor. But wasn't happy with the service from the optician. I wasn't happy with a frame that was chosen. I ask for it to be changed. I don't believe that they did everything they could to have the lab change it. Now I'm stuck with a eyeglasses that I'm not happy or comfortable with it. Optician said it could be changed but when called to be picked up I was told they couldn't. I called to follow up since they couldn't follow up with me the day I made the change. I was told they could change it and now the day of pickup they said it couldn't be done. So unhappy! read more

Beware! This practice will try to get more money out of you at every turn. When I went for my standard eye exam, they asked me if I wanted to do the "Dark Adaptation exam" not mentioning g that it was not covered under my insurance and that it was an additional $196. They charged $360 for a basic eye exam plus $196 for the "Dark adaption exam". I bought glasses from them that are supposed to have anti-reflective and anti-glare coating - they obviously do not and when I called, they insisted that they do. My old glasses have the coating and there's no glare or reflection at night. I can't even drive at night in the rain with these. read more

Still constant calls constant "reminders" im due for an exam. (VERY INFLATED PRICES COMPARED TO MY OTHER DOC) They just bug the living crap out of you. I've LEFT you do I need to draw you a chart? After putting their office number on ignore I get calls from a billing service they use asking me to update my file with a new medical coverage number. Ill be damned if I give them any more information. I have no payments outstanding so WHY do you need my medical coverage information? I had to give at least one star, because it makes u. Service was good, but their financial practices are iffy. They advertise VSP insurance online, which i have. AKA a $25 co pay, right? Wrong, I go and at check out ask me for medical insurance card and do not take VSP. Even after medical insurance, they asked me to pay $225 bucks for an eye exam. No way. They charge medical insurance co for codes they do not do. They did nothing different then a place I go to with VSP. They need to be audited and looked into ASAP. I had to work with the owner and got a refund for a portion. They elected then to bill VSP to see if they could get extra money after my medical insurance paid them out. I got my upfront money refunded to me outside of $50 they decided to keep. Then 6 months later I get a late bill from them, after owner said it was waived. I had to deal with their billing office again. Headache from hell. I told them I will never come back, and still to this day, a year or so later, I get emails from them saying I am overdue for an appointment. Get ur office in order already. read more

I had an appointment last week.. it started off good I checked and did all my paperwork and then was called in by a male assistant he did my exam but throughout the whole process I'm guessing that was his kid who kept coming into the room asking questions to his dad (the male assistant) and was knocking on the door it started to get bothering when he'd leave the room in the middle of a testing and come back then would have to restart it again! I was really appreciative of the help I received from the check in staff and also the eyeglass fitting and ordering staff. They answered several of my questions, even though I came in with no appointment, in a rush, moving islands etc. not ideal to do that, but so nice that they were helpful and accommodating. I got glasses and lenses selected very quickly, and made a decision on my contacts even more quickly due to the helpful answers ( I typically take forever). Previously, during my appointment, the eye exam staff and doctor were extremely thorough. I don't recall ever having such a thorough exam. I'm definitely happy with the staff, their exam equipment , their selection, that they take my insurance, and are helpful. 18 months after my wife was seen there, I got a bill in the mail for electroretinography for $300. According to my insurance company this is an 'investigational or experimental' procedure and they will not pay. Adding insult to injury, Doctor Yang's billing office refuses to use the rate of what the insurer would have been willing to pay if it has been approved. My first visit to Eye Care Hawaii (recommended by VA) was with my husband. I was so impressed by the staff: their friendliness, their caring, their enthusiasm....from beginning to end. Because of the staff, I made an appointment for me. Second visit same as the first: friendly, caring, enthusiastic. Third visit was a fitting for new glasses. The manager was Kanani (I hope that's correct). She was energetic, friendly, etc. Fourth visit, same as others. In fact, I asked the technician if they take customer service classes. I was a patient here for years, and refused to see anyone else. I got an opportunity to work in the mainland for two years, and when I came back to town, Eye Care Hawaii refused me as a patient. They immediately lost my respect as medical professionals. You don't refuse someone for any reason, especially if they had been a patient there for years. Doctors are supposed to help and not turn people away. You are better off going to someone else who is as committed to their patients as their patients are to them. read more

First the pleasant review. I have seen both Dr. Miyashiro (since Walmart days) and now Dr. Yang. Both are excellent optometrists. Now for the unpleasant review. As noted above I have been a patient of Dr Miyashiro since his office was located in Walmart (he has since moved from Walmart location). I am an extremely patient person, but enough is enough!!! Over all these years, each and every time I have had an appointment, I have had to wait for over a half-hour to one hour or longer before being seen by the doctor. Why make an appointment if you can keep the appointment time? Is it that their time is valuable, but their patients time is not? How disrespectful is that? I have always been 5 - 10 minutes or longer earlier than my scheduled appointment. I know doctors are busy; however, my personal physician has never made me wait more than 15 minutes. My chiropractor, massage therapists, attorney, etc. have never kept me waiting. I am a general manager of a company. If this were my business, it seems to me that either 1) staff needs to be re-trained (so don't overbook or overlap patient appointments, or 2) staff needs to be terminated for lack of professionalism, inefficiency or lack of productivity. Maybe that is the problem that needs to be addressed or is currently being addressed since I seem to see a high turn-over rate. I'm still debating whether or not to switch doctors as I feel confident and comfortable with Dr. Miyashiro and Dr. Yang. If delays were once in a while I could accept that, but it has been almost every time and I'm lucky if I see them 3 timers per year. read more
