This is my ultimate favorite park since I was little. Love everything this park has to offer. This…read moreyear, they renovated to make it more spacious with even more benches, just in time for the summer time vibes. During the summer evenings, we loved coming here to watch the sunset over the water. Huge lawn area where you can park your picnic blanket and throw a football or kick a soccer ball around. You can always get a handball court and you know those are hard to come by in nyc parks. Their 5 basketball court is alwaysssss busyyyyyyyyyyyyy. But ordinarily, it's welcoming. I meet people who tend to frequent this park from other neighborhoods. During the summer, friends of Francis Lewis do an awesome job setting up events like a summer concert etc. all year around as a matter of fact. They be hosting Halloween parties, block parties etc. This group is friendly, dedicated and awesome! They're always committed to gardening and cleaning the park. Very friendly group. Parking can be a bit of a pain, but if you're willing to walk, parking by the Whitestone expwy would be the way to go. Last but not least, I love watching the bocce players. They play a serious game. Not many parks have bocce, like spaghetti park, so this a gem.

We literally just stumbled upon this as we did not expect this amusement "village" to be open. It's…read moresmall, but good for an hour's fun for little ones. Their website says they're open Friday to Sunday, and there's no update on their Facebook page, but they are open! The carousel is the main draw obviously. When we went (early May 2021) there were a few other rides open, but not all. There was no line at all for any of the rides, and the staff were mostly nice. We were told to keep our masks on at all times, and there was hand sanitizer everywhere.

While I wouldn't consider the Carousel at Forest Park to be a hidden gem, it most definitely is an…read moreNYC landmark that doesn't get enough recognition. It has been deemed a historic national site, as the initial carousel was built in 1903, only to be rebuilt in 1966 after a fire. It now sits in Woodhaven, Queens, restored to its former glory and awaiting children from all the borough and beyond. One wouldn't think the NY Carousel would be an underrated family activity given its history, but too many folks are unaware that it exists even now. The city has taken great steps to ensure its longevity and anyone looking for kid friendly activity or a little nostalgia has come to the right place. While it is a short ride in the natural beauty of the park, the surrounding space makes it an ideal getaway for families who want to book the space for gatherings of whatever kind. The Carousel itself is the main attraction of course, though there are other rides for kids that range from a train ride to a recently added mini ferris wheel dubbed the "Woodhaven Wheel." Ticket costs for the rides vary, but the last time I checked it was $35 for a 10-pack (i.e. $3.50 a ticket). While there are some small carnival games and story telling sessions, this is not a substitute for any major carnival / amusement park on a bigger scale in any way. Think of this as a place to kill a couple of hours with the young ones. I'd recommend bringing food in and avoiding their options (think hot dogs, small packs of chips, etc.) if at all possible. They've closed this section of the park for the rest of 2020, but I sense that in 2021 that they'll take great measures to ensure everything is safe for youngins / carefree adults to partake.
