From good to bad. I started working through Extras Only here in Portland, Oregon quite a few years ago. I worked Leverage, GRIMM, Portlandia, The Librarians, as well as movies and commercials. Up until all the television productions ended in Portland, all was good and I got regular work. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. I've only gotten a single shoot for a local commercial in the last couple years. The shoot paid $200 and I received a check from Extras Only for only $85. I've called numerous times to only receive an answering machine message and no return calls. Not a human being in sight. Text messages and emails have also gone unanswered. Needless to say that the minute I can't trust someone to pay the amount agreed upon for work I've done, the trust is gone and I refuse to make that mistake ever again. It takes months to since receive payment. I have sent numerous emails, starting at 45days past the completion of the job (the maximum amount of time their policy states you should receive payment). All of my emails, and voicemails have gone unanswered. All in all I eventually got paid, I wish that someone will respond to messages or inform people that it takes approx 10weeks to get paid so that they know what to expect. read more

I really like this company though I have not found anything to compare it with. One time I had an issue with my account and it was a simple phone call and everything was fixed. I find the staff very professional and well organized because of how fast they can answer my question if needed. I have gotten many job opportunities to have the chance to work with different companies requiring people. I must say, I was hesitant but excited to sign up. I first joined under the free account because I wanted to work on the set of Grimm. It was quick and easy to get a pic up of myself and select my talent options. I was able to write up a few details about myself in my own words too and hit submit. I was live and active immediately! It wasn't long before I was being looked at for an extra and as a stand in. I got hired for an extras part on Grimm - they even used my vehicle! It was such a fun day! I got to meet great people, was fed a fabulous lunch and got paid for my time. The cast was professional, kind and welcoming. I absolutely LOVED it and would love to do it again soon! A great experience overall!! My only concern was with email response. Extrasonly are truly busy people. They are working hard to get us jobs! I didn't receive a follow up response when I sent an email or two. I know it's me just trying to learn the ropes at this point and I had questions. They likely didn't respond, because I asked a question i already had the answer to. So, I didn't push any further and just went with the flow. It would have been nice to get a reply, but I'm sure they had their reasons. It all worked out in the end. I had fun being a part of the Grimm cast - they are amazing people! After my day on set, I was so happy I paid for a full account with Extrasonly! I added more pics, updated my extras work experience and am now just hopeful to get selected again. I saw an ad for extras on tv New when Grimm was filming. 2 weeks after I signed up I got hired for Grimm not once but twice. So exciting and then was cast for the Librarian. And also 2 commercials. However those are very far between sadly. I am a stay at home wife and getting the notice you got the job is the best feeling. People ask how I get to do this work and I tell them how easy it is to sign up. This is not the place to go if you want to deal with an honest company. I signed up with the 20 day trial and after about half of that I decided that their company was so disorganized and unprofessional, that I deactivated my account, about 10 days prior to my 20 days being up. Well, then the next day after deactivating I get a note from them that they tried to run my card but it didn't go through. Why would they run my card if I deactivated before the date? I have tried to call their office before and email them, with no response. The way they do their business makes you wonder if there really is a place called Extras Only. I would run the other way if I were you. I don't do business the way they do and I think they are a scam. Don't go there!!! read more

Waste of time. Paid for their highest level of service and was cast in Grim as an extra (just paying me enough to barely break even in the yearly membership) then went on to accept and make myself available for 4+ jobs, each time rescheduling friends , family and other work and then each time the day before casting was passed up without explanation. It seems that if you are a normal-decent looking 40 something male this may not be a good place to hope to be cast as an extra because I wasted an enormous amount of time that could have been well spent all the while hoping for something that turns out to look like quite a scam. My advice, find a decent agent. read more

I had a great time working two different days in downtown Portland last year but what's going on now with the website and business? I tried calling and got the words USER BUSY on my cell. Poor Communication !!! I signed up with their service, and 3 times I received text notifications seeing if I was available for the show Grimm. I said yes, but was then dissed at the last minute. The first one I submitted for, I heard nothing back, so I called their office the day before I thought I was to report to the set and got a snotty response, basically saying that if they didn't contact me then obviously they had found someone else for the role. Nice of them to let me know ahead of time! I was dumb enough to let them do this to me 2 more times, each time sending me a text at the very last minute saying that they had found someone else, despite the fact that I had committed myself weeks in advance and was told that if I backed out at the last minute they would discontinue my membership. I think it is absolutely unacceptable that they are not obligated to follow the rules that they set for other people. Making someone keep their schedule open (and turning down other opportunities) but then cancelling on them at the last minute is deplorable! If it had happened one time due to unforeseen circumstances, that would one thing, but to do this on a regular basis is cruel and unethical. I have never been treated so badly by a background casting agency in my entire life. I hope some other agencies who have humane respect for back ground actors will take over and drive this company out of business, because they are jerks! Not only do they treat people badly, but they charge you a fee to be an extra which is supposed to be illegal, but they somehow get around it. read more

Plus Grimm stopped using extras only their last season and I believe Librarians also. I got on Grimm their last season because of a posting online and couldn't make the casting call for Librarians. Extras Only is one of Portland's exquisite hidden gems. This is a great business with fun opportunities that every Portland denizen should explore! If you've ever wanted to be on television or in the movies, here's your chance! Extras Only provides background casting for anything from Music Videos, to Infomercials, to Print Ads, to big Hollywood feature films, and more! And they employ regular, everyday people! Membership is about $5 to $8 a month depending on the type of membership you purchase (Basic or Premium) -- but it's "billed annually" so it'll cost you around $100 when you first sign up. However! This membership is well worth it, since you can make about that much from just one job. In my opinion, the membership pays for itself! Plus, people are cast in things based on their own availability. I signed up while I was in college and spent a few days during my Spring Break wandering in in the background of a movie set. Fun fun! Extras Only was responsible for the extras and background actors for several movies filmed here in Portland including The Ring, Paranoid Park, and most recently (as of posting this review) the movie "Twilight" (2008). The filming of "Twilight" is actually how I discovered Extras Only. Being a fan of the books, I unearthed Extras Only while doing a little research on plans for the film (mostly because I wanted to visit to the set... hah!). The chance to be an EXTRA in the movie was even more appealing than what I'd had in mind (i.e. driving all the way out to Kalama so I could stand on a sidewalk in the rain and watch blurry figures from 300 meters away through a chain-linked fence) . And they actually PAID ME to do something I would've fought tooth and nail to *volunteer* for. THAT was certainly a lovely surprise. Needless to say, Extras Only has been nothing but wonderful in my eyes. The only issue I had with the company at all was during the sign-up process. The website is confusing and doesn't give you very much information on (A) the cost of membership, (B) how to be considered for jobs, (C) how to tell you've been considered for a part, or (D) what the terms of phrases they use on their website mean. The website doesn't have a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) page which I thought was a bit strange (and confusing when I first started out). In addition to this, the rules and guidelines are very strict when you upload your Profile Photograph (they have to be, but that doesn't mean it isn't frustrating at times), but you're always welcome to have your picture taken at the Extras Only office for free during their business hours. There is a phone number you can call for help as well when you have questions about anything! The people are very friendly, supportive, and helpful. All in all, this business gets 4.8 stars from me (it got a 0.5 deduction for its somewhat uninformative website, but a 0.3 bonus for having helpful people that you can call to answer questions). And I rounded up to 5 Stars since I've yet to hear of anyone having a bad experience with this company that was directly related to the company itself (and not the nature of the industry with its tight schedules, secretive tendencies regarding set location, etc.). A Final Note: I can only speak from the point of view of a person hired as an Extra, so the business aspect of this company that involves hiring Extras Only to find background talent for projects is not included in this review. Though if it's any consolation to those that hire Extras Only for their projects: This company treats their extras very professionally, respectfully, and requires every one of their members to complete an informative tutorial process that informs them of set etiquette and very stringent rules before they are even considered for casting. It was a great experience to work with them, and I would do it again in a heartbeat. read more

Had my 6th grader on Extras Only for 6 months. Let's see. Three outfits for jobs only, and nice shoes - $110. 6 months of no work = $150. So our entire Extras only experience lost us $260 for nothing but some expensive new school clothes. The worst part? A hugely disappointed kid who was so excited to sign up and asked me to check my phone nearly every day. Going to try other routes. Waste of money. read more

It's obvious they have their favorites. I worked for Grimm on one episode. It was my first time to work on a set and then Leverage twice. They would ask me for availability for work for Grimm and I would always respond "yes" no matter what I was doing because I'd heard they won't get back with you if you reply "no" and gave your reason. Well, I had surgery coming up and they asked availability. I replied that I couldn't because of surgery listing name of hospital and doctor for verification. I've not heard from them since. They also tell you that if you only want to be on Grimm that you can sign up w/o paying a fee. I've attempted to do this and have yet to hear from them. I sent them an email to let them know I'm available again and dead silence on their part. Makes me wonder if being an extra is really worth the trouble and effort, especially for the minimum wage pay. Also, when I'd respond that I was available, I'd always get a text that they'd hired someone else for the job. So, canceling plans for them was always a waste of time. Always happy to help but when I feel as though I'm being taken advantage of, and I don't care what company or organization it's for, then I find other things to do where I can know my time and effort is appreciated and counted! read more

Having been with extras only for over three years I have lot's to tell. My first year I was going to school so most of the time I had to turn down work. during that year I was up for consideration for three to four jobs. Being up for consideration is not the same as getting the job. That's the catch. The pay is very low and the abuse is very high on some of the sets. Especially if Jimmy Mack is working. The unprofessional behavior displayed by him on the set was unbelievable. Yelling at extras screaming in my face accusing me of talking during filming. I find the company to be very badly organized and the employees to be rude and arrogant. I was told that my pictures were never good enough so I went in to the office to have them taken. There you'll find a rude women sitting talking to her friends on the phone.She kept telling me to wait. After an hour of waiting she finally took my picture and told me," that's it". No " thank you " nothing. I left there feeling as if I had wasted my time. I've worked in Hollywood for over 14 years in the movie and television industry and I had never been treated so badly.. I signed up for a free trial for 21 days. I agreed to charge my card for the given membership fee. Then later there was a possibility to upgrade for $25. Then there was a charge of $5 for additional photos. I searched the website to verify costs but could not find any information. There is nothing on "My account" page indicating costs incurred. I did find a link to add additional photos but there was no mention of a $5 charge/photo. Later I found reference to a 14 day free trial???What was there once was not there a second or third time. I received no answers to my inquiries or phone messages leaving me no choice but to cancel. I cannot afford to leave an open ended card withdrawal with no accounting of the charges. read more

I hesitated to sign up due to the mixed reviews here but I asked around and got a good recommendation from a friend of a friend. I signed up online, which didn't take too long, though the "workshop" and questions felt endless. I did pay the fee because my source said he made it back in one job. Well, I signed up one week and got hired for "Grimm" the next. The job was a combination of fascinating and tedious. I loved the camaraderie with the other extras and met some great people. I worked two, 13-hour days, got fed, had fun, and made back the fee and more. I think that if you have clear expectations about what being an extra means, then you'll have a good experience. It's not the way to become a star. The job requires you to follow specific directions, stay in the background, and be of service to the greater story. There's no room for prima donnas so if you have a problem with authority, or in being the lowest of the low in the pecking order, don't bother to be an extra.
