I have nothing but good things to say about Extra Space Storage in Highland Park. They have a variety of storage options at different sizes and price points. I've been a customer for about 8 years and have always found the personnel to be accommodating to my changing needs. I've had the pleasure of working with current manager Kathleen Grant for a while and she goes above and beyond to ensure I get the right space I need. She even informed me that I qualified for a senior discount, which I appreciated. I'll say one more thing. I use another local storage facility for vehicle storage. This storage facility has become a bait and switch place. They talk in circles about how things just changed a week ago regarding pre-paying to manage your rates. Expect significant rate increase (ex. $112 to $181) in one year. They do not stand by their word. I did everything they told me to do to try and keep my rate consistent (ex. pre-paying for a year). I was told that the "IT" department just changed the policy. Typically companies will send out a notice if policies are changing. Even if it is inconvenient go somewhere else. I'm ashamed that the city of Highland Park allows a business with such shady practices to be here. read more

WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! AVOID AT ALL COSTS! I recently called to reserve a storage unit. I was very specific in my request for a unit that had a "large, garage door entrance door". However, upon arriving at the unit - with a van filled with oversize items - I was directed to a unit with a small entrance door! WIth no other available units, I was forced to scramble to find an alternate site. WORSE yet, I have had to place a dozen calls to the manager, Kathleen, and her staff in order to receive a refund - due to their misinformation. Kathleen told me that their system would take a very long time to process a refund and advised me to open a dispute with my credit card company! Not sure what's been going on at this storage facility, but I've been experiencing a ton of inconvenience lately. And, Jason L's right...renting here is a luxury. But, it's three minutes from my house and that's why I don't shop around. First and foremost, at the beginning of the month I don't know what was going on with the entrance, and I appreciated the signage pointing me to the next door, but it was a serious bummer. And, it seems like the problem took longer than expected to get repaired. Note...I got caught in the pouring rain twice trying to juggle back and forth between the two garage entrances, while loading and unloading my car. Glad that's fixed! Next set of issues... The carts are not always being put back near the loading areas, and I have had two instances where it took me a super long time walking the floors to search for them. I am guessing this place is short staffed, because all it would take at the end of the day is someone to do a cart run. It's not that hard...come on. It's a new issue, so I have a feeling they will get it worked out soon. Someone across from me got locked out (kicked out) of their space this month, and their stuff was put in the hallway across from my locker. I'm pretty sure they aren't coming back, so someone should clear it out and donate it. It kind of makes me sad every time I pass by and know they got the boot. Again, this could be resolved by someone walking the halls at the end of the day. There is hope... Though things seem wonky in the building right now, in the past I've had really great luck with renting here. It typically always seems safe, clean, and super organized with carts in the right place. Hope they hire the help they need to justify the higher price of rent. At they very least, please just put the carts back where they belong. Note: I got stuck in the elevator last month due to someone leaving the doors open for too long. We had an amazing experience with Extra Space Storage in Highland Park. Our family had a storage unit with them for many years and recently had to clear it out. We had a complicated situation involving multiple family members needing access, a single weekend massive clean-out, and needing to have movers access the unit after we all flew out of town. Extra Space Storage was extremely accommodating and helpful through the planning stages and for the weekend we were all there cleaning out the storage unit. They had to coordinate with multiple family members and a separate business and were so kind and patient throughout it all. They had packing supplies on-site which was very helpful so we didn't have to spend more time going to find these at other stores. And they were very flexible with reserving a new, smaller unit when we weren't sure what size we would need and we ended up switching units a couple times over the course of the weekend we were cleaning out the unit. I couldn't believe how incredible their customer support was; they were angels to us during a rough and emotional period. Thank you so much, Kathleen and Tom, for all your help! read more

They completely misrepresented a unit, causing us to scramble at the last minute to find a new place, promised a refund, yet failed to process the credit due. Very disappointed in this storage unit pricing. Initial pricing is already high compared to other storage places, but months into rental, prices are raised. The facility is clean and well maintained, but not justified for high rents being raised. I would not complain if prices were raised and matched current pricing the new customers would receive. Let's not price gouge customers who are loyal, just because it's not convenient to move. I have used other storage units in the area, that have been just as clean if not cleaner, and very secure and safe at a much lower price. This is the first time, also in such a short time of a few months of having my storage unit rent raised before. Check other local storage facilities for better pricing. This place is great ! Some friends used this Extra Space location for temporary storage prior to moving from their home, and it gave me the idea of using this to clear out some stuff in my basement that I wasn't using, but didn't want to get rid of (e.g.; family heirlooms; kids' artwork, etc.). Before I signed up, I looked at a couple of other storage places, and I came running back to Extra Space. The other places were dirty, dark, and I noticed a lot of rodent traps. I'm pretty tolerant, but these places were gross. This Extra Space is ALWAYS clean. There have always been carts available, the place is well lit, and I've never had problems getting in or out. I also know that they have a lot of cameras throughout the facility, so I've always felt safe (so has my wife) when going there and in leaving my stuff there. I wind up using this a lot more than I thought I would. It's been the perfect option for dealing with the stuff my kids have to move back and forth from college each year. We just drop the boxes off in June, and pack them back in the car in August. It's also much easier for us to find things in the locker, as opposed to looking "somewhere in the basement" for things we've stored away. The staff is great to work with, and extremely pleasant and flexible in helping out whenever I've asked. I don't know if all of the Extra Space Storage places are this good, but I've been extremely happy with this one. read more

The Highwood Historical Society had to move its entire office, including historical items, artifacts etc. The 10 x 15 space was filled to the brim with our materials. Allie and Jordon from the office were very helpful in registering us. Our only problem was the elevator. Since we had so many heavy and bulky items, it took many many trips on the elevator. It was time consuming to have to key in each time the movers had to go up the elevator. We appreciate it that this is a close location, easy to access, climate controlled and has good security. read more
